So I just got done watching it, and although it’s not the best movie
I’ve ever seen it definitely is a great film. Typically when I watch an
old movie I end up hating it, mostly due to the hype that surrounds
it, but I don’t know, I guess because I’ve already seen/enjoyed so
many of his films I kind of went into it “knowing” I would like it.
The Good the Bad and the Ugly was probably the first film I ever watched, it certainly is the first film I remember watching. My dad used to watch it all the time, he had it on VHS. Westerns were the first films I saw, and to this day I can’t get enough of them. Obviously, at the time I watched GBU, I knew it was good, but I wasn’t anywhere near as old enough to really appreciate it.
Now however, I can’t help but to be awestruck at the opening scene. It’s my dream opening sequence. Whenever I used to think about making a film, my opening scene would always be like that in GBU, and that was BEFORE I remembered what GBU’s opening scene was. That’s mostly why I like the directors I do. They do things I wish they did, they do things the way I would have done them. Leone, Tarantino and Scorsese all fall under this category.
You can’t fault the music in this, it’s the perfect marriage between audio and visuals. I mean you just need to see the end duel sequence and you KNOW you’re watching something truly special. The dialogue, for it’s day even, is absolutely brilliant - so witty and interesting. Then comes the three lead characters. Are they not three of the coolest characters around? And the direction - well it speaks for itself really. Leone really knew how to shoot landscapes. He got the whole “epic feel” of it. John Ford must be proud. I mean this entire film is epic. Everytime I watch this, I like it more and more. But I don’t watch it often, I feel I have to earn the right to watch it. Everything should be perfect before I watch it. I love it.

a fist full of dollars is way better than OUAITW and so is for a few dollars more.
I have to agree partially with you, FOD is his best. But West is definitely second! But The Wild Bunch is still the one to beat, bar none. And I’m a Wayne fan, so that’s a bold statement.
Here’s my order of Leone preferences:
The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly
Once Upon a Time in the West
Fistful of Dynamite
For A Few Dollars More
Fistful of Dollars
(speakring ony of his westerns)
GBU drags mercilessly in the middle of the film, especially the prison camp scenes.

You know, ony. Like don’t fuck with this “ony”, motha fucka. It’s slang.
Is “speakring” slang too?
No, I was just using an Asian accent when I typed that. My bad.
Forgiven.
Thank you, Jesus.
