I forget who, but some people on this board were talking about the movie ‘Elephant’, so I checked out the trailer and then went to go see it at our local pretencious art house theater (Providence has a good number of those). It was…pretty intense at the end. I’m not quite sure what to think of it to be honest, but it definately wasn’t bad.
Anybody else seen it? I’d really like to discuss some parts with other people.
I really want to. Wasn’t it done off-the-cuff, with no script or anything? I heard it was good, but not Palme d’or good.(It won).
I still haven’t seen it. The reason that it’s supposed to be so good is because it’s realistic, and they didn’t glorify the violence at all. Did this seem true? Is it true that there isn’t any music during the shooting, it’s all just them, doin’ their thang, so to speak? I think that could be really interesting.
Well, the way the entire movie was set up was that it didn’t follow your basic plot outline (You know…those triangle things you learn about in english class). It was almost entirely setting the stage to show you ‘this is just a normal, average day at any average high school.’ So at times it was…uhh…slow. Watching a character walk from the entrance of the school to the dark room simply in order to develop the pictures he took, for a good 15 minutes solid, seemed to me a little drawn out. The movie was only an hour and 20 minutes, but probably a 45 or 50 minutes of it was literally watching the students they introduced to you walk around campus or play piano or do just average school things.
But at the same time, that made it all the more effective and much less dramatic and much more realistic when they had two kids go in and start blowing everyone away. It was pretty realistic in a lot of ways. You were introduced to your basic characters who, even though you don’t get to know that well, are just like kids you’d know from your high school. Surprisingly, the characters aren’t completely flat and 2 dimensional either–they could have pulled any punch of kids off the street, told them to be in this movie and just be themselves, and it would have been the same thing. So in a lot of ways, I liked how it was set up, but simultaniously, lets face it. I’m an American teenager with undiagnosed ADD–there was more than one scene where I wanted to stand up and yell ‘ALRIGHT ALREADY WE CAN SEE HE’S WALKING ACROSS CAMPUS! WE CAN SEE THIS KID IS TRYING TO PRACTICE HIS PIANO FOR A GOOD 20 MINUTES!’ But thats just me. All in all, in retrospect, it was a pretty good film. Unsettling is a good way to describe it.
this was on my movie list, which is growing pretty big thanks to this forum. I REALLY want to see this movie. I’ll try to see it over the break.
Has anyone seen House of Sand and Fog? that looks really good.
i really want to see Elephant. i saw the trailer when i saw American Splendor (another great movie), and thought it looked great. i dont know if it is coming out at a theatre near me, not all independent movies do. the reason why some people are calling Elephant exploitative is because there is not much of a backstory to the villians and their motives are never fully revealed-thats what i heard
No, thats not entirely true. You see at least one of the killers getting picked on by some “asshole jocks”. But in general the characters in the entire movie don’t really have back stories. You’re given a glimpse, lets say, 10 minutes of their day during this fateful day at their high school right before the shooting happens.
I think that’s cool, because why should it be a movie about them? Aren’t those type of people supposed to be the ones “we never really knew”? Plus it’s good because they don’t go overboard with trying to explain why they end up killing people. (I.E: Entertainment, ect).
Now people are going to start shooting little kids  to have movies about them made. My theory is, and starkey basically came up with this one, that Hitler killed the Jews and shit because he wanted to be famous. He is, after all, the second most written about person of all time. And think of all the WWII movies that wouldn’t have been made if it weren’t for Hitler. What a good idea. The guy who’s the most written about pulled the same trick. He actually made up a bunch of shit to be famous, and started a huge cult based on his lies. He, ladies and gentlemen, is Jesus H. Christ.
Just a note: I hate Hitler and Jesus and don’t condone any of their behavior. But hey, what works works.  :’(
Just a note, both these people hated Jews, so if you wanna be famous, well… you get the idea.
Just a note: I love the Jewish Community.

Jesus hated Jews? What the fuck are you talking about? Jesus was a jew, numbnuts!!! Jesus even said that the Jews were God’s chosen people and would have first place in heaven, or did u forgot that in bible class? Comparing Hitler to Jesus is fuckin retarded, one of them hated the world and the other loved the world. Do you think Jesus would have done all of those so-called miracles if he hated everybody, including the jews? NO
and Hitler might have wanted to be famous, but i doubt that was his first priority. Hitler was sad about the loss of WW1 and wanted to strike back in any way he could, which was trying to take over Europe and killing many Jews. Hitler probably also had some kind of inferiority complex, if he could have that much hate for one group of people

thats a nice way to get out of it, but still that was something pretty fuckin stupid to say. sorry, i didnt know if u were joking or being a stupid asshole-maybe both.
I’m very sorry if i offended you, but you can’t honestly believe that i really thought that. How could Jesus hate jews, he was a jew. If it’s really that offensive i’ll be glad to take it down, but i’m guessing your avator has offended more people than my obviously sarcastic over the top post.

ANYWAY, Elephant looks really good. I really like the trailor. I’ve watched it like six times. It doesn’t look like it’s coming to a “Theatre near me” anytime soon, so i’m probably going to have to wait for rental. I might just up-and buy it, because i’ve heard so many good things.
I’ve had to do that with some indie films before…I either miss them when they’re in the art house theaters around here (for what, all of, a week?) or they never come out at all. I’m wondering if I’m gonna have to do that with the Triplets of Belleville…I really wanna see it, but it came out over a month ago, so that doesn’t bode well concerning theater viewings…
