Scorsese - Master of urban epics

Whoever said Gangs of New York was on par with Goodfellas needs to put two TV’s in their room and put both movies on at the same time and decide which one you want to watch. I bet you, you wouldnt look twice at GONY.

GONY would have worked better without Leonardo DiCraprio and Camerion Diaz in the roles. They are terrible actors. Enough said. Cameron’s only decent movie is when she is simply doing a voice for a cartoon character, despite the fact that she looks like Zippy from Rainbow.

Daniel Day Lewis was incredible, however.

Goodfellas on the other hand is one of the finest movies ever produced. Real actors, real storytelling and a fantastic soundtrack

i think we all know taxi driver is his best film and one of the best films ver, no argue about that

but Mean Streets is so fucking underrated, i watch this film almost once a day, harvey keitel and deniro have such an amazing chemistry, especially when harvey is talking sense into robert outside the bar, one of my fav scenes in movie history, its so pure

"joey clams was there, you know him?"

  • “yeah i know him”

    “yeah joey scala”
  • “yeah i know him too”

“no joey clams is joey scala”
  • “they are the same person”

    “yeah”
  • “heeeeeeey”

    “heeeeeey”

“i like the weintraub one, shes nice, really nice”
  • " who is she, the one on the right?"

    “your right or my right?”
  • “we’re both staring the same way”

I love Mean Streets. Mean Streets and The Last Temptation of Christ are the two most overlooked Scorsese masterpieces.

I love when Scorsese makes low budget films. If you look at his filmography, the quality of a Scorsese film decreases as the budget increases.

Look at New York, New York and Gangs of New York. They’re good, but not great. And The Aviator looks like it’s going to be the same way.

Now look at Mean Streets, Taxi Driver, Raging Bull, The Last Temptation of Christ and After Hours. All had comparatively low budgets but they’re his greatest films.

His moderately budgeted films have a 50/50 chance of being a great film. Example: Goodfellas and Casino are great. Cape Fear and Kundun are good but not great.

I don’t think Scorsese has ever made a bad film. But his best ones are usually the ones with lower budgets. I’m so glad he has said that after The Aviator he’s going back to lower budget filmmaking.

true, big budgets mostly ruin the essence of the film and makes you forget what the actual film is about when you’re making it because you got special effects to worry about, when youre making a low budget film its all about the actor and what hes talking about, not about how fabulous the background looks

Martin Scorsese is one of the best direcotrs the world has ever seen. He re- invented the gangster genre with the making of mean streets. I’ve seen Who’s that knocking at my door?, Mean Streets, Taxi Driver, Raging Bull, King of Comdey, Goodfellas, Casino, Bringing out the Dead and The last Temtation of Christ. All of these movies are epics

I don’t think Di Caprio is a bad actor. He’s been doing crap lately, all those romantic comedies and stuff… but if you’ve seen him in “Who loves Gilbert Grape?” you gotta agree he can act pretty well, to say the least.

Di Caprio’s a good actor, but he got that sweet angelic look going that doesn’t quite seem to fit with Marty’s gritty style of filmmaking. I can see him in something like “The Aviator”, but if Marty ever decides to re-visit the crime/gangster genre, Leo would most probably be seriously miscast. Gangs of New York is full proof.

I agree, Scarface

DiCaprio has NEVER been in a romantic comedy. He’s very careful in deciding what films to act in. He’s been in three good films in a row: Gangs of New York, Catch Me If You Can, and The Aviator. He’s building a great filmography. I used to hate him when he was on all those posters and teen magazines during the whole Titanic craze. He couldn’t be taken seriously then. But now I think he’s one of the best actor’s around.

And I said before that The Aviator looks like it’s going to be good but not great. I’d like to take that back. Now that I’m seeing more footage on tv, I’m getting pretty excited about it. It looks like it’s going to be a great film. Possibly one of Scorsese’s best.

The choice of actor can ruin a great picture. Leo and Cameron ruined Gangs of New York. Leo and Cat Blanchett (scandously playing the great Kate Kepburn) can easily ruin the Aviator.

Marty needs to give De Niro, Pesci, Sorvino a call.

I think you got it the other way around. De Niro and Pesci need to give Marty a call, because their careers (Pesci and Sorvino never really had more than a supporting-role career) are going down the toilet, or at least De Niro’s is. Meet the Fockers looks like shit, the past 5 movies he’s been in have been shit, and his new movie with that girl from I Am Sam looks worse than shit. Cameron Diaz is so-so, but I actually thought Leo did a pretty good job in Gangs. And while I enjoyed the first 2 hours of the film (the Leone-esque opening is definitely one of the coolest i’ve ever seen), it seemed to go astray during the last 45 minutes and lost direction…and my interest. Aviator doesn’t look like anything special imo, but i’m not a Scorsese fanboy or anything so I don’t really care one way or the other.

It’s right before the big fight in the beginning. When the gangs are meeting together face to face at the five points. Bill the Butcher’s introduction into the film is great. It starts with a close up of clean snow and then Bill walks into frame and digs his boots in the snow. Then there are three consecutive shots of Bill standing there. A long shot, a medium-closeup, and an extreme closeup of his eye. Then it’s back to an extreme long shot of his gang approaching the Irish gang.

Scorsese and DiCaprio Receive Highest French Honor:

Legendary director Martin Scorsese and actor Leonardo DiCaprio have been honored with France’s most prestigious cultural awards. Goodfellas filmmaker Scorsese was presented with the Legion of Honor at the annual ceremony in Paris on Wednesday. The title is in recognition of his contribution to cinema. DiCaprio, recently Scorsese’s collaborator on Gangs Of New York and The Aviator, was named Commander of the Order of the Arts and Letters. Presenting Scorsese’s honor, French culture minister Renaud Donnedieu De Vabres said, “Dear Martin Scorsese, the combat for the right of creators and cultural diversity brings together all of those who on both sides of the Atlantic and from all continents take it upon themselves to defend the expressions of identity and creation across all cultures.” An “extremely, extremely honored” DiCaprio was described by De Vabres as an “icon, little Hollywood prince, bad boy from Los Angeles, modern romantic hero, Peter Pan of American cinema”.

Everyone always gives Leonardo DiCaprio such a hard time, i think he’s a pretty damn good actor. The Aviator was great and Leo was great.

I agree. I think Leo’s the best actor of his generation.

He was great in ‘What’s eating Gilbert Grape?’ Scorsese obviously sees his talent.
