Sukeban Deka

I’m split over this.

I think that they found the perfect actress for the role in Aya, but they found her about four years too late. I also think that they picked the wrong director. I’m not a blindly obsessed Miike fan by any stretch of the imagination, and I’m often quite critical of his work, but I think it would be a nice career circle for the man who directed Speed in ALIVE to return to the juvenile adventure tale with a madcap adaptation of my absolute favorite manga/tv series. It would be so wild and crazy, which is exactly what it should be. I think the best we can hope for from Kenta is a workmanlike offering -no more or less inspired than anybody else. I’d love to be wrong about this, too. I love Sukeban Deka. While I’ve been whitling down my DVD collection, and unloading a lot of my books, the one thing I’ve never even thought of getting rid of is my Sukeban Deka toy collection.

Hopefully Duncan will be reissuing the SD yo-yo, now.

Some old news: “Toei had its biggest year yet at Cannes (US$650,000) with YO YO GIRL COP (the SUKEBAN DEKA movie) sold to Celestial in Hong Kong and Rapid Eye in Germany.”

Btw, Aya is turning 20 today. Happy birthday Aya

I watched the first Sukeban Deka film last night and thought it was pretty cool. The film was enjoyable, even though it was constantly referring to the TV show. Sukeban Deka girls from different seasons teaming up, old villains showing up, the ultimate yo-yo etc. I’m sure those were moments you can only truly appreciate if you’ve seen the original series. But even if you haven’t, the film is still a lot of fun. It felt a bit slow at times, but there’s also a lot of cool scenes here and there. After several enjoyable but campy fight scenes I was really surprised by how great the final battle was. The last 20 minutes was worth the price alone. The soundtrack is pretty cool too, and the japanese high school girls were so cute in the 80’s

Okay, that did it. I’ve been secretely waiting for your review, now I’m gonna buy “Sukeban Deka” as soon as possible. Did you know, that there’s also a subbed sequel available, “Counter-Attack drom the Kazama Sisters”?

By the way, do you know an online-shop for RC-1-DVDs which supports payment through paypal and does not require a Credit Card?

Haha, I know.

What a stupid question ;D

That’s the R2J cover (most US online stores use incorrect cover art (for both movies)). This is the actual cover art:

Yesasia is stocking US dvds nowadays. But they are very expensive (as usual) and seem rather slow (unlike usual) when it comes to R1s

It seems dvdplanet also accepts paypal. I usually get my R1s from dvdpacific, but I’ve used them every once in a while. Prices are slighly higher, delivery times pretty much identical. But they don’t have Jessica… :’(

News from the upcoming Kenta-Fukasaku Flick. Check out the following clip from a japanese TV-News-Flash. Seems like it’ll be one hell of a guilty pleasure, after all.

Slow-Motion-Bitch-Battle-Action featuring hot Yo-Yo-Vixens! 8)

And Aya Matsuura’s evil antagonist, Rika Ishikawa, certainly doesn’t look evil on these pictures:

That clip looks terrible. But the girls look great, so I’m not losing my hope yet. And I love Aya’s voice when she’s acting tough

Rika

The girls are fine, the costumes are alright, the CGI isn’t. That was a 91 second clip and I already got bored.

Now I’m even more confused.

For those not completely convinced yet:

God Dammit, that made my day

Theme-Song from “Sukeban Deka: The Movie” in a slightly shortened version, performed by Yoko Minamino herself. I just thought I’d share it with you guys. Be careful, or you might end up with an earwig. I got one already.

They work for me, and they look Awesome!

R2J coming 21/4/2007

Two editions, a 3990 yen standard edition and a 9,765 yen ????? edition. For that price, a live high school girl better be included…

And check out the new website with new intro and music: http://www.sukeban.jp/

One like this:

But unfortunately no. As I expected, yo-yo is included (I’m sure everybody guessed it, didn’t bother to mention it before).
Collector’s edition features picture-labeled discs, deluxe outer case, and bonus disc with release footage, commemorative event video, theatrical introduction, special discussion between Yuki Saito and Aya Matsuura, staff and cast interviews, and photo galleries. Also includes bonus blue plastic pinned yo-yo–just like in the film.
No subs of course. Doesn’t matter. The girls look nice, but it takes more than subs to convince me into to buying this on R2J. I’m trying to save some money nowadays (with little success). Maybe when a HK dvd appears…

I’m currently deep into the “Sukeban Deka”-Series, and so far it’s nothing short of awesome.

Without subtitles, of course, but there’s so much going on that you hardly need them. For all the rest there’s rough plot-summaries available online. And I’m seriously challenging you: Can a movie, that features japanese schoolgirls fighting each other with Yo-Yos, Whips, Brass Knuckles and various Ninja-Arsenal like Iron-Claws and Flails, really be bad? No, it can’t.

Violence-wise there’s nothing outrageous to be found, since this has been mainly made for a Teen-Audience. There’s some knockouts, bad beat-ups, that’s it. Also the main-villains are hardly, if ever being killed, they’re just being knocked out, bound up and left for the police. Hehe, it’s exploitation for Kids. 8)

Some screenshots of an episode I’ve just been watching:

90-Seconds-Trailer from japanese TV for Kenta Fukasaku’s “Sukeban Deka”:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=G_WNkRYBebo

Now, that I’ve seen the first season of the 80s-Series (currently I am way into the second one), it really seems like they DID a good job, after all, capturing the feeling of the original “Sukeban Deka”-Franchise, that is. Despite the hillarious concept it’s supposed to be a rather dark and serious movie, and that’s a pretty damn good thing.

Well, I know, this is kinda offtopic, but Aya Matsuura is in it, so maybe not.

But seriously, can you handle this video without going insane? :o  (And, no, I’m not talking about the music)
