Is it just me or does anyone else find these types of films sadistic? I will check it out though, sounds interesting.
Dead or Alive (one) is the best hands down. It’s very thrilling, violent and all around cool. You can’t beat the utterly INSANE first 7 minutes of crazy shit, then the film slows the fuck down to the point where it’s basically stopped. Miike slaps another fucked up ending in your face.
Dead or Alive: Birds, is WAY more relaxed and is very different then the first. It has heart and humor then the grit and brutality that the first one has. The story is great and it’s much less violent then the first, the only real stuff pops up around the middle and it is awesome!
Dead or Alive: Final didn’t really do much for me. It’s post-apocalyptic story is kinda silly, it focuses on weirdness rather then plot or the characters and the action is pretty tame (but there is more then 2). The crazy editing and camera angles were a plus, there is some good acting and the finale kicks ass.
Dead or Alive is a great series. I hope you like em’ Starkey!
I know i’m going to like Dead or Alive, actually there’s no doubt in my mind. But after I watch the Dead or Alive movies, i’m gonna’ see “City of Lost Souls”, no matter what people tell me about it.
What was the name of that other Takashi Miike flick that had the kids dancing of the front of the DVD?
ONE LAST QUESTION, How was “Full Metal”?, and why does the main character look so stupid?
The ones with the kids dancing around is called, Happiness of the katakuris. I’m not in too much of a rush to see that soon. Full Metal was alright, alot of weird shit and violence but nothing else really. Pantsman digs it, I thought it was alright.
I recommend Fudoh over it!

Sadistic, in the case of Ichi the Killer, yes, but that’s kind of the point. It’s a story that uses S&M as a shell to flesh out a story, definitely have to expect some brutality in there. That doesn’t mean it’s all about violence or for sick weirdoes or anything like that, just try to take away all your expectations before watching it.
Bullet nailed pretty much everything. I think the first two Dead or Alive films are nearly equal in terms of greatness. I also like the third one, but there’s no getting past the fact it’s a drop in quality from the other two films. Besides, DOA2 has somewhat of a Miike trademark, a giant blurred out penis! Hard not to love a film with a giant blurred out penis, but maybe that’s me.
Happiness of the Katakuris is one of the few musicals I really like. It’s funny, creative and by far the darkest singing/dancing flick I’ve ever seen. Imagine a dark comedy dealing with murder and the disposing of bodies, but throw in a rock opera with dancing zombies and the craziest use of claymation you’ll likely ever see, and that’s basically the film you get. Full Metal Yakuza isn’t for everyone’s taste perhaps, and it’s certainly not Miike’s strongest film, but it’s the kind of flick you can sit back and laugh with. If I were to review it right now, it would get a 4 out of 5. No doubt though, Fudoh would certainly get a 5. Both were made for the straight to video market, and both look like they were shot for Full Moon Pictures, but there’s a lot of fun to be had. Yakuza also features a giant penis cough, but there’s a lot more to it than that. It’s a wild trip, a lot of genre-bending craziness. It’s like a million different films boiled into one and shot on a very limited budget. You either get into it or not, but hell, I’m likely just crazy biased because it’s Miike. I don’t think anyone would deny it certainly has a lot of great moments to it though.
Seems like Miike’s popularity is blowing up these days, I don’t think we have to worry about him making the jump to Hollywood anytime soon though ;D
I’m not sure if I’m talking about the right thing, (because I haven’t seen Ichi the Killer) but…
Some people consider Kill Bill to be sadistic. I don’t think this is the case. Not bad sadism in any case. This is tongue-in-cheek sadism, if sadism at all. Now, take a film like House of 1000 Corpses. That is a sadistic film. Bad sadism. Sadism where they torture people for the better part of 90 mins and expect for you to enjoy it. To me, sadism is in the form of entertainment being derived from a movie, not in the act of violence itself.
Well Holiday if you put it that way… I think your better off NOT seeing Ichi The Killer. Ichi is one of THE MOST brutal and sadistic things I have ever seen. But on the other hand some of it is played for laughs and tries not to be outragously shocking. I recommend you see the trailer someplace before seeing it, or even actually find the cut version and watch it, cause if you can handle that then you should move on to the uncut edition. :-/
This movie ages like wine, I swear to god it does. Every time I watch it, I see something new.
I feal the same way. I finish watching it fealing like I got everything, then I watch it again and catch a few new things. Nothing huge or anything, but it makes me feal/understand Ichi, the character, more.
So I’ve got to see
"Visitor Q"
"Dead or Alive 1, 2 and 3"
“City of Lost Souls”
"Fudoh"
Maybe “Full Metal”
If I’m luckey “Happiness of the Katakuris”
Well…I watched the trailer…and…well…I’m horrified. Tell me a little more about this:
How bad is the trailer?
Is it the trailer for the uncut version?
How bad is the cut version?
In what ways is the uncut version better?
I think thats about it…now I’m interested…and horrified…
There is only one trailer and what you saw in that trailer is basically what you see in the cut version. The cut version still has some pretty violent stuff in it, the it’s violent enough to reach a rating of catogory 3 in hong kong (That’s like an Nc-17 rating here) and the rape scenes are still in it as well as some of the funnier gore scenes. Ummmm I think the cut version has roughly 18 minutes cut alot of is actually dialouge, like Kakihara’s (the freaky looking dude) intro and a vital plot scene is cut.
The uncut version is better for all the violence and dialouge that was cut is now in (obviously). There is no trailer for the uncut version. I don’t know what to say besides everything is left in…
Alright. Thanks!
What’s the running time for the uncut version? Because I have it on VCD and you guys are starting to worry me because now I’m thinking that it might be the cut version.
Also, I don’t know why anyone hasn’t mentioned it yet, but I think one of the funniest yet most brutal things about this movie is that it’s soooo fuckin mysogynistic.
Uncut is 126 minutes.
Cut is 118 minutes.
What’s also on the cover of your VCD? Because there is one version that is cut no matter what. If you can find a picture of it then I’ll know, or if you tell me whats on it.
On the cover is Kakihara smoking a cigarette, looking up in a sort of dreamy state, and there are a bunch of people in the background just walking around the city or something.
Sorry Deaner you have the cut version.
FUCK!! What are some extreme scenes that got cut?
I don’t know really…
- Ichi’s first killing, only see the blood and guts on the wall?
- Hooked up man & shrimp fat
- Guy cuts off tongue - I think that was cut
(Added) Ichi slices that guy in half then kills whore - Cut
- Woman’s fingers are snapped back
- Anjo gang are massacred by Ichi
- Ichi kills ‘Ms Tachibana’ - Probably Trimmed
- Ichi’s mate gets needles in his face (I’m not sure when this bit is)
- The Chinese Pimp gets needles in his face, then his arm is ripped off
- Ichi kills the Anjo member (who helped him)
- Ichi kills kid - Cut
- Ichi kills kakihara
Thats all I have off the top of my head but most of them you actually see but there is some bound to be cut out. And the two rape scenes also.
Shit, that’s cutting off all of the great parts, what a fucking loss.
Takashi Miike is a damn good director. I just finished watching “Happiness of the Katakuris” by him and am pleased to say it is my favorite musical, which it isn’t up against much anyways, but it was still fucking great. It was funny too. They guy’s done everything. Action, Thriller, Drama, Musical you name it. The Dead or Alive series is next for me. I can’t believe I still haven’t seen it.
About Dead or Alive…
Starkey…
Oh jesus…You’re gonna have a lot to rant about on the 1st Dead Alive :-/
