Anyone here seen it, I know QT loves it and I was just wondering if it was good.
Does anyone know where to find DVD’s?
The first season will be released on R1 dvd later this year.
Seriously? Amazing. ;D
Yeah. I read Cliff MacMillan (who was previously working for Adness/Ventura releasing those remastered Sonny Chiba films) left the company. He’s now working for BCI Eclipse and they are developing a new dvd label called “Roning Entertainment”. Shadow Warriors will be their first release. They are also going to release Sister Street Fighter series uncut (the best news of the year, if you ask me).

“Los Angeles, CA – Martial arts icon Sonny Chiba has enjoyed a successful film career spanning 40 years, including his scene-stealing role in Kill Bill Vol.1. Now, BCI, a Navarre Corporation Company, has announced the DVD release of the samurai/ninja television series “Shadow Warriors: The Complete First Seasonâ€? starring Chiba. The seven disc set features all 27 episodes of the series and is available April 17th at a suggested retail price of $79.98. The announcement was made today by Cliff MacMillan, Director of Acquisitions, BCI.
“Sonny Chiba has proved his global status by successfully establishing a strong cult following worldwide said MacMillan. “We are excited to bring this long-awaited television series to DVD for the first time and are confident the appeal of Chiba will cross over many demographics.
In 1651 during the Edo Period, the 11 year old Ietsuna becomes the fourth Shogun, leading his influential chief retainers to plot against each other to take the reins of power. The Hattori family, a clan of Iga Ninjas who were former vassals and protectors of the previous Shogun, Tokugawa Ieyasu have since fallen from grace. Their third generation ancestor, Hattori Hanzo (Sonny Chiba) is now working as the master at public bathhouse in Edo City. Fearing further political upheaval and instability, the Shogun’s right hand man, Masayuki Hoshina once again calls upon the unique skills and services of Hattori Hanzo’s Ninja Clan. During the day, they masquerade as ordinary citizens, but at night they ride forth as the “Kage No Gundan, the secret “Shadow Army who opposes all those who dare to threaten the authority of the reigning Shogun.
The Shadow Warriors series featured an all-star cast of JAC “Japan Action Club (Chiba’s stunt school) alumni including Etsuko Shiomi (Sister Street Fighter), Hiroyuki Sanada (Rush Hour 3, Legend of the Eight Samurai) and Kenji Oba (Kill Bill Vol. 1).
Special features include:
• New interview with Sonny Chiba
• 12 page booklet on the series by Patrick Macias
• Dolby Digital Japanese 2.0
• English subtitles”

The Executioner 1&2 + The Killing Machine, right? Got the original releases. I was thinking about upgrading The Killing Machine to the Optimum release for the correct color scheme, but then again Optimum isn’t exactly a company I trust.
Yep those are the ones.
Ronin Ent. web site is finally functional:

1235 minutes of Chiba. Not a bad way to spend 45$ (or 72 if you want to use amazon)
To get the hype up, here’s a few scans of japanese Kage no gundan cms

Toei, yeah
I just received my copy of the Shadow Warriors box set. Im gonna start watching the series tonight. Ill let ya know how it looks/sounds etc tomorrow.
HATTORI HANZO TIIIIME! 8)
Oh damn, man. I’m so jealous. I just ordered this from pacific yesterday and I’m sure it won’t ship out until the 17th. Arghh.
Have fun watching it.
Pete how much did the boxset cost and what region is it? cause at the moment I dont own a Multi region player.
I got my copy free actually because I have a friend who works at Ronin Entertainment. I get free screeners now and then.
Its Region 1 so no problems.
I hate you! :embarassed:
it was 45$ at dvdpacific. It’s a few dollar cheaper at deepdiscountdvd but I’m a pacific fan so I got it from there.
I watched the first episode last night. It was really good. It was like a Sonny Chiba samurai movie but condensed down. One thing I liked about it was that it moved really fast. Sonny plays Hattori Hanzo (as you know), he runs a bathhouse, thats his Clark Kent lowdown persona, AND hes also the secret leader of a ninja clan where hes one of the deadliest ninja ever. By the end of the first episode hes back in full ninja mode. Hes basically a Japanese ninja version of Zorro. You guys will love it.
R1 Box Set review from a source I consider less than reliable: http://www.10kbullets.com/reviews/shadow-warriors
Toei’s website for their box set (that also comes with a soundtrack cd… and a ridiculous price): http://www.toei-video.co.jp/DVD/sp21/kagenogundan.html
There’s a 30 second commercial for the show.
Got my copy (pacific dispatched it more than two weeks early). Nice looking cardboard box set with four slim cases inside. Each slim case includes 2 discs (dual sided dvd-5’s, with two episodes per side) except the last one which includes one disc + a small booklet. The last disc also comes with a recent 16 minute Shinichi Chiba interview (in japanese, looks like it was recorded at the Toei studios just before their dvd release).
Picture quality isn’t that great but Toei is out of question thanks to their 40 000 yen price. It’s supposed to be â€
