I was just on IMDB.com reading some of the shitty things that have been posted about Keanu Reeves, and I decided that rather than contribute to an inane, pointless debate with a bunch of morons, I would pose the same question here. Is Keanu overrated or underrated?
I’ve been a fan, more or less, of Keanu Reeves’ work for some time - if not of the man as an actor, then at least of his decisions. Whether or not you like him, he’s worked with some of the most creative and talented people in Hollywood and he has earned the respect and admiration of virtually everyone who has worked with him. Not to mention that he could have easily cashed in a long time ago and resorted to tripe like Speed 5: This Time With Electric Wheelchairs or Bill and Ted Jerk Off. Instead, he’s doing pretty bold stuff like taking small pay for supporting roles in indie flicks like Thumbsucker and using his name and bankability to breath life into other movies like A Scanner Darkly.
I’m not saying he’s Robert De Niro or anything. He doesn’t have earth shattering range, but within his range, he tends to do pretty fuckin well. I know I could never imagine Will Smith in Keanu Reeves’ place in the Matrix. When he’s right for the part (the most notable exception being Bram Stoker’s Dracula), I find myself actually enjoying his performances.
But then there are the people that harp on his Bill and Ted/Point Break persona that is really nothing more than a media fabrication and pound that into the ground. They say he’s an idiot and talentless and all of that.
So where do you stand?
I’m a fan of Keanu. I think he varies. Sometimes he can do a wonderful job with a role. Sometimes it’s like he’s somewhere else. Lately he’s been a better actor than in the past. Must come with age. He was very good in The Gift. A short roll where he played a wife beater. Lots of anger. He did a good job.
i’m not a fan at all, saw Devils Advocate again last night and it’s amazing how Pacino almost litteraly kills him in that film, acting-wise, he slays him, Keanu isn’t anything special, not at all, he Always has that mysterious look on his face, whatever he does
that’s it, i’m a fan of his films though, Devils Advocate, Dracula, Matrix, Speed … all very fine films, yet he never convinced me he’s a good actor

Well said, and Id have to agree. I dont hate him, but hes definitly not anything special. The closest ive come to hating him was just being annoyed with how much you seem to see of him these days.

I think that he is underrated. I don’t really understand why people doesn’t like him… I think that he is a pretty god actor and he has been in a few movies I like a lot.

He has good character…but he’s not a good actor I don’t think…not a bad actor either.

I think he´s bit underestimated. He´s surly not the best actor on earth, but he´s better than many others, who are said to be so wonderful and great. I don´t know why some hate him. But on the other hand I hate Brad Pitt and Leonardo DiCaprio… and I heard that they are soooo wonderful. Can´t get that. 
I think that Keanu can act quite good when he is given a good role. There are types he isn´t so good in, that´s all. But he can do better than f.e. Hugh Grant, who just can play Hugh Grant in a way.

Dicaprio was good in “whats eating gilbert grape.” and thats it. Nothing else that ive seen anyways. Ive liked Pitt since 7 years in Tibet, and especialy liked him after Fight Club. I dont think he has the depth alot of other actors do tho. I dont beleive him as much outside of certian roles. And i cant stand his voice for some reason. ???

Didn’t he get an Oscar for that? Well, yeah, he was good in that movie…
DiCaprio received a Golden Globe for Whats Eating Gilbert Grape, but I don’t think he has an Oscar yet. I don’t mind Brad Pitt or Leonardo DiCaprio, and there was even a time (pretty much right after Gilbert Grape) that I thought he might be on par with a young Marlon Brando. In fact, I don’t think even Brando could have pulled off Arnie as convincingly as DiCaprio did in that movie. However, he’s been a major disappointment since then.
