Controversial opinions about movies

The idea of the thread is to share your views about movies which may be deemed controversial by either the majority of people or film critics be it on this forum or anywhere else. For example:

  • George Lucas is overrated and his Star Wars/Indiana Jones films are boring and overrated as well.

You get the idea. Not just to make whatever controversial opinion but to post ones you actually hold.

    Post away

Lucas only co-wrote Raiders of the Lost Ark, and had very little to do with the writing of the others. And how is he overrated? I love Star Wars as much as, or more than I love Pulp Fiction, for different reasons, obviously. But, love him or hate him, his work is an extremely important element of cinematic history.

  • Peter Jackson is overrated. He adapted LotR, and had an unlimited budget to make it look good.

It’s been years since I’ve seen the original trilogy but I always hated the Star Wars movies. Even when I was young and everybody was really into them I tried my hardest to be one of the cool kids and jump on that big ass band wagon but I just couldn’t do it. They always came across as cheesy and hokey to me. But then again, when all my friends were watching Star Wars I was at home taping Van Damme movies off late night cable.

I think the second trilogy could have been great if they hadn’t tried to stretch Anikan going darkside into three movies.

I kind of agree on Peter Jackson too. He’s a competent enough director but I’ve never really seen any of his original films, just the remakes and adaptations, which seems to be all he does.

I don’t really mind if anyone else hates Star Wars or not… I just can’t understand how.

Maybe being born in the 70’s, and seeing the Empire Strikes Back and Return of the Jedi on the big screen has something to do with it. I was absolutely obsessed with it as a child, and it wasn’t a bandwagon I was jumping on, because I didn’t even know any other kids when I was that young. The original trilogy always has been, and always will be, the biggest and most awesome movies in the world to me. They’re as much a part of me as any other life-shaping events one experiences growing up.

It’s all relative, I reckon.

I wonder how many of today’s impressionable youth felt the same way when they saw Harry Potter for the first time.

Not my kid. ;D She’s honestly most influenced by Spaghetti Westerns and Princesses. She wants to be a cowgirl when she grows up.

Granted, not denying his technical/conceptual contribution to cinema, I don’t see his movies as a whole to warrant all the praise they get. Never found the story or characters interesting.

Now for more controversy:

  • Titanic is the best film Cameron has directed.

  • Tom Hanks, Nicholas Cage and Christian Bale are all dull actors who play the same role (i.e. themselves) over and over.

Say what you will, but I still like all 3 of them. Bale needs to have a villian role badly.

Tim Burton is overrated

That’s not controversial, he really is. ;D
Tim Burton is overrated
Yeah, but in his defense, he’s just so far up his own arse that he can’t help it. >:D

edit:

Megan Fox is a stuck-up bitch of a moron.

I agree with Hanks and Cage (Cage’s biggest leap was probly Con-Air) but Bale’s pretty versatile. Batman, Reign of Fire, Harsh Times, The Prestige, The Machinist, and Rescue Dawn all required very different roles. And the guy very rarely uses the same accent twice. Most actors that are considered great can’t pull off one accent that’s not their own.

And yeah, Burton blows. Your world view is warped and creepy, we get it, move along.

Hmmm, he is indeed! I do like several of his movies, the main reason may be because I love Johnny Depp and he is in a great number of them. But I find his movies, even if fun while watching them, rather forgettable. Edwards Scissorhands may be the only exception.

I don’t see what’s so “great” about her, definitely overrated and not hot at all. And of course, she can’t act her way out of a paper bag.

It’s cool to have a new girl around here!

Megan Fox is extremely attractive. I don’t get all the hate. Sure, she’s not a great actress but she still hasn’t really had a well written role yet. It’s not like she’s stealing Oscar caliber roles that should have gone to someone else. I actually thought she showed some potential in “Transformers 2” but it looks like “Passion Play” will be her first chance to really act.

I think most of the hate comes from chicks who aren’t half as attractive and people who focus way too much on who the actors are off the set.

Is she that hateable off the set?

LOL! I’m not half as attractive as many actresses. I don’t care what they look like, the chicks that is, I only care that they aren’t two-faced, backstabbing idiots. And she is. She’s seriously the dumbest chick in hollywood today.
Is she that hateable off the set?
Yes. None of the crew members she’s worked with can stand her.

She just says a lot of dumb stuff in interviews and the gossip blogs tend to blow it way out of proportion. There was a big deal not too long ago where she said Michael Bay was sort of a Hitler type dictator on the set but a really sweet/shy guy off the set. The media came out with headlines like “Megan Fox bashes Michael Bay”. Then she made a small comment about how dangerous the stunts were on Transformers 2 and the headlines were “Megan Fox hated working on Transformers” but Shia Lebouf said the same thing on the first films DVD and they painted him out to be some kind of hero.

I think that’s where a lot of the hate comes from. The media backlash. Cause her movies so far are such mindless fluff they really don’t warrant an emotional reaction of any kind. I think she’s just a young girl who doesn’t fully realize yet that everything she says and does is going to be picked apart under a microscope.

Personally, I tend to set that trivial stuff to the side when I pop in a movie.

Well, I can totally understand your thinking. However, have you ever watched her in interviews? She’s lost without rehearsal. People always forgive her cos she’s super attractive… I won’t take that away from her… But that’s all she’s got going for her. She has no personality, and no intelligence.

Heh, thanks but I am not female
