‘where the buffaloes roam’ (the early eighties hunter movie) is generally dismissed as appalling by critics (and said to be the reason why fear and loathing wasnt attempted for another whole decade!) but ive got it and watched it with thompson fans and we all love it! because it reflects thompsons writing career a lot better because it involves more politics which is really where he excelled. bill murray is fantastic as hunter as well, some people prefer it to johnny depp whos a bit OTT but great to watch.
whats this about a commentary and documentaries? the fear and loathing dvd in england is just the movie, is it different in america? I downloaded ‘breakfast with hunter’ documentary off the internet and thats fantastic. it follows hunter over a year long period during which hes about to be put on trial for DUI, celebrating the 25th anniversary of fear and loathing and also covers the making of the movie. the bit where he kicks alex cox out of his house for trying to use cartoons in his proposed version of the movie is hilarious!
f+l in las vegas is a must read book, but check out his ‘gonzo paper’ volumes aswell, theres real gems in those collections. ‘hells angels’ is fantastic aswell and seems to capture the exact moment when hunter breaks free of traditional journalism and starts creating gonzo writing
Actually, Thompson really excelled in sprots journalism. He had a weekly article in Sports Illustrated that was widely read. I am certain that most of his readers had no idea that he was a drugged out hippie with a .44 magnum just waitin’ to blow his freakin’ head off!
yeah he started, and ended, as a sports journo but the gonzo papers show great insight in politics and his involvement with the democrat presedential candidates throughout the seventies and eighties aswell. also, i read one of his espn columns from a few months before his death and he was meant to be talking about monday night football but instead went off on one about george bush for the whole article! i heard his sports writing is collected in ‘great shark hunt’, havent got that one

maybe that’s why democrat presidential candidates lost by overwhelming percentages in the 70’s and 80’s. With exception to Carter(the worst pres. in u.s. history)the dems didn’t have a snowball’s chance in hell of winning an election. “mr. gorbechev, tear down this wall!”
