Anyone else watch OZ over its run or on DVD? its got great storylines, cool characters and lots of gore so obviously its not gonna be everyones taste buts its a great show you should check out
I don’t know why this show isn’t more appreciated. I mean, it does have a cult following and I know a lot of people who think it’s one of the best shows ever but still, is it because of the graphic violence or what? It may be one of the most violent shows ever but I would argue that it’s also one of the smartest tv dramas I’ve seen. But yeah, it’s definitely disturbing at times and even moreso depressing at other times. Also absolutely hilarious even if the humor is often pretty fucking dark.
And addictive as hell. Even when the plotlines were close to ridiculous (the huge amount of murders for starters) the unbelievably great ensemble cast and great dialogue sold it. Tom Fontana was a writer on every episode and he wrote over a half of them alone, talk about a good writer!
I’m actually doing a two-hour program for a local radio next week. It’s me and my friend hosting, we play punk rock and talk about nothing but Oz 8)
I used to watch it regularly on Showcase when it was still on. I liked it, it was one of he few dramas I actually made a point to try and see.

I know what you mean, here in AUS its basically unkwoen unless you watch SBS but other that that we only have the first 4 seasons released…
I watched it on SBS… back when i was in hi school… There was only one other person there i knew who watched it… but he watched alot of stuff that i wouldn’t touch… anyway i remember there being a REALLY unsettling scene in the shower where a guys throat is cut… Apparently the guy who played o’ryle stared in Hellraiser Hellseeker… havnt seen it though…
do you mean the part where Nikolai pretends to kiss this guy on the neck but has a blade hidden in his teeth?

Yes!! There are some pritty nasty/amusing parts… like Adebisi and O’Reilly feeding glass to that Italian boss and when Beecher bites that guys dick… but only that razor in his teeth made me cringe… just the way it was done…
i know what you mean, the only thing that made feel sick was the part in season 5 where the arayans (the guy who got his dick bitten of) and some other guy grab a muslim and they take a stanly knife and kut him in lots of different ways like straight down from the inner arm near the shoulder down to his wresit and the same on his chest
I stumbled upon this thread by randomly browsing the forum pages, it deserves more attention!
Oz is my favourite tv series, hands down. I haven’t seen any other serie that could compare to it: lots of awesome actors, great original idea, and very innovative and controversed at its time.
C’mon it’s a great show, who else watched/is still watching it ?
I LOVE OZ!! I started watching it the last couple years it was on HBO, so I had to rent the first few seasons and ened up just buying the whole series on DVD. It’s a great show. Great actors and story lines you certainly don’t see anywhere else. A few times it made me think I shouldn’t watch it alone. haha I know that sounds bad, but it’s actually a compliment. I think Dean Winters would be great in QT film. Love it!

Besides Oz, I’ve seen Dean Winters in Rescue me and Sex and the City. In Oz, he’s very good. In those other shows, he’s actually pretty bad. He keeps playing a variation of the same guy.
Oz is indeed full of amazing actors. It’s good to see JK Simmons getting a lot of work after Oz, he was one of the very best in the show. Funny, I’ve never heard QT mentioning Oz in any of his interviews, you’d imagine it would be right up his alley.
One of my all-time favorites, and the main reason why we have great subsequent dramas from HBO.
The Sopranos, The Wire, etc. I just think it’s sad that they seem to be focusing exclusively on
comedic shows for the foreseeable future.

Watch out for Martin Scorsese’s pilot
