Giallo

this is a topic for people who have seen a lot of Giallo. i haven’t seen any but i am very interested in seeing some films by Bava, Argento, or Fulci. has anyone seen films like Suspiria (is this even Giallo?), Deep Red, The Beyond, Lisa and the Devil, or others? What Giallo would be the best introduction for a newbie to italian horror films like myself?

Rent Suspiria. It’s not always referred to as a Giallo, but it’s one of Argento’s best and has a great use of tension by use of music and colors. You have to see this on a fairly large tv with a good dvd of it to get the full effect. Tenebrae and Deep Red are supposed to be 2 other really good Argento films, and i’m gonna rent those this weekend and i’ll post what I thought.

thanks dude.

my shitty video store near my house don’t have any of this kind of stuff, though. so if i want to see these movies, i’ve gotta buy them. so i hope they’re worth it

just try netflix

i’m about to start my 2 week trial now, if i can get them to accept my fuckin checking account

another good idea. thanks man, you’re a big help

Netflix has: (i’m bored, by the way)

And non-Giallo Italian Horror-

er…I don’t want to start a new topic or anything, but netflix also has a bunch of rare Asian stuff that you could never find in stores like Kids Return, Violent Cop, Hero, Zatoichi, Gonin, Black Angel, Pistol Opera, Branded To Kill, Versus Director’s Cut, Last Hurrah for Chivalry, Eastern Condors, Happiness of the Katikuras, Ichi the Killer Uncut, Fudoh Uncut, Audition Uncut, and a whole shitload of Suzuki/Fukasaku films

you’re referring to the old Zatoichi, right? kitano’s isn’t even out yet. aren’t they supposed to release kitano’s Zatoichi around July 4th here in the states? anyway, my sister supposedly ordered kitano’s Zatoichi on ebay along with Shogun assassins, Mibu Gishi Den, and Hero for my birthday, but i haven’t gotten them yet. :’(

no, they said they had Kitano’s Zatoichi. what’s Mibu Gishi Den? i’m getting a dvd-r of Shogun Assassins in a couple weeks, so that oughta be sweet

I've had Kitano's Zatoichi for about a month and got Hero last week. Both fucking amazing. Especially Zatoichi cuz Tadanobu Asano is in it, and I buy anything he's in. I'm really into Asian film, esp. Japanese films. But more important, Takashi Miike films. I've started a small collection of them. Haven't been disappointed yet.

I really can’t wait for Hero and Zatoichi to come out in theaters this summer. That’s gonna rock.

You seen City of Lost Souls, momojiri_onna? That movie’s great and the Japanese punk soundtrack is sweet. I still have only seen the shitty edited version of Ichi, but i’m gonna try to rent the uncut one this week

what does “giallo” translate to? and how do you say it?

and here’s a site that sells rare hard to find giallos; http://revengeismydestiny.com/Giallos.html

GIALLO literally translates to YELLOW. the name comes from old paperback books made in italy where the paper turned yellow or something. basically, it’s Italian pulp fiction on translated to the screen.

i don’t know how to explain the pronunciation, though.

sorry :-/

Im guessing it goes, "Gee-all-o"

I’ll ask my aunt and uncle, they speak italian. Im going to Italy in one year! Im gonna try and visit the still-standing Sergio Leone film sets/locations!

fuck yeah, man. That shit would be awesome. Try to check out the place where Sean and Juan mow down all the stormtroopers with the machine guns in Fistful or the final shoot-out in GBU.* If anyone lives near Arizone, they can check out the arc from the final flashback in Once Upon a Time in the West

*er wait…maybe that’s in Spain

i just saw SUSPIRIA for the first time and i’m still trying to decide how i feel about it. clearly, Dario Argento is a very talented director, but i don’t think he is a very good screenwriter. he co-wrote the script with another guy and the story gets muddled up and slow in parts. directorially speaking, however, Argento has some amazing visuals throughout the film. he also uses a lot of different colored lighting the change the mood of the scene. i’m very curious to see moreo of Argento’s work, but i’m hoping that he made some films that he didn’t write, he may be a great director, but i think he should leave the screenwriting to somebody else, but hey, this is just my opinion. any thoughts?

fuck, thats what I ment, Spain. Im going to ITaly but will make a stop in Spain. Most the locations were there, is there any in Italy? I know there’s supposed to be like a Mini Hollywood or someshit thats like a whole desert town from a few spaghetti westerns.
