Not sure if these are in the right order as far as my liking the, but 5 scenes I really liked were:
being burried alive. When it goes pitch black and all you year is the dirt being piled on… very heart-pumping.
I like the Hattori Hanzo scene… Sonny Chiba is just so funny and lovable.
The Pai Mei training is just really fun. I love the way it goes into a Kung-Fu style directing, with all the obnoxious camera zooms and scratch film… brilliant
And I love the Elle and Beatrix fight. I love when Elle is jumping kicking and it shows the shot of Beatrix just staring, like in a daze as she’s flying towards her. And I love when beatrix gets kicked to the ground and she’s like sitting there in a pain, but then she realizes that there’s no time for that and she notices Budd’s sword, grabs it and reads “To my brother budd, the only man I ever loved - Bill” That delivery is just great and it really just eases the tension.
And I think this is my favorite scene, simply because it’s the most powerful scene. The opening scene… the bride is bloody as hell, she’s breathing hard, and all you see is Bill’s hand wiping blood off her while he’s talking about sadism. I still cringe when I hear the gun being pulled out and cocked and you just see Uma’s face shaking, being slightly more exposed than before…“Bill, it’s your bab–” BOOM! Ugh, it’s disturbing. I LOVE IT!!!
well i guess since chapters and scenes are intermingled in here, i’ll just thrown down some stuff i liked.
showdown at the house of blue leaves. particularly the entire calling out o-ren and chopping off sofies arm to the tune of “death rides a horse”. that’s the kind of stuff that makes you want to hump the movie seat in front of you. i also enjoyed the entire sequence where they introduced go-go, sofie, and johnny mo.
the massacre at two pines. this entire chapter of volume 2 made me feel about as equally indescribable upon seeing it as the house of blue leaves did. it was truly the first moment of the entire movie that you got to learn about the relationship between bill and beatrix… this is why i loved it so much. it made you feel. when the deadly vipers coldly walked into that church and started firing, and the horrified scream of the bride said “NOOOO BIIILLL”… ooh wow, i got the feelgoods.
the lonely grave of paula schultz. the way the buried alive scene was shot was great.
the cruel tutelage of pai mei. i think that’s what it was called, i have honestly only seen volume 2 once so far. the whole sequence with pai mei was what brought this movie closer to its roots. i loved it.
the origin of o-ren. the well-recieved anime sequence. enough said.
5) The whole exchange of dialogue between the Bride and Estaban. Absolutely delicious!
4) The Lonely Grave of Paula Schultz. Both times that I saw that part I wanted a cigarette, because it was so damn intense and satisfying.
3) O-Ren VS The Bride. “You may not be able to fight like a samurai, but at least you can die like a samurai…” I actually started to salivate after hearing those creamy words.
2) Uma’s Limb Revival. Hypnotic and trip inducing.
The MAN from Okinawa. To me it was this role that made Sonny Chiba a legend among legends.
Now, out of the other five, they go in order from best to worst (this is all relative by the way, i love all the chapters!)
Massacre at Two Pines
The Lonely Grave of Paula Schultz
The Man from Okinawa
2
The Blood-splattered Bride
Who else reckons that Tarantino should have left in Bill vs. Alburt and L.F O’Boyle, and made room for it by trimming Esteban and Larry Gomez (Budd’s Boss) parts? I mean, even the burial sequence goes for a little long. I just feel there were too many moments of pausing and dead time to justify leaving them in and cutting out Alburt vs. Bill…hopefully the fully-edited together version will restore it?
