@1: what do you mean “better”? it`s the exact same scene. or was the US cut of the scene different?
@2: let´s not judge from a crappy you tube vid. seems though it looks just like in the theatre.
That crash doesnt look like the one I saw in the theater here. Maybe its the exact same thing but it doesnt seem like it. The shot of JJs leg coming off looks different and you can see one of the girls skidding across the ground too at the end. Its not how I recall it. It seems a little longer or something.
The DVD obviously makes the film look sharper and clearer. Thats the best quality YouTube vid Ive seen of the film because all the others were recorded in a theater. Whats wrong with that?

anyway, i doubt the cut on it will be any different from the eu-cut. i´d be surprised.

But it have to be different! Because the version not only tells that its “Extended” but also “Unrated”!
Just remind that both movies needed slight cuts for R-Rating! (source)
Or is the European Version already containing the fully Unrated Cut?
However, I would like to know also if the up-coming DVD will contain English Subtitles?!
I found this Picture of the DVD-Cover back-side, but I can hardly read everything.
To me, it looks like that it says: “Subtitles: Spanish, English (CC)”
And if I read it correct, they also falsely indicated Spanish audio so they had to put the sticker on it which says “Spanish Subtitles only. No Spanish Audio”
So my Question: Does it mean there are really ONLY spanish subtitles on it or ONLY spanish (AND english) subtitles BUT NO spanish audio.
Crazy: It IS the DVD, thats why it says Death Proof DVD next to it. You can tell its nice and clear and condensed like DVDs usually are.
Mr Brown: Well if its the US Region 1 DVD it will def have English subtitles. We usually get: English/Spanish subtitles on ours. Im not sure about the Spanish Audio.

Can anyone who has seen the European cut answer a simple question for me? In the convenience store scene, does Kim come out and say “I have to take a piss” with Abernathy responding “That’s a little too much information”? IMDB lists this in the trivia section (as an obvious Pulp Fiction reference) specifying that its only in the European cut. That part is not on the US DVD. After Kim gets her coffee she pretty much vanishes for the rest of scene. I realize that IMDB has user submitted information and this could just be a case of someone reading the screenplay and making false assumptions but you never know. All the other changes I noticed are consistent with everything else I’ve read about the Cannes/Euro cut.

Thanks for your answer. It is the RC1 DVD.
I own a few US DVD’s but some of them (I spit on your Grave, Re-Animator ME, Highlander IE) do NOT contain english subtitles.
But I think in this case these DVD’s are exceptional cases.
I’m sorry: Whats the question it particular?
But, however, everything you wrote (and what imdb says): I saw it in the Eurpean Cut.
By the way: What do you mean with: “It’s not on the US DVD”? Do you own the DVD already?

just because it sais “extended and unrated” doesn’t mean anytying, it just means it longer than the US (!!!) theatrical cut and that it has not been rated. that’s all.
but of course it could be that it’s different from the european (or one of the european) versions…

No, but some people do and naturally that means theres already a rip of the DVD on the internet (the ‘Death Proof ending’ thread has some pics of it). Since I’ve been anxious to see the full cut I snagged it but its perfect quality and definitely legit. Like most people, I won’t actually own it until Sept. 18th. Of course, I’ll have to figure out if I want the Best Buy steelbook or the normal packaging. I think I like the regular package better but the steelbook comes with some bonus third disc so I’ll likely get that. Either way, if you recall that part from the European cut then there are now at least 3 or 4 different versions of the movie.
You’re right.
But they shouldn’t named this version “Extended and Unrated” if they are planning to release the real unrated version (by inserting the R-Rating cuts) later.
How are they going to name, in this case, the version? “The real Extended and Unrated Version”?

I also would be happy if we could eliminate this rumor:
Some pages mention “a bonus not containing on the regular DVD” and other “a third bonus disc”!
Does anybody in particular knows whether it is a bonus feature or a whole bonus disc?
Both releases will be two-disc special editions. Best Buy will also release exclusive steelbook copies of Death Proof and Planet Terror, each containing a bonus disc.

“Unrated” is just a cheap marketing gimmick now. Back in the day it generally meant that the movie was a version with more gore that had to be cut to achieve an R rating. Now they slap “Unrated” or “Unrated Directors Cut” on every DVD they can just to sell more copies. As long as the version of the movie has ANY footage added, they can and have to state on the box that it’s unrated. Nothing I saw in the “extended and unrated” cut of Death Proof would warrant an NC-17 rating (since all the violence is identical to the Grindhouse version). If they did submit it to the MPAA it would still be rated R but then they would lose the gimmick of slapping “unrated” on the box to sell more copies. I’d personally prefer it to say “extended international version” or something along those lines. That’s how Leon: The Professional is. It is technically unrated but it doesn’t try and act like theres some extra shocking footage in there that had to be cut for violence or sex.

Presumably because the European Version only contains the extended scenes but no further violence which already were cut out of the US version to obtain an R-Rating.
And the point is that these cuts have to be re-insert in the movie, in my opinion!
Mr. Brown, I honestly don’t think anything was cut out of Death Proof to achieve an R rating. Around the time or release I heard that some of the trailers and possibly Planet Terror needed a few trims. However, Rodriguez said instead of cutting things out that they would just cover up the nasty bits with film scratches or defects. This is absolutely true for the Thanksgiving trailer:
THANKSGIVING TRAILER SPOILER
The part where the cheerleader does a split has her vagina covered up with scuff marks on the film.
End THANKSGIVING TRAILER SPOILER
Death Proof has no nudity and very little blood besides the crash scene and the “final blow” shot (which clearly isn’t cut). The editing in the crash scene is consistent and we clearly see what happens to everyone including Julia’s leg bouncing on the pavement and Arlene getting her face smashed by the tire. If you live in Europe you likely haven’t seen Planet Terror or all the fake trailers (unless you downloaded the bootlegs or whatever) but I can assure you that Death Proof is very tame compared to some of the stuff Planet Terror and Thanksgiving got away with.
it is extended, as in it is longer than the US theatrical cut, and it is unrated, as in the theatrical cut was rated R, but the extended one isn’t rated by the MPAA. very simple.
if there are in fact differences between some european versions and this extended dvd version, then we’ll find that out as soon as people are able to actually do shot by shot comparisons, which won’t be until all versions in all countries are out on DVD…
and yes, i am one of those who suspect that the versions might be different, but at this point, it’s all pure speculation (for example I thought the version I saw in switzerland was mildly censored violence-wise)
