[news] Grind House buzzer

i emailed a buddy of mine that nytimes article and this is a portion of the email he sent me back which got me thinking…

i know i’m gonna be pissed off when the “missing reel"

thing happens. also, it seems like it will actually say

"MISSING REEL” on screen when it happens. that’s kinda stupid—

if you go see a movie that’s missing a reel, they don’t notify you

of that fact on screen----you just don’t see the missing 20 minutes!

i really hope they actually filmed the footage that would have been

the missing reel and it’ll be on the dvd. they should also "remove"

the scratches and dirt and release it as a “restored” version on dvd!

also, they should wait like 5 years before releasing it on dvd----

and claim it took that long to find the missing reels and professionally

restore the prints!

its true, if this were a “new” film, they wouldn’t tell you there was a reel missing…it would just be missing…so does that mean, these movies take place in the 70-80’s and they are being presented AS films that came out in that time period? whats the deal there?

the dvd should include the missing reel…that would be amazing…were the “missing” reels filmed?

also, the whole missing reel thing makes much more sense when these movies were supposed to be like an hour a piece…but with both movie almost being at 90 minutes, a “missing” 20 minutes is crazy…that would mean these “grindhouse” films were almost 2 hours long (if there were no missing reel)???

that would have been unheard of back in the day…

There were no missing reels in the old Grindhouse films. The Missing reel idea was created by Richard Linklater. At QTs film fest he showed a movie that he owned that was missing a reel. QT watched the film without the reel and it made the movie play differently because those 20 or so minutes had a major story twist. QT liked to watch it that way and then showed it in Austin. Richard Linklater saw it and told Robert Rodriguez he should put a “Missing Reel” clip in his Grindhouse film to create an audience reaction to it. Thats why both films have the Missing reel thing.

i doubt QT acctually shoots something important and then tosses the footage ;_)

it’ll be just a stylistic device… you’ll sit there and go “whoa”… but you wont miss anything essential i think

He won’t shoot a missing reel anyways, for throwoing away the material it’s definitely too expensive. The Weinsteins won’t like this idea very much

Itll definitely affect the story in some way, otherwise he wouldnt bother.

Pete, you banner is fucking great!!

Oh…I could see QT doing missing reels. But I don’t think he would leave anything important out.

…or would he?

I love that scene, its stuck in my head and I cant get it out …you really have to be sitting in my seat

You guys that read the whole script, did you come to a part that noted this missing reel?

Nope, the script did not mention any missing reels whatsoever.

yeah maybe it’s in rodriguez’ part though…

or it might just look like at some point the reel ripped and was glued together. everybody’s gonna turn around and start cursing at the projectionist. hell yeah

QT wouldnt put MISSING REEL in the script. Hes just gonna pick a spot for it. Remember, he said people would be screaming at the screen calling him a bastard when it happens.

I hope it’s not during Rosario Dawson’s strip scene.

I believe I read once that it was in Rodriguez’ part.

So he is going to just chop out a part he has already written. Question answered.

I doubt there will be a “missing reel” so to speak. Maybe a slight jump and pop but not a big hole in the plot caused by a big piece of the story missing.

We’ll see, I guess itll be a surprise. This whole missing reel thing is like the equivalent of the contents of the briefcase in Pulp and the Brides name in Kill Bill. Everyone will be asking what happened in the footage we didnt see and QT and RR will never tell us!!

true. that’s how I see it, too. I don’t think this is anything like a deleted scene or something…

Methinks the Ilsa trilogy will be re-released on DVD once these images appear on the big screen in theaters world-wide!

Haven’t checked out the scripts (Don’t wanna) but anyone know if there’s nudity in Death Proof?

not really. maybe a little, but no full nudity or anything as far as i can recall. but there are sexual references, there is sexual content (talk, dancing, kissing etc)…
