Looks like the transfers are as good as Panik House’s pinky violence collection transfers were.
Dice, this may be your lucky day. Discotek said they’re releasing a “Teruo Ishii pinky samurai movie and a Norifumi Suzuki Nikkatsu film”. The first one would assumably be Porno jidaigeki - Bohachi bushido… but the second? Some people quessed for Beautiful Girl Hunter but I thought Panik House (–> Synapse?) had that. Of course it’s possible Discotek bought the rights from them. Anyway, Suzuki didn’t do more than a handful of films at Nikkatsu, so…

Suzuki filmography:

“Porno Jidaigeki” may be awesome. “Lone Wolf and Cub” with a colourful Exploitation-Twist sounds like a real killer. “Beautiful Girl Hunter”, on the other hand, I found to be absolute crap.
Discotek confirmed it’s Bohachi Bushido and Beautiful Girl Hunter. I’ll be getting Beautiful Girl Hunter of course (;)) and everybody else should get Bohachi Bushido at least. As I’ve said before it’s an amazing film, a pinky violence version of Lone Wolf and Cub but more colourful and just as violent. And the epic ending is jaw dropping.
I got to see Horrors of Malformed Men in a brand new print and with an introduction and a q&a with teruo ishii afterwards. though the film is unique and all, i was quite disapointed with it. i read the novel it is inspired from, a few years before and i have been waiting a long time before i finally got to see it but frankly, the film didn’t do the trick for me…
Just finished Malformed Men. An amazing film that should be in any self respecting genre fan’s collection if you ask me. Review coming some day but I’ll do a few other Ishii’s first.
i remember during the q&a someone in the audience asked teruo ishii if the tortures where a political comment on what happened in camp 731 during WW2… and ishii replied that there were no connection at all and that to his opinion, camp 731 never existed and that never ever happened there… it was amazing, it was in a huge theater; like full with 600 people and all of a sudden you could hear the sound of the crickets…
Very interesting, thanks.
Japanese exploitation films tend to be full of political content like
Lynch Law Classroom: torture methods used by american soldiers in Vietnam
Jailhouse 41: japanese war veterans going after the escaped female prisoners and raping them like they did to the chinese women during the war
Sasori 701: throwing the knife at the japanese flag, among others
Red Handcuffs: pissing over the US army signs, kidnapping the american immigrants etc.
Criminal Woman: buying guns from the american G.I’s
just to mention a few
Ha, Quentin Tarantino is a Nikkatsu roman porno fan
“I even like — in fact, I’m quite enamored with — the whole Nikkatsu (studio) roman poruno thing ('70s, big-budget adult movies). I almost can’t believe that that existed in cinema! The way they did it in the '70s, where they’re real movies with real actors. The woman who played the proprietor in “Kill Bill” (Yuki Kazamatsuri), she was a roman poruno actress. I saw a couple of her films and I thought they were fantastic! Even the fact that the genitals were blurred out actually made it work even more!”

I would’ve expected him to be more of a Toei fan, though. Although he probably is a big Toei fan. I mean I’m sure he is.
i really want to get into these pinky violence movies, could someone give me like 5-10 movies of the pinky violence genre that are a must see.
Hmm…
Zero Woman: Red Handcuffs
Female Prisoner 701: Scorpion
Female Prisoner Scorpion: Jailhouse 41
School of the Holy Beast
Inferno of Torture
Porno Jidaigeki - Bohachi Bushido
Sex & Fury
Female Yakuza Tale
Criminal Woman: Killing Melody
Terrifying Girl’s High School: Lynch Law Classroom
that list exludes Nikkatsu and Toho productions as well as Toei films that don’t fit so well under the ‘pinky violence’ banner (although based on this you could argue whether Bohachi bushido belongs to the list…). And of course all the undiscovered gems (japanese cinema is full of them).
yeah Nikkatsu is great. but the films wasn’t big budgets at all, they were using all the equipment the studio already had during its golden age, and all the crew were under contract and those were the same persons who were working on the classics from the earlier years. that’s why the films look so good. Noboru Tanaka and Masaru Konuma are two amazing directors. A woman called Abe Sada is a masterpiece and it is wayyyyy better than the Oshima version. and a wife to be sacrificed is fantastic. i didn’t like it the first time i saw it (because i saw it on a double bill with Female Prisoner Scorpion: Jailhouse 41 and the Scorpion blew my mind so hard that Wife suffered from the comparison) but i saw it again a year later at an hommage to Masaru Konuma (I got to met him at this occasion) and i thought it was great, the directing is really impressive… and naomi tani is hot as hell.

Having seen so little myself it’s hard to say but Tanaka does look interesting. His Angel Guts instalment was very good. Looking forward to his take on Abe Sada (I’ve seen the Obayashi, Oshima and Ishii (mini) versions so far)
Konuma on the other hand… I hated Hana to hebi and found Hirusagari no joji koto mandara only okay… I don’t know if I wanna try Wife to Be Sacrificed now.
Hasebe’s Assault! Jack the Ripper was a disappointment to me, too. Not a bad film by any means and I’ll be giving it a second change but didn’t quite live up to its reputation. Rape! 25th Hour still went to my shopping list, though (dvd coming this month… or was it the next???)
i know i have seen flower and snake but i have no recollection of it at all, what is the english title of Hirusagari no joji koto mandara??
konuma, as far as i am concerned is pure classic nikkatsu style… have you read the encyclopedia of japanese sex films by Thomas Weisser?? (a lot of persons told me that there were some mistakes and that he hardly saw any of the films he is writing about… but hey how many of these books are there in English???)
haven’t seen jack the ripper… hasebe is the guy who did the stray cats rock serie, right?? i love the title but i haven’t seen any of those though i’d love to

I don’t think it has one.

Yeah, I have that book. I haven’t been reading it so much because I don’t have nearly as much interest for Nikkatsu as for Toei but it’s useful, yes. And it begins with an introduction by Naomi Tani.

Most of the Stray Cat films (or all?) and the fourth Sasori film too (which I found a bit disappointing at first but later totally fell in love with). He also directed several yakuza films at Nikkatsu in the late 60’s / early 70’s. Black Tight Killers is one of his best known works.
I might add that Hasebe was one of the several Nikkatsu employees who found themselves in a weird position when the company went roman porno. Hasebe took a break from Nikkatsu and worked for television as well as Toei but finally came back to Nikkatsu in the mid 70’s. Ironically he then ended up directing some of the most notorious violent pinku films of the 70’s (although Jack the Ripper wasn’t nearly has hard hitting as I expected when it comes to graphical violence…)
I got the english title of the upcoming Hasebe dvd wrong. It’s Rape! 13th Hour (Rape! 25-ji bokan) (レイプ25時 暴姦) (1977), not Rape! 25th Hour. The dvd release date is September 21. Here’s the cover art:

I have no idea who “the proprietor” is in Kill Bill but the actress he’s talking about is the woman who played Mayumi in Somai’s Sailor Suit and Machine Gun.
The older Japanese lady whos yapping at Charlie Brown/lady who slips on the blood after the big battle in the HOBL is the one I think he means.
Hung, I was just trying to figure out where to add the Pinky Violence films in the Deuce. Should I file them under Sexploitation or under Japanese Chambara/Yakuza Films?

Ah, thanks. I’ll check that next weekend. There’s a 120 km distance between me and my Kill Bill dvds…

This is a bit hard. Not all pinky violence can be considered sexploitation (for example Worthless to Confess which comes with almost no nudity and sex at all). Chambara and yakuza on the other are even further off. If I were you I’d make a separate category titled ‘pinky violence & roman porno’ (maybe with some sub-categories)

OK cool. What Ive done is made a page with main genre links (Blaxploitation etc), then inside those pages theres any subgenres of that category.
I’ll just make a main genre called Pinky Violence & Roman Porno then.
Hung, just wondering if your copy of Blind Woman’s Curse came with an insert/booklet becuse mine did’nt.
