Hostel Part II (2007)

WTF!!! Hostel is the biggest example of stupid gore with no engaging plot!!! Whats the moral element in Hostel? Also Please reply to Scarface’s comment about the ending of the movie… No offense mate  just wanna see a discussion, in the end to each his own… Saying its the best movie in 2006 is too much… Have you watched Babel, Children of Men and Pan’s Labyrinth? All this talk about Hostel made me wanna watch it again to find out what the hell are you all talking about… BTW I loved The Devils Rejects it much better than Hostel in my books…

First of all no offence taken I love a bit of debate anyway… I think hostel has a few layers which some people may miss out on and appeals on a number of different levels.

  1. It deals with the way Americans treat other countries and how they are perceived in these countries. It has a few political connotations. The fact that the customers of the hunting company have to pay about €20,000 extra for an American shows just how disliked Americans are in the world (at least under the current Bush admin). Theres a sort of allegorical comment on how these young guys go off to foreign lands to exploit all that it has to offer and dont expect to pay a price themselves. It definitely has post-9/11 connotations…

  2. It had something to say about sex tourism and the treatment of women. As Roth states himself the women they meet are simply stories that they can tell to people back home. There is an ironic reflection in how the dudes visit a brothel to avail of all that is there and end up as a type of prostitute themselves. This is where the kind of the moral element kicks in. I’ve even heard it referred to as “Gore Noir” as it has the kind of elements that characterised the noirs of the 40’s. The 2 girls in the hostel form the typical “spider-women” of they tempt the films hero and lead him down a dark park towards destruction until he chooses to rescue the asian chick who embodies the only good or innocence in the film. It is the darkest of coming of age/ rights of passage stories.

I just found it to be really entertaining and very accurate. i have gone on back packing trips around europe (although I’m Irish) and of a similar age to the guys in the film and the little details that roth picks up on made me enjoy it all the more. Maybe you should go back and watch it with this in mind i think its a movie which fills a large gap in the current film landscape.

I have seen Babel and Pan’s Labyrinth and really enjoyed them both but they came out in 2007 in my country. Even though they are completely different films I thought they were of the same high standard (havent seen children of men) as hostel anyway. All pictures with balls and something to say, all of the 4 star standard and all baring the marks of amazing film-makers. The only thing films that came near Hostel in 2006 were The Departed (4.5/5), The Prestige (4/5) and the Squid and the Whale (4/5).

I did really dislike the devils rejects when i saw it but saw certain good things about it (esp. cinematography), I am going to rewatch it though and i hope you rewatch hostel! That was some rant… I welcome any comments!

Actually I thought it was based on the invasion of Iraq, particularly the beheadings… What happens to Americans when they stick their noses in other countries business… However when I told my friends they started laughing at me and said I look too deep into stuff… However as I can recall they killed people from various countries not only Americans, maybe other countries helpin the US in the Iraqi war, thats what I thought back then… Im glad we share the same point of view, When my friends laughed at me I completely knixed (bad spelling) the idea but now you restored my faith in it… However could you please reply to what Scarface said about the movies ending, thats exactly what I thought about the ending, you cant defend this one…

One of the coolest movie posters Ive seen in my life! Me you seem to be a fan of the movie Hostel, what would be your reply to what Scarface said? How would you defend the movie? I wanna try to look at it from your point of view… Btw I liked Cabin Fever… Really sad and disturbing emotionally. Eli Roth done his job well in Cabin Fever cause it f***s up your head… You dont know if you wanna cry or vomit… Hostel was a cooler more fun to watch movie but had no storyline what so ever and thats why I think Cabin Fever was better…

Well I kind of agree with scarface had to say. I think he’s right about how ironic it is he just happens to run into the girls on the streets but its a movie so you shouldnt take it so serious you know? and for the ending everybody wants a happy ending and thats what I think Roth gave us. The only thing that really disappointed me in Hostel was all the porn. Every movie that Eli Roth does is better than the last and I think Hostel II is gonna be great. At least you know when you go to see an Eli Roth movie that your gonna get what you paid for, an complete gorefest!

I think Eli Roth is one of the best film-makers out there today. [/quote]

Excellent joke.

Your wrong! Reservoir dogs ending not so happy… Happy endings are only for cliche hollywood movies and not everyone wants a happy ending… I find movies with sad endings to be much deeper and more real… Plus If were not to take the movie seriously then all the theories behind the moral theme of Hostel and what it truly stands for are bull, and so we go back to the same point we started from, the movie sucks… Id like to see blue reply to Scarface’s quote… He was starting to convince me its a good movie with his intelligent replies… Another thing, how could anyone be disappointed by sex in movies… If your a gore, violence fan then you must be a porn fan… What is exploitation without sex?

Yeah I like sad endings as well Bring me the head of alfredo garcia would have been stupid if he got away! Anyway either you like Hostel or you fucking hate it with a passion, I just happened to love it!

Some happy ending are great. One of my favorite happy endings is from Kill Bill. The bride has gotten her revenge by killing all 5 members of the Viper Squad and finds her child still alive and in her arms. Very touching.

I just thought he over did it thats all but that doesnt mean I dont love Hostel and I will be seeing Hostel II and III when they come out.

can people stop making sick and twisted movies and go back making movies that are scary without gore and sick fucking shit? thank you. not gonna watch this shit

I’m sorry, I’m still laughing from the whole “I think Eli Roth is one of the best film-makers out there today” comment.

Now I normally respect the fact that everyone has an opinion, and that its no more valid than my own.

But thats just fucking ridiculous

I think he meant one of the best new upcoming directors… Dont be so harsh…

Movies can only go so far with that… then horror will be spent for a while… if nothing goods made in the meantime :frowning:

i like the idea about the new film by the saw makers, it looks like a scary ass movie, without as much sick shit, at least not for the sick-shit-ness sake, but rather as a means to an end

I really am not a big fan of horror today.

Eli Roth is one of my most hated film makers working today. He just seems so cocky and all of his success has come to him on a silver platter despite never making a good movie. It pisses me off that the kids these days watch Hostel and talk about how scary it was and how great it was just because of gore. No one makes movies that actually scare you these days.

The Saw movies were ok but nothing special to me. They seemed to think they were scarier than they were…they had a fine concept but some lazy writing lost some of the intrigue into the jigsaw character. And the gore seemed to be there just to again appeal to the kids who think gore is all you need in a movie.

One of the funniest things I’ve ever read was Pajiba’s review of Hostel. I thought that was hilarious and really hit my problem with Roth on the head.

Check it out here

Anyway, I’m not really looking forward to Hostel 2. Especially since that nudity poster seemed again more like a grab for the teenage market, but oh well.

i really do wish Quentin would stop hanging around with Eli Roth, although as long as Quentin has a positive affect on Roth and Roth doesnt have a negative affect on Quentin I suppose its ok.

Yeah I agree with you… Im also against the Tarantino Roth bond… I also noticed that none of the horror movies today scare you, however Im a big fan of exploitation, sex, violence and gore in movies… Thats why Im a big fan of Asian extreme movies… When I watch American horror movies that are coming out today I actually dont expect do be scared, I watch them to get disgusted by the gore… Horror can either disgust you, disturb you or scare you… Asian horror is the best out there cuz it combines all three elements… The only horror movie that ever scared me is Belgian one called Calvaire: The Ordeal, you have to watch it… David Lynch movies even though they dont fall under the category of horror, they scare the shit outta me!

The best horror movies in my opinion came out in the 80s, you had-Nightmare on elm street,Friday the 13th,Maniac,Slumber Party Massacre,My Blood Valentine and so on. Horror will never be as good as it was in the 80s but Asian horror movies are pretty brutal.

I disagree with you on this point… I used to love Jason Vorhees and Freddy Krueger! My nickname on this website long time ago was Freddy Krueger… However when I grew up and became a more experienced cinema fan and learned to appreciate sophisticated movies, movies like Friday the 13th started to seem stupid to me! A Serial Killer kills a bunch of idiot cliche teenagers! Its always the same… The teenagers are never smart, theyre just put in the movie to die… Plus those movies are never scary cuz they can never happen to you in real life… Theres no superhuman seriall killer like Jason… However theyre fun to watch, but Asian extreme horror kicks ass! Its deep and it makes you think!

Has any movie really scared you? I mean when your little they scare the living shit out of you. At the moment I cant think of any movie that really scared me
