I was disappointed when I first saw Straw Dogs a few years ago. I might rewatch it someday.

Kon Ichikawa
Yasujiro Ozu
Mikio Naruse
Edward Yang

I’ve never seen a Mikio Naruse film, but I was just about to buy the box set from Eureka because I have a feeling I’d love his films.
You definitely need to see an Ozu film though (he IS Shochiku, they are one and the same) and an Edward Yang film. He just died last year so it’s a good time to watch his films.

John Cassavettes

Will you watch Killing of a Chinese Bookie for me? The 138-minute long cut. I have to know what you think of it - or if you even finish watching it. I have a feeling you won’t like it. But I don’t know.
Ok, so out of… Never seen a single film from… Please tell which ones are worth seeing?

it’s never on TV, but I could rent it as soon as i get back to Vienna - which is in 3 weeks. (if you want my opinion sooner you’ll have to transfer me €20 for the DVD ;D )

Haha, I’d send you mine. But I might not get it back.
I’ve never seen a single film from Pedro Almodovar. I do have two of his films on dvd (Talk to Her and Bad Education) but just haven’t yet taken time to check em out.
Next semester I’m taking a course at university that is entirely about Cassavettes and his movies. We will also watch 5 of his most important movies. cant wait!

Awesome. I’d love to know what you think. No doubt the five will be: Shadows, Faces, The Killing of a Chinese Bookie, Opening Night and A Woman Under the Influence.
I did? QT was not joking when he said that. Definately.
You did, he meant that he’s not going to do a artsy farsy talky samurai film with alot of moral and subtext in it was going to be a down and dirty exploitation fun action cinema type of film (Kill Bill).
He meant it as a joke, I’ve heard he’s a big fan of Sanjuro, Yojimbo and 7 Samurai.

I’ve never seen any movie from him either, ahah.
BUT I just saw The Wild Bunch, so I can ow be proud to say I’ve seen my first Sam Peckinpah ;D
check out Bring me the head of alfredo garcia(best peckinpah film imo)
I’ve never seen a film that stars Bruce Lee. Honestly. And I love martial arts movies. How sick is that? lol. Well I already bought a box that has 4 of his movies, so that will be over pretty soon.
BTW, over the next couple of days, I will see 5 Cassavetes movies. I already saw one today, “Feces”
The Killing of a Chinese Bookie and Shadows are pretty good -at least for Cassavetes lovers. You can also watch this series he was in as an actor, he directed some of the episodes : Johnny Staccato.
I haven’t seen Opening Night and Gloria, which are said to be great too.
Of the most popular and well known directors I have probably catched at least 1 movie…so I dunno names…
I haven’t seen enough Japanese and Spanish stuff though
Kenneth! Just shut down your computer and go watch the Bruce Lee flicks! There is absolutely no way that you could not like them
Especially if you do have time to waste to watch the Super Mario Bros flick, go watch some Bruce Lee !!
So Angel, if you’re reading this…and to anybody else who cares:
I’ve seen 7 Cassavetes movies now, all on the big screen (and for free, otherwise I wouldn’t have watched that many)
One was great (A Woman Under the Influence)
2 were acceptable (A Child is Waiting, The Chilling of a Burmese Cookie)
4 were horrible (Shadows, Faces, Opening Night, Love Streams)
not a good average, not at all.
Ahah, at least, now you can discuss them because you’ve seen a lot. That’s the principal. Plus most of the people would have stopped after the first or third movie they’d hated from the same director, even if it’s free !
What’s the next director that you’ll focus on ?

Haha, I thought something like that. But I’m surprised you thought The Killing of a Chinese Bookie was acceptable. Did you watch the long cut or Cassavetes’ edited-down cut? When that film premiered people hated, and I mean HATED it. They left the cinema and went around warning people about to go in to see another film. That’s why he ended up cutting it. So it’s funny that you liked that one more than Shadows, Faces, Opening Night and Love Streams.
Currently, I would say Cassavettes as well, but I taped Killing/Bookie a while and will watch it next month.
Others:
Rainer Werner Fassbinder
Luchino Visconti
Satyajit Ray
Ozu (I’ve heard that he LOVES to hold a long shot. This tends to be aggrivating for me and a reason why I’ve yet to check out his work)
Pier Paolo Pasolini
