Jello Biafra not happy with Dead Kennedys song in Grindhouse

From Punknews.org

Sorry I tried to hide the spoiler part down there as best I could.

Jello Biafra has issued a public statement condemning his former bandmates in the Dead Kennedys for licensing their classic song, “Too Drunk to Fuck” to the upcoming Quentin Tarantino/Robert Rodriguez double feature, Grindhouse.

Biafra’s objections specifically stem from the song’s placement in the film, in a rape scene:

"The scene is actually in the “Planet Terror” film directed by Rodriguez. (Spoiler) [color=black]Tarantino himself is pointing a gun at a disabled amputee woman’s head yelling “Dance, Bitch!” as the Nouvelle Vague cover of “Too Drunk to Fuck” plays from a boombox. The terrified woman later “wins” by killing Tarantino, but that excuse does not rescue this at all. I wrote every note of that song and this is not what it was meant for. (end Spoiler)

Some people will do anything for money. I can’t help but think back to how prudish Klaus Flouride was when he objected to H.R. Giger’s painting on the “Frankenchrist” poster, saying he couldn’t bear to show it to his parents. I’d sure love to be a fly on the wall when he tries to explain putting a song in a rape scene for money to his teenage daughter. "

Jello and his former bandmates have frequently sparred in the press in the years since the lawsuits which allowed three quarters of the band to tour with him.

Note: As Jello’s message contains a possible “spoiler” you will need to highlight the note to see what was said.

Man that is so cool, cant wait to hear it in the movie.

I’m shocked that Rodriguez even put a licensed song in a movie. When’s the last time he did this? Dusk til Dawn? He’s relied on making his own music since then.

Speaking of that…the music playing when the guy gets stabbed by El Ray sounds kind of like the terminator to me…am I alone on this?

so he’s not happy, so what? They should use whatever suits the scene best. if its original material, good. if it’s licensed song, so be it. i respect Tarantino for taking all the time so search for good licensed songs that fit one of his scenes because so far, that turned out to be awesome every time.

Im sure its not going to taint Jello’s conscience forever if one of his punk songs is used in a crazy scene in an exploitation film. Give us a break Jello!

Last time I checked , Stuck In The Middle With You isn’t about some psycho who likes torturing cops. And Comanche isn’t about gay anal rape. A song can fit the mood of a scene, but that doesn’t mean its lyrics necessarily coincide with what is happening on screen. In conclusion: this guy is an ass and doesn’t have a clue what he’s talking about.

Jello just likes to protest against things, thats all. If hes not protesting against republicans, hes protesting against music being used in movies. haha.

Somebody break out the world’s smallest violin.

Is this the song that plays in the trailers? Cuz I wanna download it… Its the coolest song ever…

Its an awesome song alright…not sure if the song is on the trailer or not but download it anyway.

Just added “Too Drunk” to my page ,thanks Jello !!!

His beef is really with his ex-bandmates. He was also pissed when they licensed a track to Levis or something.

Tarantino has a way of owning the songs that end up in his films (I know this is the Rodriguez half).

That can be good for a song and its artist but there’s no denying that it will change how it is heard from now on.

Jello’s a big old-school lefty. I’m not surprised that he would have trouble with one of his songs becoming the theme to a rape scene.

There was similar controversy when Natural Born Killers featured a song by Nusrat Fateh Ali Kahn.

'Lefty’s can have taste too…

I’m a lefty too (socialist). However, I don’t see why he’s kicking up a fuss, so what if its for a rape scene?

you wear che guevara shirts? :stuck_out_tongue:

I’m a lefty pretty much, but I get kinda tired of people who protest against everything thats not PC, especially in movies and music. Its like when Spike Lee was talking smack about QT because he uses the N word in his movies.

Che was a commie.

John McCain thinks, and this cracks me up, “that Hollywood should self-volunteer to tone down on sex and violence.”

I agree, PC is bollocks.
