Scorsese vs tarantino

The thing about Tarantino fans on this board is that we all love Tarantino and we love his films, but we are generally not under the delusion that he is the greatest director ever. Not that he isn’t a great director. I think he is one of the greats. But Scorsese is a God among directors.

Of course, when it comes to my favourite director of the two, I would say Tarantino. I may not like Scorsese more than Tarantino, but I am still totally aware of the greatness of his films and his impact of the film world.

I find it so strange that people can say(i’m not talking to anyone in particular here) this director is better, but I like this director more. For me the best directors make films I enjoy more than anything else because they are so good.

that’s a pretty wise statement.

It’s not strange. I guess it’s to do with technicalities. For example, somebody might acknowledge that Scorsese’s general direction (camera movement, placement and movement of actors) is superior to that of say the Coen Brothers’ direction, but they still like the Coens more because their films have brilliant dialogue, characters and that they tackle a different genre with every film.

There is a difference between greatest and favourite. Scorsese maybe the greatest director (with his catalogue of films coupled with critical and commercial success), but Tarantino is my favourite because I like his style. He makes films I want to see. Another example - Someone might think The Godfather is the greatest film, but their favourite is Kill Bill. It is highly rewatchable and is a lot of fun.

I enjoy watching porn more than watching The English Patient *. That doesn’t mean the porn director is better.

*(This is just an example. Don’t bombard me with replies like “I never knew you were such a pervert LOL”)

Good point, I’m not saying its true all the time. But the really great directors(in my opinion) make films that I adore because of their cinematic style and stuff but films I enjoy as well.

Well my old friend… to each his own.

I have to agree - if a movie entertains me it has done its job. This business of classifying directors according to artistic abiltiy is for the birds. I have seen some pretty good fucking movies that were made by no-names:

Harley Davidson and the Marlboro Man

Road House

Tin Cup

Lethal Weapon - part 1 of course -

And then I have seen some pretty shitty movies made by great directors:

Gangs of New York

Basic Instinct…oh wait, that was Sharon Stone

The Last Waltz…yes, another Scorsese film

Spartacus

and another one brought to you by Mr. Kubrick: Eyes Wide Shut

Oh, well…I’m sure I just made new enemies.

Get out.

Even Kubrick said that Spartacus sucked - there were too many fucking idiots messing with that one - for starters, he was given the project after the first director fucked it all up -

trivia: What was the historical significance in regards to the screenwriter of Spartacus?

To me, Spartacus is a great film, outstanding actually and I usually hate those type of movies.

I love Gangs of New York too

Without Spartacus, there wouldn’t be a Gladiator.

without Gladiator there wouldn’t be a hotel maid with a telephone imprint on her forehead!

the last waltz is genius

the thread is intersting but also kinda pointless----------tarantino and scorsese are both under my directors top 10 but its difficult to compare them since there styles are completely different

and to the thread strater who has never seen movie by marty here´s a list of (imho)the best SCORSEE flicks

Raging Bull

Mean Streets

Taxi Driver

Goodfellas

Cape Fear

and the no goes-----fpor which i´m likely to get bashed but who fuckin cares cause the following Scorsese flicks are REALLY not more than average:

The Departed(aka The Retarded)

Gangs Of New York

Aviator

and also sumthin thats off topic : Who agrees with me that a)Leo DiCaprio is not a good(like Spielberg ) use him so frequently???

AND

??????

I am in agreement: Gangs of New York and Aviator were pretty half-ass. The Departed was pretty good, but not his best. If he were to win an Oscar, it should have been for Taxi Driver or The Color of Money. Those were two really GREAT films. Scorsese is kind of hit-and-miss. Time will tell for Mr. Tarantino, but it seems that he is starting to obtain the same status. Hit-and-Miss - Ask yourself: How could the same guy make Pulp, Kill Bill, and Reservoir Dogs…and then Grindhouse?

Hey! Is this lets try to get a rise out of white boy day? I think it is!

Im sorry but does anyone really care about that maid, wrong place wrong time is the way i see it.

:o How dare you! The Departed is excellent.
