Finally saw this for the first time last night. I didn’t really know anything about
it except that everyone who’s seen it loved it so when I found a screener I
figured what the hell. I can’t see anything stopping this movie from topping my
best of ‘07 list but I haven’t seen There Will be Blood yet. Thinkin’ I might read
the script just to see how it stacks up with the final film.

Yeah, nor is The Ladykillers, but you know what I mean

True
Saw this last night… i liked it… also very close to the novel…but a lot of people in the audience sounded a little gob smacked at the ending…

Hey, who didnt. I still wrestle with it. I saw it twice to make sure I didnt miss anything. For awhile I thought Moss crashed into the car as part of his "special project". Most will not like the ending, its another cult hit for the Bros. IMO.
I saw it a couple of days ago. Great film. I loved it. Josh Brolin was great and so was Javier Bardem.

I agree it is a great film. Brolin isn’t getting enough praise for his role. He was really good in this movie. Javier Bardem outshines everyone, although Tommy Lee was great too. I’d love to see it again.
I don’t know why this movie didn’t get the recognition it should have at the Cannes Film Festival. It was so stunning that they didn’t get anything. They should have something for the best actor (Javier Bardem could have get it), or the best screenpaly (even if it’s an adaptation) or the directing. I was really stunned.

Well, TIME listed it as the film of the year and so did EMPIRE. Plus, I know I’ve seen it on other “Best of the year” lists. The critics love it. I guess it just wasn’t lucky at Cannes. It’s a shame.
I think some people in the cinema just wanted to see a conventional thriller or action film… i heard some guy yell at the credits " WHAAAT?" But in reflection I liked the way things developed…

That reminds me. I saw it in the US and before it there was a music video that was basically an ad for the National Guard. When it finished people were yelling, “Propaganda!” It was hilarious.
Alright, great movie… But that ending…
SPOILER.
The movie builds up to some “shit happens” monologue by the Sheriff?
Anton walks into the sunset with his arm damaged?
Did Leswyen really die?

At first I thought Llewelyn Moss hit Anton with the car because I didnt realize he was killed at the hotel. I thought it was the Mexicans that died.
I like the movie but I dont think its their best at all. In fact, I think its highly over rated for some reason that I can’t figure out. Almost evryone hated Death Proof but LOVE this film. I would pick DP over it any day and im a HUGE Coen fan.

It sounds weird

It sort of has that unchanged men in changing times. You hear Tommy Lee talk about how the “old school” cops didin’t even carry any guns, and he even wonders how they might of handled the new set of circumstances that he is seeing today. “No Country For Old Men” means that those times are nothing but gone and there’s no more room for people like him in this world. That’s my opinion anyways .
My 16 yr old son and I saw this and were very confused, we were waiting for something to happen that never did. THEN, saw it on bootleg a second time and loved it. My confusion is in the bootleg, the audience laughed about 20 times…wtf was so funny??
I’ve never been a big fan of the Coens, The Big Lebowski has been the only one of their flicks that I’ve loved. Others I’ve considered just ok although I still have to see Barton Fink and rewatch Fargo.
But this was a really good movie. Often it’s good dialogue that gets me the most excited but thinking why I liked this movie so much, I keep thinking of those scenes where there’s little to no dialogue at all, just suspenseful silence punctuated by natural sounds. Only after the movie was done, I realized that there was hardly any music. Also I had heard a lot about the “unsatisfying ending” but the final scene was one of my favourites. Maybe one of the scenes leading up to it could’ve been handled a little better. Trying not to spoil it, basically one major plot point was brushed off a little too hastily.
Like I said, I’m not that big of a fan of the Coens but No Country for Old Men proved to me that their technical abilities are on a very high level, even if their stories don’t always speak to me that much. I’m a bigger fan of PT Anderson and I’d like to see the director Oscar go to him this year but having yet not seen There Will Be Blood, this was very much a director’s movie and Oscar-worthy at that.

they laughed alot in the theater during There Will Be Blood during the “I’ve abandoned my boy” scene. I kept thinking, why the fuck are they laughing?
I better go against a minority here and say, I found it tiresome.
Visually stunning. Set in Texas, El Paso making a glorious appearance, but the story was filler for a good cinematography.
Good points: Tommy Lee Jones, Kelly MacDonald and the wonderful cameo by Beth Grant. The coin scene from the gas station and the scene involving the manager of the trailer park, putting Javier in his place. The ending. I LOVED the ending. I love directors who don’t give you a proper ending to a film. That takes balls.
The not so good points: Javier Bardem was frightening in his first two scenes but he become almost an exaggerated version of the character as the movie dragged on. The lack of policing with the amount of bloodshed going on around was hard to swallow.
I think the Coen brothers are the best scriptwriters in Hollywood. For me, no one, not even QT, comes close. But this movie is very overrated.
I was watching this film again a while ago and I noticed something, a minor “circa” error. So everyone knows the scene were Chagurh is eyeing through Moss’ phone bill, this film takes place in the mid to late 70s and back then there were only 7 digits, the area code was not in effect yet. So yes look again and you will see 10 digit numbers instead of 7. It doesn’t matter, just wanted to see if anyone noticed that.
Money grubber Tommy Lee Jones wants more money!

Unbelievable. That guy knew the Coen wanted to shoot it cheap, no high casting to spend more money. I didn’t know Tommy Lee Jones was so…
