Hard Boiled (1992) Directed by John Woo

blue tints? what is that?

Adding a blue shade into the image. Many HK Video’s transfers are notably more blue than the releases by other companies.

oh, ok. i know their release of Hard Boiled has been criticised for this but: I’m old enough to have seen the film in a theater on it’s release and that’s the way it looked. The photography of the film is inspired by die hard and even more by terminator 2: blue/grey steel, very cold. no green whatsoever. Their transfer is based on the Japanese LD that is basicaly the best transfer of the film ever. having say that a dvd transfer will never be perfect. a print is 8)

That’s not true, just check the link that Hung fist posted. It’s not because DD is coming from Weinstein co and that QT is involved at some level that their releases are perfect and better than the others…

I’m not saying just because QT is involved in DD that its better Quality than others but I will say I do perfer DD because its easier to get than getting the HK dvd but Im not gonna make opinions to I buy DD’s hard Boiled

I haven’t seen the HK Video Hard Boiled transfer with my own eyes, and I don’t know how the film is supposed to look like, but judging by those caps the amount of blue in the image is very similiar to many of their other releases. And it has been confirmed that in most of those cases the blueness was not intended by the filmmakers. Hard boiled I actually believe is an exception although I still have to say I don’t like seeing characters with blue/while faces (see the cap of Leung and Wong in the car). Their releases of The Street Fighter, Female Prisoner 701: Scorpion and many Hideo Gosha films “suffer” from the exact same effect. Here’s caps from some of my HK Video dvds

Female Prisoner 701: Scorpion: HKV1 vs Media Blasters 1, HKV2 vs MB 2, HKV3 vs MB3

(MB features the Toei transfer)

The Street Fighter: HKV vs Toei, HKV2 vs Toei 2

Return of the Street Fighter: HKV1, HKV 2 / compare to dvdbeaver Optimum caps

Violent Streets: HKV1, HKV2, HKV3

But I actually recall the Tartan dvd having a slight bluiesh tint, which however was more natutal looking than what HK Video looks in those caps. I’ll go check and report back, this post is long enough already ;D

OMFG :o!! i will check all those films you captured no later than tonight. It’s amazing. Having say that, HB (because it looks blue like it is supposed to) and The killer (because it doesn’t ;D) look really good… But, man i’m speechless, i’m without speech

I didn’t cap them right now, they’re from my old reviews and comparisons… I haven’t even bothered to get my ass up and go check the Tartan HB yet ;D

But yeah, their The Killer dvd is a Gods gift as it features the far superior longer cut (although it still doesn’t feature all the deleted scenes from the HKL release). Mandarin and poor quality but I’m actually thankful. Since no-one’s ever gonna release that version again I won’t have to worry about upgrading to better editions. Ah, peace for my soul

it’s also thanks to HK Video I’m not in a mental institution right now (Drunken Master full cantonese, yeee).

Damn, I’ve never seen a mod taking a thread so off topic before ;D

yeah but the cause was noble 8)

thanks

I checked my Tartan HB and while some of the original blueness remains it’s probably reduced from the intended. A much bigger problem is the pixelization during many action scenes. Hard Boiled is far from a compression friendly film but it’s still not nice. I don’t have any other versions handy so I don’t know how well or badly the others do. HB DD blue ray just started sounding strangely tempting. I’d have to get a blue ray player first of course… ;D

Wasnt there a three hour cut of Hard Boiled at one time?

What dvd is completely uncut?

I don’t like this movie.

Here i’ll explain why. For one the drama is pure melodrama, just thrown in there half-assed like to make the tone of the film more serious, it’s completely unfitting in an “epic” action film of this scale.

Two it’s waaaay over the top, and SO unrealistic that it’s hard for me to even like the action scenes for the lack of substance, Chow Yun Fatt flys around in every scene like a superhero, totally unrealistic, but then again Woo isn’t Mr. Realistic to begin with so i’ll give him credit for being able to stage an good action sequence even if it’s out of this world.

So it’s physically pretentious, just Woo showing off what he can create in action scenes and not delivering anything credible for a plot or effective story.

Three, the acting sucks ass, Chow is too serious, Leung is too gay only Anthony Wong pulls it off right as the bad guy.

Four there’s too much violence, now I love violent movies, but the violence is needless and mindless, too many people die in the name of stylish action scenes, real violence is nothing like this half baked fantasy Woo created to compensate for his lack of skill as a director.

Nerds, eat your heart out.

There’s an extended taiwanese dvd release which I haven’t seen. For some reason I never was too interested in seeing it, even though the taiwanese cut of The Killer is something I’ll be praising to heaven till the end of my life…

From IMDB: “The Taiwan DVD is nine minutes longer, has new music and a new cut. It is the longest and most violent version available.”

There used to be a review here but the page is no longer working.

Huh, that’s funny, that’s why I enjoy the film. And I wouldn’t say the acting sucks, I wouldn’t say it is the best, but it doesn’t suck, especially Chow’s acting.
