I hope he knows what he’s doing. It doesn’t always work for films to use songs and music that doesn’t reflect the time period that the film takes place in. That was a big criticism of Coppola’s Marie Antoinette.
You didn’t like that? I thought it worked really well. Kirsten Dunst, a mid-20s chick playing a 16 year old Austrian with an American accent? I don’t think relevance or realism was top of the list. That’s not a criticism, I loved that movie and its use of music.
If Quentin adopted this style I think he would be more than capable of carrying it off but I think music from the period itself would be great - I’m sure he’d be able to find some great gems.
The beauty of this project is that its like nothing QT’s done before. Its out of his comfort zone of modern pop culture and is a stretch I think he needs to take to silence all those critics who say he’s past his best.
Marie-Antoinette was an EXCELLENT movie and sometimes misunderstood cause almost revolutionary in terms of originality (the use of music, anachronism). People didn’t understand it and instead focused on the historicity, realism, the fact that it wasn’t politic, wasn’t focused on the French Revolution and so on, which wasn’t the point at all of the movie.
But I don’t think the use of music in Inglorious Bastard will be treated the same way as in Marie-Antoinette. Sofia Coppola and Tarantino hasn’t the same approach of music in their movies even it’s important for both of them and a major element in their aesthetic. I’m sure QT will do a great job as always and nobody should worry about his choices cause we’ll love the soundtrack in the end.

It could have been if not for the God awful screen presence (or lack of) from Kirsten Dunst. Is she not the worst ‘actress’ you’ve ever seen?
As far as the music goes. I’d be cool if Rodriguez was on board, but his constany Spanish guitar riffs just annoy me. There is a track in Planet Terror called Grindhouse Blues and it would have worked so much better without the inclusion of a Spanish riff.

Great movie but yeah I thought Dunst was pretty random. I wouldn’t go as far as to say she’s the worst actress I’ve ever seen but she’s certainly ordinary. Just your basic run-of-the-mill hollywood actress. I think Coppola was spot on with Scarlett Johansson in LIT but she could have been a little more experimental in her choice of lead actress for M.A.

That’s just his style though. It works well for spaghetti western inspired movies which is apparently the direction QT’s going with Inglorious Bastards.
Similar scene in FLAGS OF OUR FATHERS, with the boys on deck listening to some music from the period on the eve of landing on Guadalcanal…
This so works in a “big” war film, right before we see the carnage of battle; just the boys, digging on a tune, almost like whistling while walking past the graveyard late in the evening. It’s a great device that lends human credibility to the characters.
And I dig Rodriquez’ ability to score his own films (for the most part), but NOBODY does it better than Clint Eastwood. UNFORGIVEN and the last scenes of FOOF are ideal examples of this, no?

cool interview. like the NBK bit. his response to the question is a lot better than some of the responses he gave over the years
I totally get why QT does not like NBK but I think he really missed the point of that scene, which I love. Its meant to be bad and ironic. It stll manages to be pretty darn funny as well.
I know I’ll get slapped here for saying this but NBK in this form still works for me and very well I might add. What the movie became is exactly what the movie was supposed to represent. Masterpiece!
Ugh. NBK. Ugh. I had a dream once, a long, LONG time ago, about Oliver Stone getting high and wanking onto a page, then smearing the spunk around on it and then magically interprutting the streaks into scenes. I think that had to do with how NBK turned out.
“Sebastian Haseleck for QTA News! Im standing here with Quentin Tarantino, the director of Inglorious Basterds! Quentin, this movie is going to be insane! Can you tell us more about it?!”
"(sipping hot coffee)…What is this?!..WHAT ARE YOU SHOOTING?!! (slaps camera)…YOU MOTHAFUCKAS!! (Patooie!)…(spits)…GET OFF MY SET!..(sips hot coffee) AHH!! MMMM!!..(motions to Nazi extras) GET EM BOYS!!"
All comedy aside, thats awesome he’ll be in Germany. Hope we can get some special reports about the film.
OK, so it doesnt look like Mike will be in this, unless hes cast in another role. Weird! That character maybe was in the other 400 pages he wrote and he had to cut it. Guess we’ll never know until someone asks him.
