So cool news about Machete going straight to dvd. Man I wish Thanksgiving was coming to straight to dvd…Im more interested in that than machete really.

Really? I’m not, though it’d be cool if they all get went on DVD.

Im gonna go see Grindhouse at a drive in so…

Seeing it at the drive in, man that’d be so cool… unfortunately I’m in the UK so slim to no chance of being able to do that.

The whole ethic of the film is that kind of pulpy, drive in, straight-to-video aesthetic. I’ve recently written a short article about Tarantino and Grindhouse. It raises the question about cult’s new commercialism and however good Grindhouse is, should QT (the significant director of the 90’s) now be moving on from precious movies such as Kill Bill 1 & 2 that reference his own formative film-viewing habits. My own perspective is undecided as after the KB’s I was disappointed and decided I wasn’t going to get involved with the hype for Grindhouse, but I failed and am now busting at the seams to see this manic double header!

My article is at <LINK_TEXT text=“http://www.artswom.co.uk/2007/03/14/tar … %e2%80%a6/”>http://www.artswom.co.uk/2007/03/14/tarantino-is-an-artist-but…/</LINK_TEXT>, it’d be cool to hear what your take on the situation is…

ArtsWom I appreciate your honesty as well as your thoughts/views on this. You were dissapointed by Kill Bill? Thats too bad. I thought it was great. Some of QTs best film work yet IMO.

Personally, I really dont think Tarantino is the kind of guy who will change completely from his pulpy style to more watered down cinema. He plans on making EVERY movie he does a exciting genre vehicle. But that doesnt necessarily mean they will all be Grindhouse type films. I dont think hes a guy who wants to deliver a particular overall message with his movies either. I see him more as the storyteller who sits at the campfire with his friends and tells wild and crazy stories. Only he does it with movies. Id rather have him doing what he does best and what hes interested in, than try to please people who arent part of his audience. I have a feeling QT will be trying other kinds of movies in the future. Youll be seeing a PG QT kids film someday and maybe other more family oriented films before he retires. Although they will still be made for himself (what he would want to see if he was 10 y/o again) as well as for the family audiences.

Nice! When does this issue hit the stands?

These are the april issues, should come out in the next ten days.

Quotes from the interviews

Fergie on what attracted her to star in violent movie Grindhouse: “I tend to be attracted to dark, demented things. I love blood, guns, and knives. I like to play with my dark side.

Fergie on working with Quentin Tarantino: “In one scene Quentin got really into the character and bit me. I’m not going to sue him or anything. It was crazy cool.

Thank God I’m (somehow) subscribed to Maxim!!

You dont want to know what the GH Forums were saying about the magazine…the admin posted the thread and titled it “Sluts R Us” :frowning:

Anyway cool covers.

Isn’t Grindhouse about putting as much exploitable elements(quote R.R.) in a movie as you can. These chicks certainly are sell-able…

Don’t get me wrong I think Tarantino and his work are great and will undoubtedly catch Grindhouse when it comes out. However, KB (potentially GH too) regardless of it’s quality in terms of entertainment, ‘splatter’ sentiments and pulp references is a watering down in comparison to Reservoir Dogs, Pulp Fiction and Jackie Brown. It’s the whole idea of his works significance fading not the actual content of the film’s themselves.

There is a danger that substance will give way to style and what bothers me is that in a QT film the two don’t have to be exclusive, they should exist side by side as in his previous work, he’s that good!

Well dont forget, Kill Bill was QTs foray into his Movie Movie Universe, and that is where style really takes precident over substance. When you watch a Kung Fu or Horror film, do you want to see an important statement from the director or something that just excites you and makes you love the ART of cinema more? I choose the latter. Theres no rulebook that says: QT must deliver significant content with each film he makes. Id say he has more in common with a director like Sergio Leone as opposed to Stanley Kubrick.

In that last sentence you named my three favourite directors :stuck_out_tongue:

I think he just might do that too. It would way out of left field for most people, but I know he has that side to him. I said before, it might have some similarities to Don Coscarelli's KENNY & CO. (still trying to find a copy of that...)

It also inspired me to start writing my own kids script, set in the late '70s early '80s, somewhat based on my own childhood, but exaggerated for good measure... its about kids obsessed with nuclear war and the post-apocalyptic future... and its a feel-good coming of age comedy... :D

This films gonna be f*ckin killer.
