yes, i saw the film at the Toronto International Film Festival (Sept. 4 - 13, 2003). the region 2 DVD (in Japan) was released last week. Miramax is distrubuting the film in theatres next month in Canada and the United States but i fear they may have cut the film.
I’ve seen the international trailer and it looks great. First its simply Takeshi Kitano, one of the best filmmakers from Japan, and then it is a samurai-flick at its best! It would be really cool if Quentin Tarantino would release that flick at Rolling Thunder on DVD.
I just read that the movie’s coming to Germany in the theaters, great !

Yeah, Quentin can take partial credit like he did with Sonatine.
Supposedly, the new Zatoichi is just basically a trademark Beat Takeshi film with the samurai elements mixed in. Takeshi’s usual surprising violent scenes are still there, but it shows what takes place before and after the action scenes.
In response to Zatoichi - Darkness is his ally…This is the last Zatoichi in the series.  I’m not counting the new Kitano Zatoichi sense it’s a retelling and not part of the series.  All in All it was a good film however there are better zatoichi movies…may favorite being Zatoichi meets Yojimbo (1970)  Dir: Kihachi Okamoto
I´m on a german board for asian movies (and I´m the only one ther who knows nothing :’( ).
The people there are really movie geeks. And they normally don´t post shit.
They posted about the fact that first Miike should be involved in Zatoichi (2003) and that he gave it up, cuz the producers didn´t like his ideas.
Has someone here heard about it?
And hey, please don´t answer with. Hey cps, maybe you read it wrong, Kitanoe made Z-2003. I knew… I wanna read some sources about the Miike involving
miike’s idol is katsu shintaro and he’s been quoted saying something like “this is my treasure and I want to do something that is unlike my previous films, something simple and pure. the character is simple and calm. originally kitano wanted to star and direct this, but when he plays zatoichi, he doesnt see anything, how could he direct a movie like this?”. (from the book tokyoscope - 2001, written before miike was sacked)
since kitano produced the movie, i tend to believe this:
