General Pinky Violence / Pinku Eiga thread

Fuck, don’t startle me that way! :o That almost gave me a hard-attack! Too bad I already bought the Collection . . .

They really should be releasing “Sukeban Girl Boss”, it’s sequel and all the other “Stray Cat Rock”-Movies.

Hung,

Don’t know if you found out yet, but I checked out the commentary for Classroom last night and according to Chris, those yakuza greetings were a real thing!

Oh, btw, these movies sure DO NOT get old on repeated viewings!

oh, thanks.

and damn, I just realized my own post (new Guerilla and Classroom dvds) is in the wrong topic :embarassed:

Dice, you’re a mod, why didn’t you move our posts to the correct thread ? :stuck_out_tongue:

New Pinky Violence Collection trailer:

<LINK_TEXT text=“http://www.panikhouse.com/releases/the_ … oxset.html”>PaniKHouse.com is for sale | HugeDomains</LINK_TEXT>

Not very good in my opinion. They’ve included like every singe nude scene from each movie to that trailer. Those super cool movie are so much more than just nudity.

I emailed Panik House and asked them if there was more Teruo Ishii on the way and they said they have no current plans for new Teruo Ishii dvds. Too bad, it looks like I’ll end up getting all of Toei’s Pinky Violence dvds before someone ports them over to R1.

Porno Jidaigeki - Bohachi Bushido

Being a pinky violence fan isn’t always easy. So many great films have only been released in Japan and without subtitles. Teruo Ishii’s relatively unknown 1973 film Porno Jidaigeki – Bohachi Bushido is one of those. With films like this you have two choices; to skip them, or to watch them without subtitles. I chose the latter. Was Porno Jidaigeki worth the trouble?

Hell yeah. Why? Because it’s probably Ishii’s best film ever. It’s certainly the best pinky violence film I’ve seen since Sex & Fury. The beginning isn’t so promising, though. Without subs the film gets slighly boring after the fantastic opening credits sequence. There’s lots of dialogue, and also some unnecessary nudity with no artistic merits (something that also bothered me in Female Yakuza Tale). Thankfully the main character (the excellent Tetsuro Tamba) keeps grinning like a madman and prevents you from losing your interest.

After the first 15 minutes everything changes. The Teruo Ishii show begins. Mindblowing colors, beautiful set ups, crazy characters, good soundtrack, great fight scenes, severed limbs fltying through the air… The ninja vs. naked women killer squad battle deserves a special mention. The movie just keep getting better and better. By the end of the film I was almost in tears because the film was so good. Especially the final showdown was extremely satisfying. I didn’t even miss subtitles. After all the visual and sexual orgy I was just happy to own this movie, subs or no subs.

Why doesn’t any dvd distributor want to port Toei’s Teruo Ishii releases to R1? Ishii’s a big name right now and Toei’s transfers are excellent. No further remastering needed.

I was a bit surprised to find out that some of Ishii’s Tokugawa films have been released on dvd in Germany. Bad quality and dubbed in German, though. What makes it all the worse is that they’ve released Orgies of Edo, which not available anywhere else. I’m still not gonna get it because of the dub.

There’s also some Dutch releases by Japan Shock with english subtitles. Gonna pass those because the same films are available as remastered Toei dvds.

And my final complaint; why in hell is Toei so slow at releasing their movies. If they keep up like this, their whole catalogue will be out by the year 3900 >:(

I’m guessing few people manage to look her in the eye, and not because they’re afraid of her.

There’s a dvdbeaver review for Naked Pursuit. As usual, Gary W. Tooze doesn’t know much about anything, but the review’s better than nothing I quess. At least there’s some interesting back story there

Looks interesting enough to me. And the $9 price tag makes it even more interesting. Too bad the dvd doesn’t seem very good. But keep in mind this is a very rare film that is not even available in Japan.

Midnight Eye review for Ninja Vixens:

“Made in the days when shooting on video hadn’t yet acquired a veneer of arthouse chic, this fourth installment in a long-running series was released as a one-shot overseas. This episode is a departure of sorts, as it is a variation on the Japanese folk tale Chushingura, or The 47 Ronin.

As one might expect from a direct-to-video movie about lethal lady ninjas, it’s exploitation all the way. Don’t expect Sho Kosugi-style black outfits here. The ninja garb these girls wear more closely resembles something out of an 80s pop video (as, by the way, does the music). Luckily for the male viewer, they feel just as comfortable wearing no clothes at all.

Not surprisingly their most powerful weapons are their bodies, rather than swords or shurikens, and they are more than willing to use them in the line of duty. As if the sight of eager naked flesh weren’t enough, the girls also employ a variety of spells to enthrall the men they have been sent to kill. These range from colourful (a swamp of bright green goo that spits from their hands) to highly inventive (glowing eggs pulled from their vaginas that spread a hypnotic, aphrodysiac mist).

Despite its B-movie intentions, Ninja Vixens is fairly solid in the more traditional areas of moviemaking. Sets, costumes and acting range from decent to good throughout. Its storyline may be messy, due to an over-abundance of characters and antagonists (I guess that’s what you get when you add eight female ninjas to an already well-populated folk tale), but the viewer who knows what he’s getting himself into (notice I use the masculin form here) will find plenty of good stuff on offer.”

Now the good news: The film is available on dvd in Japan for a very affordable price of 2500 yen

CDJapan : Kunoichi Ninpocho IV Chushingura Hisho Japanese Movie DVD

And even better news: The film may or may not get a R1 release soon. Geneon/Pioneer will be releasing four Ninja Vixens films in september/october. So far the technical info is a total mess (no production year, no cast info, new english titles) and not even I can identify the films that are about to be released.

Hey, good news for me. The Glamorous Life of Sachiko Hanai will be screened at this years R&A film festival. I hope I’ll be able to catch it there.

An something for the rest of you; another Naked Pursuit review: http://www.dvdmaniacs.net

And finally, an important note: do not rely too much on IMDB when it comes to old Teruo Ishii movies. For example all the review links, some of the user reviews and some of the technical info on the Tokugawa irezumi-shi: Seme jigoku (1969) page are actually for Shogun’s Sadism. That’s a film made 7 years later by another director.

Speaking of Tokugawa irezumi-shi, a full review (by me) will follow sooner or later

I think I was wrong about Ninja Vixens before. The film that was reviewed at midnighteye (Kunoichi Ninpo-cho IV: Chushingura Hisho) is probably not going to be released. There was a series of exploitation movies called Kunoichi Ninpocho in the 90’s, and Chushingura Hisho was the fourth instalment in the series. The movies that are going to be released on R1 are called Kunoichi nimpoden, and I believe those were made in the 2000’s. I’m 75% sure (based on casting) I managed to identify one of the movies, which is Flame of Seduction aka Kunoichi nimpoden: Kaen imbi.

Tokugawa irezumi-shi: Seme Jigoku (1968)

I was a bit dubious about the nature of the film, but since all the screencaps looked so great I thought I should give it a chance. It’s a Teruo Ishii film afterall. It’s just that ‘Inferno of Torture’ doesn’t sound like a very promising title to me. But don’t worry. Right after the opening credits the violence is toned down to the typical pinky violence whipping action. By the half way through Ishii seems have forgotten the whole theme of torture, as there’s hardly any violence in the rest of the film. Only the ending features a real shocker, but it’s okay. It’s quick and so over the top that it’s kinda amusing. These gruesome scenes work nicely when they’re few and far between. And that’s exactly how Ishii handles them here.

Quite surprisingly, Inferno of Torture is a rather beautiful movie. There’s a few glimpses of extreme violence, but as you’d expect from Ishii the production values are top notch. The settings are colorful, the music is well chosen and the tone is kept more serious than usual. While the film’s not quite as artistic as some of Norifumi Suzuki’s best work it’s certainly something different from the usual psychedelic Ishii show. Some of the more romantic and tragic scenes are genuinely beautiful, almost touching.

So, does this mean the film doesn’t live up to its title. Yes and no. The original japanese title doesn’t include the word “torture” at all. The film’s also got an alternate and more describing english title; Hell’s Tattooers. That’s more what the movie is about. I’ve never been an huge fan of tattoos, but watching this movie and seeing the most amazing pieces of art being tattooed on the tokugawa women’s skin was quite an experience actually.

What struck me most was the film’s structure. The movie is centered around two rivalry tattoo artists and a bunch of girls who are held as prisoners and forced to work geishas. Ishii constantly changes the point of view from one character to another. The plot is not about any specific character, instead there’s a central story that is viewed through several different character. We move back and forth between at least four main characters. Yet, unlike you might expect, we’re not shown the same happenings several times. The main story keeps rolling on and while were following the story through one character’s point of view, we don’t always get to see what happens to the others meanwhile.

This kind of structure is a bit risky and it did feel slightly confusing at first. After the first 30 minutes I caught the idea and was very impressed by it. However, it’s possible that this ingenious structure was just an accidental outcome from the fact that the movie doesn’t have a real main character. Ishii has lots of stuff he wants to show us, but no comprehensible way to stuck it all into one story. So, he decides to change the main character every 15 minutes in order to make it possible to include all of his witty, perverted and totally unrelated ideas in a one movie. Who knows. Who cares.

The Big Announcement!

Exactly one month ago I promised to announce something huge. Well the wait is over! Panik House is entering into a production partnership with Synapse Films to release seven more films from the Toei vaults. Five proto-Pinky Violence films and two films of a new genre: Pinky Horror!

With the CasaNegra line in full swing and the Chained Heat films on the way, I needed to call in marines, so to speak, to handle the film transfers and over-all production on this latest crop of Pinky Violence titles, which have never before been released on DVD anywhere. And who better than Don May Jr. and Jerry Chandler from Synapse? I’ve been looking for an excuse to work with Don on a project for about a decade (going back even before my days at Blue Underground!) and these films have provided me with the perfect opportunity.

Which films you ask?

Let’s start with the Pinky Horror titles first:

Edogawa Ranpo Zenshu: Kyofu Kikei Ningen; aka Horror Of The Malformed Men

This is the most notorious film in the history of Japanese cinema. It has been banned since it’s release in 1969, and is the film that really cemented Teruo Ishii’s reputation as a master in the art of transgressive filmmaking. All rhetoric aside, this is one of the true classics of the era.

Kaidan Hebi-onna; aka Snake Woman’s Curse This was the first of the Pinky Horror films released by Toei. It was helmed by master director Nobuo Nakagawa, who has been called the Japanese Hitchcock, and Akemi Negishi (Sex & Fury, Lady Snowblood) stars.

This brings us to the two series that served as the protypes of the Pinky Violence films and were the direct inspiration for Sex & Fury and just about every female protagonist film to follow. There’s the three film Okatsu series, starring Junko Miyazuno, and the two Silver Butterfly films that launched icon of icons Meiko Kaji.

Here’s a title list:

Yoen Dokufu Den : Hannya no Ohyaku; aka Sexy Deadly Legend: Female Demon Ohyaku

Yoen Dokufu Den : Hitokiri Okatsu; aka Sexy Deadly Legend: Quickdraw Okatsu

Yoen Dokufu Den : Okatsu Kyojo Tabi; aka Sexy Deadly Legend: Okatsu’s Epic Journey

Gincho Wataridori; aka Wandering Ginza Butterfly

Gincho Nagaremono Mesuneko Bakuchi; aka Wandering Ginza She-Cat Gambler

These films are beyond legendary, and have never been released on DVD. Some English titles may change by release date, but make no mistake that these films will be presented uncut in their original form -remastered for optimal viewing and listening enjoyment. This particular crop of films has allowed me to present two entire series (like we did with the two Inoshika Ocho films starring Reiko Ike), which was key in my decision to license them. I had chosen not to release the entire series of Girl Boss films because I felt that not all entries were as strong as Girl Boss Guerilla, but the two Butterfly films and the three Okatsu films are all really incredible movies, so it’s not a case of licensing them just to release a whole series; these films rock! Additionally, these will not be issued as box sets, but instead as individual discs (possibly at the same time) –affording the option of buying all at once or one at a time as your budget dictates.

In the meantime, you can whet your Pinky whistle by picking up the recently re-issued Sex & Fury, or pre-ordering the stand alone editions of Terrifying Girls’ High School: Lynch Law Classroom and Girl Boss Guerilla. I understand that there are still a few transparent editions of Teruo Ishii’s Female Yakuza Tale available, so snatch those up along with the recent releases of Screwed and Blind Beast Vs. Killer Dwarf.

Stay tuned for updates, and have a Pink day!”

Naked Pursuit (Kofun) (1968)

A man tries to rape a woman. The woman tries to escape. The woman loses her clothes in the process… And that’s all that happens in Naked Pursuit (“Naked Escape” would be a more suitable title don’t you think?). Sounds boring? Actually it isn’t. The film remains rather interesting from start to finish. The only real problem is that one god damn hill that kills the excitement every time we get there. Expect a lot of running up and rolling down on that hill. The rest works surprisingly well. Shot mostly in black and white and with almost no dialogue at all, the film forces the audience to think. Or that’s at least what the filmmakers are counting on. Keeping the camera close to the characters and yet not explaining their actions can be awfully fascinating when done right. Especially when the content is as thought provoking as it is here.

So, what’s this? Art with a touch of exploitation? Or a bad joke disguised as art. There’s a normal looking guy sexually assaulting an innocent girl who hardly fights back. As if she was secretly enjoying it. Everything is clean, almost romanticized. An average male moviegoers’ fantasy perhaps? In Japan at least? Exploitation producer Harry Novak who handled the theatrical US release certainly had his own idea of the films true identity. He filled the American version with non-existing dialogue and gave the the characters their voices, their thoughts. He made the film honest exploitation.

Screw the US version, the main interest of Naked Pursuit is its undefined nature. It’s hard to say whether this is exploitative art or artistic exploitation. Maybe just a rape fantasy. There may even lie a love story hidden underneath. Theories aside, it’s a technically well made movie. The cinematography is first grade, and the characters have as much depth as you want them to. It all depends on your willingness to believe the film is trying to say something of importance.

The Glamorous Life of Sachiko Hanai

Japanese sexploitation has come a long way down from the A-class studio productions to Z-grade students films. Sachiko Hanai however must be one of the best genre productions of the recent years. The production values are way below zero, but the film is funny as hell. A prostitute with a bullet in her head is on the run from a North Korean spy who’s after George W. Bush’s cloned finger!!! Can she hide from the deadly communist spy? Can she escape Mr. Presidents horny finger? And can she save the world from the most evil finger on the planet?

Too many sex scenes, yes, but luckily most of them are intentionally comic. Unfortunately a disgusting rape scene has been included as well and it’s totally out of place. Thankfully there’s only one of them, those related to Bush’s cloned finger don’t count… As mentioned, the budget is non-existent so don’t expect any 70’s kind of firework visuals. The leading actress (Emi Kuroda) however is unexpectedly cute and “innocent”. Definitely a good thing in my books. And when you’re just about to get tired of her, Mr. George W. Bush steps in and steals the show. I saw the film in a sold out screening and it was an absolute laugh riot, especially the Bush scenes…

February 18, 2007 update (posts merged)

Prisoner no. 07 Reina

Modern and modest women in prison stuff. Cheap production but thankfully doesn’t look as amateurish as some of these films. Not a terrible movie but there isn’t too much to get exited about. Violence is low level, characters are nothing special and surprisingly the female inmates even keep their clothes on most of the time. At least the guards play battle royale with them whenever they have free time… which leads to some entertaining scenes, but the idea is much better than the actual execution. One music cue is also especially effective, but as whole the production lacks passion. Decent one view but nothing more.
