Paul Thomas Anderson

You should hear the commentary as well, he gives some insight on his writing and how it took him 2 1/2 weeks to complete the entire screenplay. He also talks about his father Ernie Anderson who was known as “Ghoulardi” - a famous character in Cleveland that introduced old horro movies, “Stay Sick” was his famous line. I miss the fact that he caesed to make commentaries for his pictures. I guess since Magnolia he just didn’t have it in him to sit three or so hours to record one, that’s too bad though.

I’ve heard that commentary actually, it’s one of my favorites. The Boogie Nights one is pretty good too, like the part two to the Hard Eight commentary. Although I kind of like how he didn’t do one for Magnolia. The one I’d love to see any kind of making of on is There Will Be Blood though. It’s such a mystery.

they have some great articles on his red vines web site.

I really dig that website. The news is a little sparse but I do have it on my bookmarks and check it all the time. The only filmmaker I love as much as QT is PTA. In a distant third Sergio Leone. Right now the news I’m on pins and needles about is his next flick. You don’t make a movie like There Will Be Blood and not take some time off so the time lapse is cool, I just can’t wait to find out what it is he’ll be doing next.

Rumors indicate that it might be a horror film, but who knows. PT is an unpredictable guy, I can’t even imagine what he’ll do next. Hopefully it’s a horror film.

Whatever he does it’ll be a Paul Thomas Anderson film, that’s enough. I really liked the rumor from a while back about the Indian casino owner, or something like that. He handled Reno so well in Hard Eight, it’d be a cool way of coming full circle.

I discovered another “Sidney” refrence.

The shot that PT holds on Sidney in the hotel room, where he is seeing an unknown terror after flicking on the hotel light reminded me so much of the William Wyler scene in the Citadel prison. In the prison the family of Ben Hur are being checked for their release, and he holds the camera on the guard’s face which expresees nothing but terror. And he never pays off the scene until the very next scene! It’s a very effective method of filmmaking that will leave your feet shaking with angst!

never seen Sydney, but Boogie nights is his best film in my honest opinion. his use of music in that movie is great, almost like a Scorsese flick

I always thought it was his most Scorsese like flick. Absolutely love it, even though his best movie is Magnolia.

I liked Boogie Nights better. Just for pure entertainment value.

For pure entertainment value Boogie Nights for sure. I just think Magnolia is the better movie.

Paul Thomas Anderson is so overrated. Hes good but not great.

Get th fuck outta here. Paul Thomas Anderson is the man! He's the blues cruise! He's the cheese to my macaroni bitch! He's just as good as QT if you ask me. Can't live without PT.

You can learn so much by reading his scripts and watching his movies.

So right. Those two have always been two sides of the same coin (to me at least), love the Brando/Clift comparison QT made to their relationship. He’s always been the one constant filmmaker of the last ten or so years in my opinion.

Why does almost every QT-fan like PTA as well? It’s one of my favorites too, after QT of course.

I’d rank his films like this:

  1. There will be Blood (10/10)
  2. Punch-Drunk Love (10/10)
  3. Magnolia (9/10)
  4. Boogie Nights (8/10)

(Haven’t seen Hard Eight yet :’()

Paul Thomas Anderson>Quentin Tarantino. Now where is that Smilie that does that hiding thing? ;D

Depending on the day one or the other is always my favorite.

Watch Hard Eight! An amazing movie. Or at least I thought it was amazing.

Tarantinos a better writer

I think QT loves his characters more when writing, and that makes the difference.

I think PTA loved Dirk a lot, but to me, none of his other characters have had that same amount of TLC put into them. Not like QT, where the love for the character comes across from writing to screen. Might have a bit to do with the casting, but I don’t think as much as the pure love for his creations.
