The movie was shown at TIFF and apparently it’s good. Very good.

Don’t you think it’s a bit early for that? The movie was released theatrically three weeks ago.

Cool poster
[i]Looks like there is a new kid in town and his name is First Look Studios. That’s right the studio behind such international sensations as The Proposition and Paris, Je T’aime seem to be joining in on a select amount of buzzed about Asian titles.
First up to bat is Takashi Miike’s Sukiyaki Western Django. Trimmed of 25 minutes from the cut which had been making its rounds on the festival circuit, the film is now at a more healthier length for the international market. Many early reviews had mentioned it could shave off a good few minutes so it seems like that was key in the pruchase.
Also set up to take aim at US audiences courtesy of First Look Studios is the Alexi Tan directed Blood Brothers. John Woo, whose own film Bullet in the Head was the inspiration, produces.
No word as of yet whether both film will see the light of day in theaters or only on dvd.

The barebones disc is the usual 3800 yen, and the SE a nasty 6800 yen. Stores like amazon and HMV offer good pre-order discount, but both use damn expensive shipping methods (depends a bit where you live) so to most customers it’s gonna be cdjapan.co.jp vs yesasia. Start saving now, and in case you’re gonna get the SE buy a Rambo knife too (you’re gonna need it when dealing with the customs).
Notice the running time, 121 min. This should be the original version, not the shorter US edit.

Takashi Miikes’s sukiyaki western is not a remake of the Sergio Corbucci original but has a slight connection to it. The new age eastern suffers from some irritating flaws such as unnecessary playing with colours and contrast, but manages to entertain as a whole. Shot fully in English the dialogue spoken by the Japanese cast can prove challenging to understand at times, but it’s not as bad as some people would let you understand. At 120 min the film feels long but not necessarily in a bad way. Nevertheless, the first 60 minutes could do with some tweaking as not all scenes are entirely successful. The second half is more enjoyable and also packs a very stylish finale. The new Djago theme is excellent but only used at the very end of the film (which is for a reason, though). On Miike’s career Django marks another mainstream effort, although there’s a handful of scenes that remind you of who exactly is sitting behind the camera.
Tarantino fan note: QT is the film for about 10 minutes

Not the best transfer, I’m afraid. Otherwise it’s perfectly fine but there’s loads of edge enhancement. I wouldn’t expect the possible upcoming KR and HK discs to be any better but who knows. At least they’ll be cheaper. US release is probably not worth waiting for since the US theatrical version is heavily cut. The French might put up a dream package in the future, but it depends on the studio. If it goes to Studio Canal there will probably be just as much edge enhancement. And no matter which country / release you’ll probably lose some of the extras.
