Mostly positive
Well I’m reassuring myself a bit by this conclusion : All the genre films presented at Cannes by great directors have been snobbed, like the last Park Chan Wook and Johnnie To to name quite a few.
"the picture is a completely distinctive piece of American pop art with a strong Euro flavor…"
HOLY SHIT. My excitement level just jumped up like crazy. Fuck yeah. Could Basterds really be as good or even better than the all-mighty Kill Bill!!! Kill Bill was american pop art with a strong asian flavor…
Don’t be so emotional… If quentin say its a masterpiece, it is a masterpiece…
you guys haven’t seen the movie and you know that most critics are bullshit…
After you see the movie, and it really is mastershit or masterpiece, (I think it’s gonna be a masterpiece of course) than be emotional but not right now when the only things we have are: trailer (great), clips (perfect clips), a few positive reviews and few bad ones…
For now let’s just wait for the big premiere tonight and see what’s gonna happen next.
I’m excited now. Let’s be honest, most of the people who write reviews nowadays are people who stumbled into the job, not people who have studied film. I’m interested to say what Ebert says about the film, he’s got about the best perspective of any critic I know. Look at some of the critics that have posted reviews, not exactly reputable sites in terms of film critique. Let’s no lose our heads over a few negative reviews who seemed to be expecting Pulp Fiction WWII.

No, it’s not. He could say his shit smells like rosé wine, but would we have to agree?
Also, Noir? I think Ebert will crucify it. That’s my prediction.
And now I see there are really good reviews so everything is OK!! haha
This review thing really is like being on an innertube in a stormy ocean. Youre riding a huge wave then you get thrown into a huge dip. Then come back up again.
The best thing to do is ignore every review, glowing or scathing. Dont get too worked up.
I don’t know what is the big deal with Ebert. Sure he likes QT, but seriously he has written some lame reviews those recent years.
But yeah, I can’t deny those reviews make me a bit worried. Thats’ a shame because those clips are great.

I don’t know about that. He’s a fan of Quentin’s style, that’s for sure. A lot of people have complained that it’s light on the action, but Ebert prefered Vol 2 to 1 and absolutely loved Jackie Brown so I’m thinking he might enjoy it.

It’s all personal taste. He enjoys movies you may not like as you may enjoy movies he may not like. But unlike most critics who’ve got tunnel vision and usually stay close to a specific type of film, he’s got a far more vast perspective of what’s good and what isn’t. He comes from about the most creative, adventurous and exciting time in cinema, the 1970’s and Quentin’s style is almost an amalgam of a lot of those same filmmakers so it’s not hard to see why Ebert enjoys his work.
the german “Abendzeitung” just posted a very positive and very well written review, it can also be found in the “Tarantino does cannes” thread.

(Positive) But as I thought might be a problem, the contrast of tones seems to be out of place sometimes.
An early round up
Negative

One you filed under “negative” I would call “mixed”, but anyway…
so far it’s
10 positive
8 negative
3 mixed
They weren’t all of them. I rounded up the ones I had. There are others out there, but the reaction has been very split down the middle.
Straight down the middle: http://uk.rottentomatoes.com/m/inglourious_basterds/
lol down the middle, I love it!
I guess that’s what happens when you take the critics’ favourite genre - the war movie - and turn it into something that hasn’t been done before - some of them get pissed.

And might not be about getting pissed. Obviously that’s biased.
Some get pissed, many don’t like it, anyway…the negative reactions seem only natural to me. Biased? I have a good impression now of how the movie will play out, and I must say I like what I am hearing very much.
Many of the negative points from the critics are positive points for me.
