considering the way grindhouse went in the box office do you guys think it was the right decision to split kill bill in two? i always kind of felt that if it had been released as one whole movie it wouldve gotten more plaudits from critics and awards etc, and wouldve been a more enjoyable experience, the ultimate tarantino epic… but having said that, do you think audiences wouldve been turned off by the run time?
don’t think so
If they released The Whole Bloody Affair now, I think it wouldn’t do too bad because people love Kill Bill and there is a definite audience. But if you are asking whether it would have bombed had it been released together in the first place… who knows? Most normal people don’t like long films. Plus, where I am a lot of people go out shopping and then decide to catch a film while they are there. Those kind of people don’t want to catch a four-hour film in the middle of the day.

ditto.
Maybe even a better movie? But I think it would have gotten a little less hype if it had not been split in two.
I think they would have. So man people I know are getting turned off Grindhouse just because of its running time.
Didn’t it kinda bomb at theaters anyway. It didn’t make 300 bucks or Matrix Revolution bucks, and both were mediocre.
I would have preferred it if they released the whole bloody affair first. I don’t think it would have bombed. At that point, everyone was craving a new Tarantino film. Also, the subject matter isn’t as ‘distasteful’ as that of Grindhouse. I don’t like how a lot of people seem to think Volume 2 is the sequel to Volume 1, and that they are seperate entities. I hope they release Kill Bill soon, so people realise it is one epic masterpiece. Kill Bill’s influence can still be seen in many aspects of entertainment today. That’s pretty impressive.
You know what they shouldve done? Released TWBA FIRST before Grindhouse to see how it did. If it did well, release Grindhouse as a double feature. If not, split em up. Makes sense dont it?

They both made about 40 million each, that isn’t bad.

More like 70 million each. And some of you must really learn what the term “bomb” means. Volume 1 alone amply recuperated the production cost of the whole two volumes, how the fuck could you say that it bombed?
Because it didn’t meet their expectations. We have a lot of movie producers residing here apparently.
do you think people might have walked out on vol 2 like some people have said has happened with death proof? coz its quite similar in format to grindhouse, with the action fuelled first half and the more reflective / talkative second
i dont think twba wouldve bombed personally and while i think it wouldve got more critical plaudits, and i was always annoyed at it being split, im kinda glad it was now. when KB2 had that big opening weekend tarantino said something about how it ensured he could be as creative as he wants now coz his box office backs him, hope that still holds true. im thinking people thought grindhouse consisted of two segments rather than two whole movies, though you know itll do great abroad and on dvd anyway

I meant in profit, Vol 1 made 70 mil and vol 2 made 66 mil.
yea thats true
Add them both together, since its really one movie, and you get a blockbuster of a movie. I do not think it would have hurt it to be released as one but I do not think it would have made as much money as the two films made apart. Just look at the DVD sales alone. QT cleaned house with Kill BIll and he will squeez even more blood from Bill in coming years. Wise choice, whoever made it.
