why are you insulted us because we like a movie that you don’t? >:(
regarless of how “sick” it might be, it is still a great movie.
What is it with the Japanese people that makes them LOVE such extreme, weird-ass shit
as for the whole japanese thing, from the little i know about the japanese culture, EVERYTHING is extreme, so why should violence in movies be any different?
First off, my purpose was not to insult anybody. Feel free to enjoy the movie all you want. Believe me, I would have wanted to like this, too. Sure, many of the scenes were nicely done. I just couldn’t enjoy those elements, because the story itself was so sick and nihilistic, it made me want to puke at times. It had scenes that were there just for the gore and shocking value, no other purpose.
As for the Japanese, I know it’s supposed to be extreme, but it’s funny because everytime I think of Japanese people, I think of overly-friendly, smiling, short people with cameras. It’s kinda hard to think of such people watching (and making) such movies.
And don’t get me wrong, I like Japanese cinema very much, but Ichi in particular just crossed the line for me.
Yeah, aren’t they like that? I like the Japanese. ÂÂ
Yeah, I’ve seen some manga, some of which I like, and some of which I don’t. And the reason why I don’t like some of it is more or less the same everytime. It is either too weird, UFO, like Pokemon or Dragonball Z (ok,so those are for kids, but still…), or it’s too exaggerated. The latter of which Ichi was.
In Ichi, I can live with the killings. You see stuff like that almost everywhere nowadays, wasn’t much of a shock really. But why the hell did it have to feast on the rapes and abuse of young girls? That didn’t bring much more value the movie, and that’s where I definitely draw the line of being gross.
the japanese pop culture is extreme in all aspects, whether it is “too weird,” “too violent,” “too sexually graphic,” “too exaggerated,” or whatever. japan is constantly pushing the limits with what they do in the media and pop culture. the fact that Ichi the Killer is an extremely violent, sexually graphic film is a given because it is a perfect example of the japanese pop culture.
I find that girls in Japan follow this “lets look younger image” that really sickens me. Note that in Ichi there is NO nudity, in Japan, the showing of a cock or vagina in a film is totally tabbo, yet they show extremely violent films that rate Pg-12 there (Battle Royale was Pg-12 I think  :-/)
On a side note about Takashi Miike, I just picked up his first internationally known film “Shinjuku Triad Society”. I’ve heard it’s a vile twist on the crime genre. I’m looking forward to that and the rest of the films in the trilogy!
I’ve been planning to see Ichi for a year now, and today I finally did. I finished it half an hour ago. I really only have one thing to say about this film. It was some of THE SICKEST, MOST PERVERTED, MOST DISTURBING, WEIRD-ASS SHIT I’ve EVER seen! And I’ve seen a lot of that, believe me!
I mean, I have nothing against graphical violence, but this is just WAAAY out of line. I knew what was coming, and I didn’t expect it to be a joyride, but still I’m confused. What is it with the Japanese people that makes them LOVE such extreme, weird-ass shit time after another?
I think I have to go watch some Teletubbies now or something, because I need to calm the fuck down.  :o

I dunno, I was never grossed out by Ichi, are you a horror fan by chance? I can’t imagine too many horror fans, particularly those who have seen a few Italian horrors, would find the film all that damaging. Maybe it’s just me though. Anyway, I figure if a film can provoke such a strong reaction from anybody, it makes me respect it all the more.
I won’t even get into the Japanese culture thing, they have some odd birds over there no doubt, and that is precisely why I love them

I just saw Ichi for the first time for one hour. It is a great movie, def.
I can understand that some people have problems with seeing violence (I have to admit, that I close my eyes for 1 - 3 seconds during the “tongue-scene”, cuz I´m a very…hm… sensitive person ;D, okay if you wannt weak), but it´s not pervet (sp?) in the way they shown it.
The violence is shown to underline and explain the character and the plot.
Altough you can see some hard things, they all fit in the scene. And the way it was filmed, well IMO it´s great. The first what I thought was, wow the coulors! It was well filmed and all in all a great movie to see!
It´s difficult to explain thing in english for me, cuz I can´t find enough words to make it good.
OK, so maybe my first comments on this came out a little wrong. I never meant to say Ichi was a bad movie. Like pantsman aptly put it, if a film can provoke such feelings, it really can’t be bad. Because nothing is actually worse than a movie being totally ordinary with nothing to remember. I sure as hell will remember Ichi a while.
But no matter how hard I try, I really can’t say I enjoyed this movie. To enjoy, in this case meaning “taking a girl to the first date, holding hands, eating popcorn”-type of enjoyment. I’m not sure if anyone can say they enjoyed it in that way, unless they have a major srewloose.
My point being that this is probably one of the most intense and disturbing piece of cinema I have ever seen. I didn’t actually see that coming because no other graphical movie has ever disturbed me this much. I’m not saying this is a bad thing, in fact it’s quite the opposite, but “LIKE or ENJOY” to me sound like incorrect verbs when it comes to this movie.
I just saw Ichi the killer today, and on the DVD they claim it to be uncut, but I only got to see some things on Bullets list on page 2. For example, I didn’t get to see the first killing by ichi, I only saw the blood and guts, but I did see some other things on the list. Is it half-cut or something?

Its almost this cover, only it’s just 1 disc.

I won’t worry too much about it. Not to bash on him or anything, but Bullet didn’t do a perfect job of dipecting everything in the movie. You don’t really see Ichi killing the guys, you just see blood and a face or two slide down a door.
I always thought this movie was like a really fucked-up superhero story. It’s a great film, though. The ending is great. The film really has an anti-violence message, that violence is never justified. At least the violence in the movie isn’t. Kakihara is so cool but so evil. And what was with the bodybuilder old guy?
i have to say when i first saw this movie i realy didnt like it all to much becuase i didnt get the ending to well but im going to have to see it agien now, but i was just wondering whats a manga movie?
When I saw the trailer for the uncut version of Ichi, I thought this would be some fucked up shit. But I saw the edited version and that was fairly disturbing in itself. But I just now recently saw the full uncut version and it didn’t really have the same effect on me that the trailer and cut version did. I think I was already used to everything so it just didn’t seem that disturbing at all. I don’t think this movie is intense or seems disturbing because of the violence or gore, but because of the evil characters and the lack of any real caring that they have for anything. What got under my skin most the first time I watched this was the scene where Kakihara explains to Karen about giving the other person pleasure through pain as she punches him as he’s tied up in chains. It’s the thought itself more than the actual violence. But anyway, the movie is very bloody at times but it’s mostly for comic effect like in Kill Bill and isn’t really that graphic at all.
I still have one question that nobody’s answered yet: was the ex-cop really Ichi’s brother or did Jiji just tell Ichi that for some reason? If so, why exactly did he do that?
Ichi didn’t really have a ‘profound’ violence effect, on me. It certainly holds it’s place, though. Recently I had a gang of people over at my house, and the first movie that came to my mind was Ichi. I popped it in, and within minutes people were on the floor laughing, gagging, crying. It was great. There’s no denying the violence, but somehow Ichi just isn’t THAT nasty, and I think Miike ment it that way.

Well, I saw the film yesterday, the last time was two years ago I believe, and I fucking loved it, again. About Kaneko (the cop), that’s what I’m wondering too IL_Bueno. I think he wasn’t really Ichi’s brother but Jiji told it to Ichi for some reason. Maybe because Jiji felt and knew Kaneko wasn’t a bad guy in heart and he wanted to spare him by telling this to Ichi. (We all know that was in vain because Ichi doesn’t like it when he get’s fucked with, or get’s shot in his leg…) I don’t know, but one thing I do know, this film is awesome and unlike any other film you’ve ever seen, so…go watch it!
