I said it when the film won and I still believe it. The Departed is a great film. It isn’t one of his greatest, but as Ify has already touched on - The Departed’s competition was the other films nominated that year (NOT Scorsese’s oeuvre). People of all ages enjoyed The Departed. It had a wide audience demographic, and I don’t believe for a second that it was either a nod to his career or a pity Oscar.
It’s definitely one of his greatest films. IMO of course. A lot of people… and I mean a lot of people haven’t seen all his films anyway. He’s probably my biggest influence as a filmmaker so I’ve got a pretty good handle on his work. If you look back at Raging Bull and Taxi Driver which are classics now, weren’t as universally praised when they came out. But now they’re the be-all-end-all and I think that is Scorsese\s greatest quality, along with QT his films get better over time, they age well unlike a lot of filmmakers who’s films lose they’re luster(danny boyle, watch Slumdog is ten years and u’ll see) The Departed winning the oscar is great but it shouldn’t be a big deal because all those fiilms that he lost to… where are they now?

Nobody surprised that Two Lovers by Kames Gray has no nominations ? I thought Joaquin Phoenix would have been nominated at least.

I’m starting to hate James Gray. Everything he does seems like an unabashed rip-off of something else. Haven’t seen two lovers yet, how is it?

taxi driver was a big success and it won the Palme D’or in Cannes… some people might have hated it, still the film had a huge following… in france it was considered an instant classic…
same thing with Raging Bull, De Niro won an oscar… i’ve just read an interview Scorsese gave when the King of Comedy was released were he said - i’m paraphrasing - “with Raging Bull i achieved my goal as a filmmaker, now i’m not obsessed about being the best director in the world anymore”

i couldn’t agree more
but regarding James Gray: which films did he rip-off? in the yards for instance?
Critical success and success are very different things. As for James Gray I dunno. Whenever I watch his films I feel like I’ve seen them before. The most obvious one is We Own The Night, It just seemed like a blatant attempt to recreate the success of the departed. Watch the trailers for both and you’ll see what I mean. As for The Yards The Godfather trilogy played way to big a role in that film. Maybe I’m just biased because I don’t like his style very much.

As Joaquin Phoenix has not been nominated for Two Lovers then maybe the Academy should invite him to perform as a rapper. Now that would be entertaining!

I loved it. But I was already convinced by James gray with Little Odessa, The Yards and We Own the Night. If you don’t like his previous movies, I’m not sure you’ll be now convinced by Two Lovers. Same themes, same actor, same classic directing. Love it.
Rourke not winning is bullshit. Sean Penn was good but his political shit is getting to me. Rourke deserved it more.
Very predictable, boring show all around. I’m happy for Kate Winslet (even though I would of been happier for Meryl Streep) and Penelope Cruz but that’s about it. Slumdog Millionaire is overrated officially.
I don’t care the results and the ceremony, and I haven’t seen (Penn or Rourke)'s performances, so I don’t really know who deserves the price, but I’m happy for Sean Penn. He’s one of the few Hollywood well-known figures I care. Great actor, great director, I appreciate his courage, his political views, his will, a lot of things he does and thinks.
The show was pretty good, and for once it seemed to be less long, more rythm. Loved it. Though of course, as been said, it was a bit predictable cause Slumdog got everything. I was in the end a bit disappointed for Benjamin Button (even if I didn’t like the movie that much) cause they were even stolen some of the technical prices they should have got.
The best thing from this ceremony was obvioulsy Kate Winslet !! I can’t believe it, it was so emotional. She so deserves it. About Mickey Rourke, I was shocked that he didn’t get it, even if Sean Penn deserves it too apparently for his performance in Milk (it’s released in France yet, can’t judge). Now that I think about it, it doesn’t surprise me that much anymore, cause Mickey Rourke has been hated for so long, that the Academy can’t admit now he deserves a price… He got the Golden Globes and so much more prices, even from the Actor Guild, so in a way, he had his recognition already and the Academy don’t officially recognize they were wrong about him, so it seems pretty fair for both sides… But I’m still mad that he didn’t get it.
The academy doesn’t sit and deliberate. It’s a personal choice between hundreds of people so you can’t say, the academy decided this or that. Sean Penn’s performance no matter how good Rourke was, was the better performance. He completely and wholly left Sean Penn at the door and became Harvey Milk, definitely the more soulful performance. All the acting Oscar’s were right on the money. The other Awards pissed me off. Goddamn Slumdog Millionaire, worst best picture winner ever. Best Director? Have they not seen Ben Button, or Frost/Nixon, even the Reader for Christs sake? How in the hell did this get nominated over Che or Revolutionary Road or Doubt?
It was a joy to see Brad and Morticia walk away empty handed. The pair of them are so smug.
You might not enjoy their overmediatized relationship, though they’re both very good actors. You cannot deny it.
Meryl Streep was very class indeed. It was pretty cool to see her coming with her daughter. And Amy Adams was real pretty too. Too bad she didn’t get the award, even if I’m happy for Penelope Cruz.

Che wasn’t good. Not bad either, but not good. Not interesting. It’s juct facts, a stoy for kids who don’t know a single thing about Che Guevara. Only Benicio Del Toro was perfect in it. But he’s always an excellent actor. Except of that, the movie isn’t worthy. Slumdog is sure no masterpiece but it’s a really enjoyable movie to watch in theater, you cannot be bored. I wished they hadn’t won that much awards in the same night, so it’s great for them, for such a low-budget movie, such project, for all the actors in the movie.

C’mon. I know that. Everybody does and how many times has it been said already on this topic ? Though sometimes hundred of people think the same without deliberating. Mickey Rourke has been hated by almost everybody in the business since 15 years or, why would they all of a sudden give him an oscar ? I think he could have got it, though now that I think about it, it’s not that surprising. At elast he got the Golden Globe and the Actor guild award, which is still a recognition from his peers.

Yes, I can deny it because I don’t believe either of them are good at what they do. And in a room filled with the likes of Meryl Streep, Sean Penn, Adrian Brody, Mickey Rourke… they look even worse.

That’s my opinion.

I’m almost a little insulted that you placed Adrien Brody and Mickey Rourke with Streep and Penn. And both Brad and Angelina are heavily reverred in the business. Like Hopkins said last night, Brad is a great character actor which is definitely why he’s in Inglourious Basterds. And Angelina has been and will continue to be one of the most raw and powerful actresses working today. They’re both very talented and very driven and both work very hard at their craft.
how can anyone find angelina jolie good at what she does?! take a look at her filmography, it’s ridiculous. the best film she’s ever done is girl interupted. WTF?

And Anthony Hopkins wasn’t reading from a script was he…
What you have just said, is totally alien to me. Angelina is the worst kind of actress, an actress totally aware of the camera being on her, who can’t let go and lose herself in a character without overdoing it. She’s a ham and let’s face it, she was only nominated because she was in a Clint Eastwood film.
Did you ever enjoy a single movie with them ? I prefer Brad Pitt who’s a great actor : never liked any of his movies ?
There is not one Angelina film I’ll sit through. She’s a selfish performer who could never be part of an ensemble cast. As for Brad… he can’t carry a movie alone. Do you think anyone would notice if someone else was cast in IB… mark my words, it wont be him that will blow people away but the true actors who don’t get the fanfare he gets.
I don’t like them together, I don’t like them individually. I don’t like their acting, I don’t like the way they conduct their personal lives. I just don’t like anything about them. It’s a personal preference, I’m not saying you should agree with it, but I am requesting that you respect it.
