i agree, the anal rape scene was funny and disturbing at the same time.
i thought zed was just a security guard, not a cop…
didn’t he play in the movie BLUE STREAK with Martin Lawerance?
I dont know about that, but Zed is “dorell?”; the bad guy in The Mask, wiv Jim Carey.
The problem with the whole hillbilly rapist sequence is that it comes out of nowhere.
In the other stories, the third act turning points - Mia’s OD and the restaraunt robbery - are carefully setup. When they happens, there’s a neat “aha” reaction. But when the rape scene happens, it’s more of a “what the?”.
There was no build up to Vincent shooting Marvin in the face and it was one of the best bits in the movie.

Thats not the problem, thats the beauty of it. (ugghh, did I just say a hillbilly rape scene was beautiful? I think I did! AHHHHH! ) Sometimes shit happens in real life thats like, BLAM, right in your face and you're forced to deal with it.
I mean what do you want the rapists to do to set up the scene? Hold his hand, kiss his ear, send him one of those funny cakes shaped like a penis with "cum on over" inscribed on it? I don't know. I heard Mr Wallice only likes to be fucked by Mrs Wallice so I don't know if any of those options would have hooked either (victim) into coming to the pawn shop for a little cockasydal maniac action.

But that’s not a major turn in the story, and it happens early.

Well, coincidences in life and coincidences in stories are different. For example, those quirks can work great in a documentary. In documentaries, characters can even have huge contradictions that, in fiction, would only turn the audience off. In this case, I think QT just didn’t have a good way to set up the existence of these hillybillies, and unfortunately they don’t resonate the way, say, The Wolf resonates when you first meet him. Maynard and Zed seem to pop up out of the blue.
Now, some of what happens is set up. Marsellus’s first monologue sets up the idea of “asses” ("…their ass would age like wine" ; “In the fifth, your ass goes down”; and so forth). And Jules says “Marsellus don’t like to be fucked by anybody except Mrs. Wallace”. And Captain Koonz further sets up the theme of things going up asses. But nothing prepares you for the appearance of the hillbilly rapists and their sublevel dungeon.
The sequence ends great, though, and I’m not arguing that. It’s a pleasant surprise when the strange interlude in the story ends with Butch and Marsellus working together, thereby ending their battle. But it would’ve been better if the rednecks could’ve been woven into the story better. IMO.

Not a major turn in the story? There is a good 45 minutes of the aftermath shown. But I get what you’re saying.
What I’m saying is that just about every story has to START with a series of coincidences. Usually they’re in the first act. But late, story-bending coincidences usually fail. All the pieces of the puzzle should be on the table by the end of act two, and, when they’re not, you get that odd sensation that the story is just being pulled out of the author’s ass.
Fair enough, whether the story was building up to the rape or whether it was a twist was probably a matter of interpretation. I did sort of get the feeling when watching it as “Oh, thats why the shop was so weird”, but I can see how that might not be considered much of a build up.
I think youre making a mountain out of a hillbilly.
I happen to love strange twists in movies unless youre a guy named Night Shamalamadingdong
The Sixth Sense was great…The Village, not so much.
Imagine what the story “The Gold Watch” would be like if there was no rape scene. I can’t fathom it any other way. Whenever I talk to people who’ve only seen Pulp once, they always bring up the rape scene. It’s what sticks with you. Like the wood chipper from Fargo.
Yeah I saw cuba Jr. on jay leno a couple of days ago and they were talking about him going camping and said something about deliverance.
That always comes up If your talking about camping.
Wait so you’re saying that when Butch and Marcellus have the red balls in there mouth and Zed and Maynard pull out the gimp is not a build up? To me that’s a pretty fucking big build up.
No, that’s not what I’m saying at all.
