"Vaguely announced in the prior post is the Weinstein Bros. release of Grind House for which Quentin Tarantino and Robert Rodriguez each will direct a 60-minute horror tale. Grind House will be made in the spirit of old Hollywood presentations, including trailers and short extra materials between stories. Read on for this Earth-shattering announcement…

According to the Hollywood Reporter:

Quentin Tarantino, whose “Pulp Fiction” helped turn Miramax Films into a powerhouse, and Robert Rodriguez, whose “Spy Kids” movies have been a lucrative franchise for Miramax’s genre arm Dimension, are teaming up to make a film for Bob and Harvey Weinstein’s new Weinstein Co. The film is scheduled for a spring 2006 release as part of a rapidly evolving release slate, further details of which the Weinsteins announced Wednesday.

Tarantino and Rodriguez will each write and direct a 60-minute horror film, and the two films will be packaged together under the overall title “Grind House.” The film, which is planned for a spring 2006 release, also will include its own trailers, bonus materials and added extras from other filmmakers that will be packaged together between the two horror flicks in a tribute to the old, big-city movie houses like those on New York’s 42nd Street that earned the moniker grindhouses for programming genre pics back to back.

An aficionado of grindhouse, Tarantino sampled grindhouse genres in his recent “Kill Bill” films. He said “Grind House” could be the first in a series of films. In a statement, the Weinsteins said, “We couldn’t imagine anything more exciting than a film being made together by the two godfathers of our companies, Quentin and Robert.”

I think what’s especially interesting about this is, is the fact that the Weinsteins have an impressive slate of films coming up already shortly after their split from Disney. It’s not like the split and then start from scratch, its more like “see you guys! rot in hell, we have such good movies you’ll forever regret you opted us out you bastards”

Hell yeah!

From AICN:

Quentin Tarantino to compose the next Axel F adventure in a new BEVERLY HILLS COP sequel? Bit on GRIND HOUSE!

The next thing Quentin is shooting will be here in Austin, Texas with his buddy Robert Rodriguez and it’s called GRIND HOUSE.

Speaking of - at the SHARKBOY AND LAVAGIRL premiere here in Austin, I got to chat with Rodriguez about GRIND HOUSE quite a bit and this is really going to be a hardcore geekgasm of a flick. First - They’ll be getting very cool directors to create GrindHouse style trailers for fictional films to put between and before the film. As to who goes first? It seems that in California - Quentin’s hour will play first… In Texas - Robert’s hour will play first… and everywhere else - it’ll be projectionists’ discretion. Same with the order of the trailers before and between the “featured attractions”. They will be shot digitally - but in post - they’ll be made to have that flawed dirty, nappy - film stock changing at the “reel breaks” faded, pink, saturated 70’s film look. Sometimes there’ll be a “bad splice” to purposefully cause a missing piece of dialogue. In otherwords… it’ll be exactly like a GRIND HOUSE experience… only without the piss on the floor and rats residing in old discarded popcorn buckets in the theater. As for this BEVERLY HILLS COP 4 thing… nothing really to it.

i knew there was nothing to that beverly hills cop bullshit rumor.

i am excited about this. i think that will be something realy cool. thinking about it, tarantino wanted to do something grindhouse-like with Kill Bill but ended up with something high-quality, long and epic. it seems that with this 2 times 1 hour thing he can really do the grindhouse thing

Yeah, it sounds more and more serious, so more and more excellent

Whatever, just to postpone that Inglorious Bastards project forever. I think it won’t be so good, even Tarantino himself isn’t too amazed by it, if he keeps making other movies while he had to make IG years ago.

I sorta agree. It’s not that I don’t think Grind House will be awesome, it’s just that I think he has just made this niche and underdog film called Kill Bill, I think he should go back to make yet another serious film now, maybe an Oscar contender, before going back to making that filmgeek sorta film… or maybe shoot that very quickly and have Larry Bender do the preproduction on IB

I’m really waiting for the kung fu flick and even this one, but I think he should make another gangster film. Forget about Inglorious Bastards, war flicks suck, always, and think - how good can be a soundtrack of a war film? All this is very doubtful.

And again he’s doing a project with Rodriguez. Now look back at Rodriguez’s works - all of his greatest films were these where Tarantino was in. Spy Kids blow.

yeah but nevertheless he is a prodigy, if you look at how he works and all. he’s doing the kids films because he loves kids and making kids flicks, and they earn him lots of money.

i think of tarantino - rodriguez relationship like these two buddies who go out drink beer together, but one of them has wife and kids at home, and the other doesnt. so the one who has kids, goes home and takes care of his (spy) kids, and the other just goes out drinking everyday. so Tarantino’s the one who’s making films for mature audiences all the time, while Rodriguez wants to please both audiences. the families and the action fans…

i think both great talents in one place is an unbeatable mixture, think aobut FDTD, that was a highlight i think, and i think they can top that.
During his roundtable interview for upcoming release of Sin City on DVD we got a chance to talk to Robert Rodriguez about his upcoming projects. First up both Robert Rodriguez and Quentin Tarantino are writing a double feature exploitation film, called “Grind House,” it’s two movies as one. Basically they will be an hour apiece, and in between each film they will have fake trailers. Each film is going to be written and directed by them. Rodriguez also mentioned that the film will have a “Drive-In feelâ€? and that he will start shooting it as soon as he is done writing it. The film will be shot in Austin in the Fall; he will also be the DP for Quentin Tarantino one hour of the film. The Weinstein Co will distribute Grind House.

Robert is LA on vacation but actually staying at Quentin Tarantino’s house and writing.

When asked if he will be directing anything for TV like Quentin Tarantino did for CSI, Rodriguez mentioned that he would be directing a George Lopez Show episode. You will know which episode he is directing cause you will recognize his style.

Whether or not the Spy Kids Franchise is over? “We might do an animated straight to DVD thing, that will be it. Couldn’t do a live action thing, kids are too big, says Rodriguez.

Now as for Sin City 2, the film will be based on A Dame to Kill For, and the following characters will be coming back Marv, Gail, Dwight, Goldie/Wendy and Shellie plus some new characters he wouldn’t mention at this time cause you know…the trades need to announce it.
