I keep reading and hearing about guilty pleasure movies. I don’t understand that concept. Why would anybody feel guilty for liking/loving a movie? Or even embarrassed? Do people really have such low self-confidence?
I love a lot of movies that are considered bad, but I hesitate to contribute to any “gulity pleasure favourites” list, because I don’t feel guilty or embarrassed about any of them.
Use this thread to contribute to the discussion or post your “guilty pleasure movie list”, ideally both.
My list of movies that I love where there seems to be a general consensus that they are “bad”:
The Apple
Smokey and the Bandit
The Sound of Music (It appears you’re not supposed to like it if you are male, heterosexual and between 16 and 30)
Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles
The Delta Force
Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles II: The Secret of the Ooze
BMX Bandits
The Wizard of Oz (cynics say this movie is not good…what??)
RoboCop (I’ve seen this title too on “guilty pleasure”-lists)
Lone Wolf McQuade
Puppet Master (Instantly bad of course because there are killing puppets :- people are idiots)
Willy Wonka & the Chocolate Factory
The Best Little Whorehouse in Texas
genre-wise, it appears that you aren’t supposed to love muscials, the german “Heimatfilme”, many B-and C-movies, and more generally all “outdated” movies that don’t fit the zeitgeist. And kids movies.

Call if a self confidence issue or what have you, but I wouldn’t go out of my way in real life to tell a chick how much I love the original Ninja Turtles trilogy or how I think Monster Squad is the most rad thing ever. Here on the internet though, I can be as geeky as I want to be 8)

Well TMNT III, I don’t think I’d go out of my way to tell anyone I love, but the original, hell yeah!!!
I guess TMNT II is what I’d refer to as a “guilty pleasure” since it’s ‘more for da kiddies’ but I still like it for sentimental resons… either way, we’re all geeks at heart if we’re on internet message boards, but not necessarily nerds… there’s a difference, haha. 8)

[/quote]Dude, I love Secret of the Ooze, my favorite of the three ;D “It’s really quiet… yeah, a little TOO quiet!.. hey look, it’s Raph!.. yeah, a little TOO Raph!” ;D
I love the third as well, definitely to a lesser degree but it’s still pretty awesome. Same thing for Back to the Future III and Ginger Snaps III, heading back to the past in the third film of a trilogy is always a bad thing.

haha Excellent. And scratch that about liking it, I love TMNT II, the fight sequences in that flick were beyond cool, and Ernie Reyes Jr. inspired me to fight like a ninja! Despise the third one though. The costumes were just… eugh!

I’m in love.
Unfortunately, I don’t consider those guilty pleasures… but Destiny Turns on the Radio. Hahaha. Big time.
That and Buffy, Angel, and Firefly… Anythin Joss Whedon does captures my soul.
I think guilty pleasures, at least for me, is just a phrase. I don’t feel guilty about watching silly movies now and then, but I still call them a guilty pleasure. I actually usually have movie nights to watch my favorite “bad” movies, because I think there is something genuinly entertaining about them that is even MORE entertaining with a room full of people to laugh with.
Usually if I want a mindless but entertaining movie, I either grab a kids movie, such as Ernest Saves Christmas (perfect for this time of the year!) or some movie with some sort of giant crocodile or something chomping on some family. Despite being a non-violent person, I love watching “scary” movies with killer animals.
The only people who should feel guilty about the movies they say they like, are the ones who don’t genuinely like them but say they do based on what they think other people want to here.

Haha. That’s a pretty cute movie though, so it’s not so bad. ;D
I forgot about my Hugh Grant movies. I don’t really like much about Hugh Grant in real life, but I love the movies he’s in, and I like to look at him.

I’d take Hugh Jackman over Hugh Grant anyday. Prrr…
It’s awful, because as much as I hate her, something about Lindsay Lohan movies … they just put me in a good mood.
I had one of the worst days of my life on Sunday, but I went to bed and watched the remake of The Parent Trap, and it kinda made everything better. I think it had more to do with the fact that it brought back great memories of being 12 years old and wanting to have a twin.
Other “Guilty Pleasures” -
The Sound of Music (Singing, a love story, escaping Nazis and goat puppets!!)
Father of The Bride Parts I & II
The Brady Bunch Movie
Kung Pow
The Power Rangers Movie
And all series of Degrassi Junior High & Degrassi High. ;D

I wouldn’t consider “Willy Wonka & The Chocolate Factory” a guilty pleasure! Its a classic and possibly the greatest kids movie of all time.

I love Willy Wonka but I think my guilty pleasure is that I like Charlie and the Chocolate Factory as well.
