2009 - Track Your Films

Have you seen Brick by Rian Johnson, his first feature before The Brothers Bloom ? You have to see it, I really loved it. Perfect cast, especially Joseph Gordon-Levitt (I really love him as an actor) and beautifully shot. I can’t wait to see his next feature.

I just watched Brick for the first time a couple of days ago. Some parts are a little confusing ,but overall I thought it was really good.

So you like Adrien Brody too huh? Cool.

No, I was saying because it’s going to be awful.

You, sir, are a meany.

Why, just look at how mopy you’ve made Mr. Brody…

I’d be very surprised if he were capable of playing another whiney sad-sack ever again.

I hope you’re happy, mister…

Poor, poor retarded Adrien Brody.

The Room - 5/5

After making it’s Canadian theatrical premiere and receiving recent recognition for that event my friends and I settled down last night at 3 am after our party winded down and watched this masterful, passionate, hopelessly awful, self-masturbating, narcissism-filled and completely enjoyable film. Mabe the substances dominating our nervous systems helped the enjoyment but I’d seen half before sober and enjoyed it just as much. Tommy Wiseau is either the world’s biggest dumbass or the greatest performance artist/prankster of all time. Not only is the film a haunting look into how deadly serious a failed artist can take himself but the extras (an interview with Wiseau and the mundane yet oddly hypnotic behind-the-scenes featurette) are also an awesomely absurd look into what goes through the mind of someone gone mad.

Even more interesting than the film is Wiseau himself as nothing is known about him or his past and he just appeared on the scene with 7 million dollars with his script in hand and made this film. The things he says in his interviews might give insight into where this guy comes from.

“It’s not a room, it’s THE Room.”

"This movie needs to be watched more than once because there are so many issues in it like relationships, love, betrayal, sex and drugs."

Also retardedly bizarre is the way this was filmed. Two formats were used: an HD camera and a 35 mm camera. Wiseau had them mounted onto one cart, side by side like some two headed camera beast and shot the same scenes with two different cameras running at the same thing. There was no alternating between the two…it was just the same shot…on both cameras…filmed at the same time…

My favorite quote from the film:

“How’s work going, Johnny?”

“Oh, it’s good, we got a few new clients today. Anyway, how’s your sex life?”

The International - 2.5/5

This movie isn’t bad. It isn’t poorly made. Aside from Naomi Watts the actors all deliver moderatley good performances. But it doesn’t make anything of itself. It’s flat, a coke with no bubbles. One tone carried over it’s two hour running time. Even the big gun fight, where most filmmakers would excell, is just as flat as anything else that happens after or happened before. Nothing special, with more flaws than atributes, and a waste of my time.

The Getaway - 5/5 (re-re-watch)

Just as good now as it was two days ago.

What is it about The Getaway you like so much?

I thought it lacked what other Peckinpah films had.

To be honest I can’t really say. I don’t really wanna say or try to explain it either, like if I try to explain it it’ll go away or something. I just really like it.

It certainly isn’t his best movie, I don’t think a whole lot of him went into making it, like he took it on as a job job and not a passion project job. But it does have a lot of cool shit that makes up for the lack luster script. Steve McQueen rocks, what a cool SOB. The action and editing is typicly on par with some of Sam’s best movies. Plus it’s a heist movie, a couple on the run movie, and a border town type of movie (love those). I guess I’m just charmed by it.

The Getaway is one of my favorites. Similar at times to Point Blank in that art-house meets gritty urban tale of violence feel, it’s easily one of my favorites from Peckinpah that I’ve seen. Awesome cast, intense action/violence with a lot of flashes from Peckinpah’s previous work. Just an all around great film in my opinion.

Gomorra - I’ll probably be sitting down to write a review later, but my first impressions: A dark and unsettling look at modern crime. Incredibly harsh, overbearing, bleak and sometimes depressing. No matter what, the film definitely leaves its mark on you.

THE GETAWAY!

I got lucky enough to catch that movie (Gomorra) in a theater. Really dug it, although it was really fucking bleak at times, to the point where it was rarely pleasent to view the movie. Effective I guess is the word.

Out of the Blue - 5/5

Still the top of the heap. A film about punk rock that is just as dirty, brilliant, nihilistic and disillusioned as the music. Linda Manz delivers a performance greater than most and the amazing part about it is she was around 13 at the time. Dennis Hopper is also awesome both in front and behind the camera. Especially in the scene where his character is welcomed home by a big party after being in prison for killing a bus load of kids and one of the victims father shows up. This film is the definition of harsh, raw and depressing.

This is true, some parts in the script are very clear, that could be the main flaw. But overall the actors are great, so is the cinematography and even more great, the very idea of moving a film noir/hardboiled atmosphere into a teenage highschool frame.

Just saw Eddie Presley, and man if i am not stil crying.

Magnolia - 5/5

Is it really good, or did it just make you all emotional? Always wanted to see it but have held it off for fear of not liking it.

Love this fucking movie! Easily in my top ten.

Yeah, Magnolia rules everything. Talk about a film with a pulse.
