LOL. But then it IS America. World’s biggest film industry and all that. Least us lot in Britain (or England, whatever) aren’t FAT.
So for good Britishness I’d have to recommend…
Why is when we say something good about america you always throw in the Fat card? but your right there are some walking heart attacks waiting to happen but I still love america.
Hail America!
Oh so there are actual fat people? I was beginning to think it was just this myth. Like with the English we suposedly have yellow teeth, wear funky top hats, and drink tea alot.
I’m guilty of the latter…and top hats ARE funky. But not for me.
I just watch Borat and I get a nice introspective in the US ;D
Yeah it is the sterotype that brits have huge teeth and say “Gov’nah!” and drink tea…people are so small minded sometimes
Eh sorry horse Neil Jordan is an IRISH director. While I know that the film was financed by English money, the nationality of the director is the real indicator for me. It always happens when someone Irish is successful We’re a different race of people and an independant country! Dont take our best film away from us…we need it!
There’s not much to choose from cos our industry is shit (although an Irish film ONCE just won the audience award at sundance ;D)
My Left Foot: The Story of Christy Brown (1989) - Jim Sheridan
Michael Collins (1996) - Neil Jordan
Interview with the Vampire (1994) - Neil Jordan
The Crying Game (1992) - Neil Jordan
I Went Down (1997) - Paddy Breathnach
We’ve sort of adopted John Boorman who made the awesome Point Blank (1967) and Deliverance (1972). Very dubious indeed fuck it while i’m at it ill claim John ford on the grounds of his irish American ancestry!
Thats about the best we have to offer but hopefully I’ll change that in a few years myself!
oh yeah forgot about Grand Theft Parsons (David Caffrey, 2003) none other than QT mentioned in the credits too.
The stereo types are true Americans are fat, The English do drink tea and Say GUV-nah and us Irish are drunks who fight all the time. Stereotypes are surprisingly accurate they make things easier!
I DID not know Neil Jordan was Irish… :o
You learn something new everyday…

well, we can always pull the bad teeth card.
Yeah lol, we mentioned the teeth thing…man whats that about anyway? So untrue. Austin Powers didn’t do us Brits that much did he? Damn him! ;D
I have pretty good teeth. Not right at the moment as I just had some ice-cream. But USUALLY I have pretty good teeth.
lol, that reminds me (in a strange sort of way). A friend of mine went over to America and asked for a packet of fags in a shop. Now, over here fags mean a packet of cigarettes. Over THERE, completely different meaning lol. The guy at the counter DIDN’T appreicate the request

Yeah, we say that in Oz too. “Can I bum a fag, mate?” But it doesn’t quite translate to the US. Australia ended up with a lot of British slang as well as slang of our own, but the US managed to destroy all proof that they were ever of British ancestry.
Instead you should say “Got a death stick mate?”

lol, but come to think of it, Burroughs called cigarettes fags in Junky. Maybe it used to be used in the USA in the fifties, but now no one uses it. Like Croaker and Gat.

germany:
-gegen die wand (head on) by fatih akin
-m - eine stadt sucht einen mörder ( m - murderers among us) by fritz lang
-fitzcarraldo by werner herzog
For France, I would go for the samourai, le doulos or the second breath from Jean-Pierre Melville

i watched a movie called deadlock (by roland klick) a few days ago… damn… that movie was fantastic, kinda pretty nihilistic and psychedelic neo-italo western / thriller … it’s worth to watch it…
Not to brag but The Lord of The rings trilogy was made in my country.

Once Were Warriors is a better example of New Zealand cinema. And The Piano and Brain Dead. Never really cared much for Lord of the Rings. They’re good, but not great.

I missed this when it was posted. One of my top ten favourite films of all time. Fatih Akin is a fantastic storyteller.
