Paul Thomas Anderson

I think Adam Sandlers character in Punch Drunk Love was very strongly written and had a personal, idiosyncratic touch to it. It would be nice to see QT stretch his writing ability and try and write people who aren’t “cool” all the time.

Awww, but that’s what I love so much about QT’s characters.

I liked PDL quite a bit, but Boogie Nights is just crazy awesome to me. I do need to watch PDL again though. Haven’t seen it for a good long while.

I agree, Tarantino works more like a playwright, you have to read in between to grasp the character. I hate it when people say that Tarantino writes about common people - I disagree.

Since when is a hitman who recites Bible passages before blowing a guys head off common? His conversations were mundane back until Jackie Brown - then they just got weirder, you could tell they were written. I also think his ability to cast the right people for his films has veered - I mean Eli Roth was not perfect for Basterds- he’s not an actor, hell, he’s not even a good filmmaker!

Paul Thomas Anderson doesn’t let favoritism or friendship with people intervene with his casting - he eiather: A)Writes for his friends like Julianne Moore or B)Chooses the right person for the role. He also has the ability to procure great performances from his actors by allowing them to find their place - he works on a whim, there’s no tape on the floor so actors can find their mark, he just works on instinct - I think. Well that’s what I read on an article anyways.

But I like PTA better. What I love about QT more than anything is his structure, Paul makes movies with real people.

QT characters are larger than life fantasy characters in his own world.

PTA characters are for the most part, in real life, dealing with real life issues.

I think PTA was quite similar to QT in the early days with both sydney and boogie nights having a sort of “real life” intervenes kind of thing going on e.g. when they rob Alfred molinas house in Boogie Nights his house is on a hill which causes the getaway car to roll down the hill. A “Real Life” gangster movie world ala Reservoir Dogs and Pulp Fiction.

Magnolia and Punch Drunk Love kind of fell into the “magical realism” world. where a world governed by logic and continuity is presented to the audience with inexplicable, unexplainable and implausible things happening here and there. eg. The frogs in magnolia and the accordian in PDL. (theres a case to be made that Kill Bill and Inglourius Basterds fit in to this world too).

There Will be Blood is my favourite film of the 2000’s but I havent figured out where that fits yet…

and also that thing of not working with any marks must make it impossible to match up two shot, shot, reverse shot stuff…unless he just uses it for steadicam/set pieces. PTA = best in the business at the moment.

Yes he is.

I hope he comes out soon and give a hint of a new project, if he is going to do one. If I made Punch-Drunk Love then There Will Be Blood right after, I would retire. 8)
