You’re not doing much of a job.
Why don’t you just apologise for highlighting people’s mistakes, and I’ll stop calling you out on yours?
I also always thought that the film could sort of be a metaphor for Hollywood. How filmmakers like Scorsese had all this power in the 70’s and could make films however they wanted, but today it “looks like Disneyland” with all the tentpole pictures being released. And the ending with Ace could be about Scorsese’s place in Hollywood today. He survived because he “could still pick winners and make money.”
This is actually correct. It’s not a big metaphor for it, as it’s Nic Pileggi’s script (and a true story to begin with), but Scorsese said himself that it could indeed be seen as a metaphor for Hollywood with all the things you said. Check out the Casino Making Of for proof. Very well observed by the way!
I prefer Casino, but I’ve only watched Goodfellas once (yes I know, but I’m still young).
Nicky’s demise was the second most voted movie death in a poll made by Total Film too. Here’s what it says:
"Disturbing, this. Nicky Santoro’s (Joe Pesci) a violent little shit, but you still can’t help feeling for him as a gang of club-wielding goons batter his brother to death before his eyes, then thrash him to a pulp and dump them both in a shallow grave. And Scorsese’s camera doesn’t flinch away once. Shudder.
YOU SAID: "Nasty Nicky gets a deserved kicking, then Robert De Niro informs us that he was buried alive. Pure class."

Pulp Fiction was #1.

I liked Goodfellas cos it made me laugh. Casino was pretty good, but I didn’t like the colours they chose for it. Made it feel cheap.
But Las Vegas is cheap, baby ;D I don’t have sharp memories about the colors but I do remember Casino being maybe the first film where I really paid attention to lighting. Good stuff.
I loved the cinematography in Casino. When I first watched it years ago, I was very impressed with the visual style, the lighting and stuff. I don’t think it looks cheap at all. Later I realised it was Robert Richardson, what a genius.
I always thought that the visual aspects of the film were meant to be reflective of the time and place. yes it was cheap and trashy but old vegas was cheap and trashy. The Casino set lighting everything seemed to me like walking into one of the old vintage casinos like the Tropicana. It helped me get into the movie more. You felt like you were in 70s vegas watching Casino…
Goodfellas by a mile. Casino, which was a very good film seemed to tread the same waters as Goodfellas. I think what I prefered about Goodfellas was that we didn’t just get the glorified view of gangster life by the gangsters themselves, we got it from a strong and independant minded woman who recognized the dangers accosiated with the life, while in Casino we were showed their world by the people living it. It wasnt very objective, not to mention that I hated De Niros character in Casino. And like I`ve been saying for years now about Scorsese, Goodfellas is the type of film the will be watchable twenty years from now, I doubt Casino will.
I love both of them. Goodfellas is a probably a better movie but if either of them are on tv I will sit down and watch either of them to the end even though I know what happens and I’ve already seen both of them a dozen times at least. Not his greatest films certainly but they are among the most enjoyable to watch…
hard to understand for me. Goodfellas is a nice mafia story, but Casino’s got this intensity, this beat, this grab-you-and-dont-let-you-go attitude, it’s just great
I prefer Casino. I will never tire of watching that, but with Goodfellas, whenever someone asks me if I want to watch it now, I flinch a little. Don’t get me wrong, Goodfellas is a great film, and because it came before Casino, you have to give it props no matter what. However, I feel Casino is more accomplished. I know Goodfellas was purposefully unconventional and experimental (mistakes everywhere, haha), but the messiness of it all doesn’t appeal to me. I like the perfective Casino, where everything is nice and clean (with help from R. Richardson)… even the violence isn’t as dity which by no means takes away from its emotional intensity. Casino for me also has the more brilliant stand-out scenes. Also, for as great as the performances in Goodfellas are, Pesci in Casino is fucking CLASS!! He has, nor ever will be as great, ever. It’s a weird thing because they are so similar, but Goodfellas is about the streets and Casino is more epic - grandeur!

It’s funny you talked about Goodfellas feeling messy, I always felt that way about Casino for some reason. Even though I love Bob Richardson’s work, I felt Goodfellas was far tighter. I also think Liotta’s performance in Goodfellas is far superior to DeNiro’s in Casino.
I didn’t like De Niro in Casino either, but it’s his character I didn’t like, not his acting. I think he got his character just right! Liotta was great, yes. Lorraine Bracco’s voice is annoying. The Young Henry Hill was annoying too… and he runs like a girl ;D. As a whole, I feel Casino is a superior film.
goodfellas is the story of one character; a classic rise and fall story. casino is bigger and much more ambitious. it’s the story of a city! the ressemblance between both films is superficial. having say that, i couldn’t tell which one i prefer. I’ve seen Goodfellas 20 times and i’m still amazed by it’s energy… and casino gets better and better each time i watch it too. it’s an amazing achievement, this is Lawrence of Arabia of gangster films 8) the film was misunderstood when it came out, everyone saw it as a repetition of the Goodfellas… but as years go by, more and more people seem to rewatch it and realise it’s a masterpiece… which is great!
Goodfellas hands down. Now they are very, very close and are both epic masterpieces, but Goodfellas is the clear winner in my eyes (if that makes sense)
There is absolutely nothing I don’t like about Goodfellas, each time I watch (and it must be over 20 times now) I notice something new. I can watch it three times in one week and focus on some other detail that I hadn’t before. The attention to detail is sublime. And the Billy Batts beat down is my favourite scene in cinematic history. 8)
Now, Casino is not far behind, but I feel it plays on GoodFellas’ coat-tails somehwat. It uses a lot of the same storytelling gimmicks which make me cringe a bit to know that’s what he’s doing. Some of the voice over sounds corny, especially Pesci, and there’s just a bit too much of it here IMO.
Saying that, I absolutely adore Casino too. It’s just like more of Goddfellas in Las Vegas…and who wouldn’t want that? But that’s why Goodfellas is the clear winner for me. It’s the original masterpiece and I also think it’s more focused and cohesive than Casino.
