New PTA film in development -- "DESPERADOES"!

But what do you mean by light entertainment?

I think he was referring to the trend of filmmakers having kids and making kids films.

Well if you’re not a Bette Davis fan, you’re probably a Joan Crawford fan. I like Joan, but I’m more of a Bette Davis person. But back to Paul, I heard he’s having a new kid. How good for him.

I don’t like Joan Crawford either. When it comes to golden age cinema I’m a sucker for the elegance of Max Ophuls. His films are like marshmellows.

Oh, like Robert Rodriguez.

No Joan and no Bette? I don’t know how I went on all my life without getting to know their work. I discovered their films very recently - and through them I’ve come to like some great directors like William Wyler, Robert Aldrich. I saw Dodsworth today - the one with Walter Huston and Mary Astor, I thought the film ran a little too long but when it was over I understood why it was as long as it was. It’s a great romance story. Yeah I have no clue who Max Opholus is, he sounds like some kind of Greek Emperor.

Ophuls.

He’s a German director who made lush, whimsical romances with brilliant camera techniques in the 40s/50s. Some were in French and other languages. Anyway, I highly recommend his stuff to you as you seem to be a fan of the golden age romances. La ronde is a great film to start with. Also, not that it matters, he’s been credited as an influence on P.T.

I know nothing of foreign films. I’d rather discover all the greats from America first and then go on to foreign films. I’m going to start my silent film collection soon, but I think I’ll do that within a year or so - if I don’t die by then of course…

I couldn’t think like that, there are so many great films to see… beside Ophuls made 4 or 5 films in Hollywood (Caught, Letter from an unknown woman, the exile and at least another one i can’t remember…)…

Couldn’t agree more. As good as American cinema is, the Germans, the French and Japanese do it better I’ve found. Granted nothing beats the off-beat existential cinema of the American 70s.

Is there a thread I could check out people around here’s favorite films?

[quote=“Lt. BioBasterd”]
Oh, like Robert Rodriguez.

Maybe, but whenever he makes a kids movie or something like that it isn’t too surprising since he works in that fantasy world most of the time anyway.

You have NO idea what you’re missing :-/

I hope this is PTA’s new project and that he doesn’t make us wait like he did between PDL and TWBB. He is the best director working today :smiley:
