Best CRIME Films

What are the best crime films ever made, in your opinion? I was wondering what they are, besides some of QT’s films…Are there any that are better? I’m thinking no, but you never know.

The Godfather, man. And Goodfellas. Kick-ass crime films.

Well, I know those two :P Goodfellas> The Godfather IMO. But I was wondering but any others, maybe not as well known as those 8)

I’ve probably done a list like this about 100 times since Ive been online: White Heat, Angels With Dirty Faces, Scarface (Hawks), The Killing, Detour, Kiss Me Deadly, Al Capone, St Valentines Day Massacre, Touch of Evil, The Killers (64), Le Cercle Rouge, The Sting, Charley Varrick, The Outfit, The Godfather Trilogy, The Getaway (72), Chinatown, Straight Time, Scarface (DePalma), The Untouchables, Carlito’s Way, Goodfellas, Casino, Donnie Brasco, Blow, Truth or Consequences NM, Hoodlum, Thunderbolt and Lightfoot, The Score, The Hot Rock…many more.

I know I’m missing alot but these are some just off the top of my head.

The Usual Suspects is great too, and obviously A Clockwork Orange. Fargo and Dog Day are excellent as well. Se7en, anyone?

Thanks for the list - I’ve seen a few of them.

I’ve been trying to find the Killers but it looks like I’ll have to buy it.

Se7en & The Usual Suspects are very good 8)

Goodfellas is my number one of ALL time movie wise…

I also love anything melville made: besides le cercle rouge, I love Le Samouraï with a passion…

Uhm also Little Caesar is pretty cool  Roaring twenties and public enemy come to mind…

Winslow basically named the best stuff :stuck_out_tongue:

Also don’t sleep on great crime flicks from other coutries, especially Italy and Japan. Good places to start include the Italian crime films Violent City (with Charles Bronson) and Revolver; and the Japanese Yakuza Papers series as well as the films of Seijun Suzuki (Criterion has released his Branded to Kill, Tokyo Drifter, and Youth of the Beast on dvd).

Of course there are also a lot of great French crime/gangster/heist/noir films like the already mentioned works of Jean-Pierre Melville - also look into Jules Dassin.

Hey winslow, have you ever seen The Nickel Ride? I just posted a review of it here:

I’ll check it out.

Ah! Things to do in denver when you are dead! So cool! Garcia is so slick in this! Love it! ALso coolest hitman award for Buscemi in this :stuck_out_tongue:

I dont know about some of those movies on imdb listed as “crime” though…

And don’t forget the Brits - has anyone mentioned Get Carter (the origianal, with Michael Caine) or The Long Good Friday?

And, swinging back to the states, don’t miss out on Lee Marvin - The Big Heat, Point Blank, Prime Cut,…

Yeah, some of them don’t belong there.

Those IMDb genre lists aren’t very useful. It seems like anything that’s got a criminal or a cop of any kind in it is automatically listed as a crime film, even superhero movies.

The suggestions on this thread will keep ya busy, don’t worry about that IMDb list.

Don’t forget Guy Ritchie’s Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels and Snatch. Such awesome films, not only they’re filled with some of the best and darkest film humour ever, they have pretty complicated plots and wonderfully worked out characters. Plus the exact rainy, grey atmosphere of London I so adore, rarely found in other works.

True! Le Samouraï, just as I saw it, topped my top 10 instantly. I am currently even wearing my watch like Alain Delon in the movie, haha. Can’t wait to see Le Cercle Rouge.

I havent actually, but Ive heard the name come up over the years. Hopefully theyll put it out on DVD sometime!

I love the Italian crime films of Fernando Di Leo (Milano Caliber 9, Il Boss, Mr Scarface etc). They’re very violent and great character pieces. They influenced QTs own films alot btw.

A few other Italian polizioteschi I really like: Live Like A Cop, Die Like A Man, Colt 38 Squad, Emergency Squad.

Some other classic crime flix I dont think have been listed yet: Once Upon A Time In America (a true masterpiece), Millers Crossing, Double Indemnity, Hickey and Boggs.

Some great titles listed by everyone. Those should keep ya going for awhile!
