Who Is Stuntman Mike?

We all know QT inserts many aspects of himself and his life within his films/scripts. He has done that also regarding Stuntman Mike which I will use as further evidence foy my earlier take/post on who Stuntman Mike is:

When QT was having problems (both in his work and life), he created an acting CV trying to make it look impressive by writing that he appeared in Jean-Luc Godard’s King Lear as he thought nobody in Hollywood would have heard of that director. He also said he appeared in Dawn of the Dead as he thought he looked a bit like one of the bikers.

I feel Stuntman Mike does this very thing as I’ve already discussed.

Ify, I think all of QTs characters are part of him. I also thought that Stuntman Mike represents QT in another way: Remember when Eli Roth is making fun of him at the bar for looking like a guy from the 70s? Well, I took that as QT showing that hes alot like Stuntman Mike in the way hes sort of stuck in that period which we see in his films alot. Stuntman Mike being killed off at the end might be a way of QT killing off the whole retro 70s thing hes known for. Sort of like when The Bride killed all the Crazy 88s who were dressed in the trademark black n white QT suits. It was his way of departing from the crime films. I doubt we will see those suits again in any of his future movies.

Whats his next film going to be? A WW2 period film.

Another thing I noticed was at the beginning of Death Proof, Jungle Julia is smoking pot and theres the Soldier Blue poster on her wall. I kind of felt that it represented the direction QT is headed in genre/style wise. Or where he wants to go with his films.

Haha, so Quentin as Bill and now Quentin as Mike. Interesting stuff.

How do you know he’s killed off his trademark black and white suits? And shit yeah, I just realised, DP is the only QT film where one or more of the lead characters don’t wear a variation of the black and white suit. Damn. It would be a shame.

Theres no way of knowing it for sure. Just my theory. I think with each of his films he wants to transcend his last one in some way.

I have this feeling hes going to start doing genre movies that are period pieces now. Hes not going to do the modern stuff anymore. At least not for awhile.

“I have to bring those [life] experiences with me. I’m not there unless I bring that on with me and make that work inside my material. If I’m not, then you could send a robot out there. If I was writing The Guns of the Navarone, alright, and then right at the beginning of writing it I break up with my girlfriend, who I’m like madly in love with and then my heart is shattered, alright, that’s got to work into it. Now, the story is still about a bunch of commandos going to blow up a couple of cannons, alright, but that pain that I’m feeling has got to find it’s way into the story or else, what am I doing?”

From the Charlie Rose Pulp interview. There it is.

I wish he would stick to what I feel he does best, crime drama. I cant get excited about his other projects the way I can about crime fiction because thats what I like and I think he does it so well. Its what made me such a fan. There is nothing wrong with a director or writer sticking with one genre. It makes me sad to thnk he is doing a war movie next because I dont like movies about war. There are a few I have watched that I liked but none are the kinda movies that I can watch again and again. Im sure QT will change that but when I hear war epic I think "YEESH"! It like asking QT to do a Space epic, it seems like a square peg trying to fit in a round hole.

Please go back to crime drama QT!!! Please!!?? The good ol boy movie would even be cool. Im depressed now.

Well the thing is, if he kept on making films within the crime genre, people would say he isn’t a varied enough director to be considered truly great. By expanding his pallette, he is showing people that he can make great films no matter what genre. Furthermore, IB will be his man on a mission movie. Who’s to say we’ll get to see any actual war action?

Yeah. It’s like people call The Great Escape and Dirty Dozen war movies, though I don’t remember any war scenes about them. I guess we’re gonna see more of commando-action, like Dirty Dozen

This is where I cant agree with you. By saying that youre basically admitting that you dont accept anything QT does other than crime films. Im the exact opposite. I hope he NEVER does another crime film. Im so tired of the whole badass gangster genre at this point. Also, QT rules that genre. Hes the best in it. No need to keep doing them anyway.

Directors should explore diff genres. Just sticking to one genre is a waste of a career and also it really shows how limited you are talent wise.

A QT War film is going to be awesome. You know its not going to be a straight forward war film. QT is making it. Its prob going to be like 5 subgenres inside the Men on a Mission subgenre. I cant wait to see how he does it!!

Im picturing like a Dirty Dozen meets Reservoir Dogs meets A Spaghetti Western set in WW2. Too cool.

Also, just think about the soundtrack to this epic. Its prob going to have more great music than Kill Bill Vol 1 and 2!!

agreed 100%

ok , i’m not sure why i took long to ask this question and haven’t seen much discussion on it surprisingly but anyway here goes…

Right before he gets shot, Stuntman Mike tells the second group of girls ‘adios’ as if he was not going to kill them after all. what do think of this? i have a few theories…

  1. when he runs off the side of the road he can’t chase them anymore so he acts like it was nothing (just like the b&w foot fetish scene ) so he can get away with it.

  2. he has already ‘shot his goo’ with the high speed pursuit and is done with them.

  3. same as 2. but he might come back for them at another time more prepared.

  4. he realises these girls are baddass and tries to back out before it’s too late.

and the most out there one:

  5. he really was ‘just playing around’ because this Stuntman Mike isn’t the ‘slasher’ Mike - the second half of Death Proof doesn’t really play like a slasher/horror movie.

    What do you think?

I think 1 or/and 3

Theres alot of good theories there.

One detail that also comes into play is that he has the bottle of whiskey in his glove compartment. If he was going to go for one of those head on collisions he wouldnt have it in there. So he mustve just been planning to knock them off the road. I think after Zoe flew into the woods, he mustve shot his goo by then.

The more you think about it, the more all these little ideas come up. Just like all of QTs movies.

My theory on his scar is that it wasnt from a stunt/car accident at all. I think he got it from trying to rape a girl and she slashed his face. It may have even been the love of his life that betrayed him and set him off to become a psycho killer.

Notice how when hes talking to Pam and the other girls, he says:

Mike: "…that was before I cut myself shaving…"

Pam: "Awww, I like it"

Mike (sarcastically): “Well aint you so sweet you make sugar taste just like salt.”

interesting, I hadn’t thought of that before

Well look at Martin Scorsese (bad example) or Alfred Hitchcock. No one thinks theyre hacks because they did what they do best. But the main reason for me, and its a selfish reason, is that I love Crime Drama and Horror. Besides comedy and old Westerns I dont like to watch much else. I guess IB could be cool but I guess Ive grown use to the dumb action films of recent years. I like plot and character development. Both are usually missing from war and action flicks. But.... I dont think I need worry because this project isnt going anywhere for a long time.

Another weird thing I thought of in regards to the whole sexual role the car crashes played is:

Mike gets off on car crashes or people dying from his car crashes. When he crashes into the second set of girls and Zoe flies into the woods, he has shot his goo. His dick isnt hard anymore. Thus making him vulnerable to attack. Then Kim shoots him and he has to flee. Hes spent at that point. A limp dick. When the girls beat him up, they are beating a limp dick. Hows that for a sexual metaphor!
I think Stuntman has a very tiny penis. Seeing all these gorgeous chicks makes him frustrated because of his weiner problem. Hence, he kills them because of his frustration.
ur right! one of the chicks in the film says it too! bout the little dick! i dont remembr the exact line but its the second part im talking bout! he is a psycho! so he kills them!

Recently after seeing DP on DVD many times - I’ve noticed some similarities between Stuntman Mike and a movie character from an obscure 70s film that you can see in that bundle that has like 50 movies. I saw it a long time ago, I beleive it’s called “Naked Massacre” - here’s a link of the dvd I’m talking about - I don’t have it anymore:

<LINK_TEXT text=“http://cgi.ebay.com/50-CHILLING-MOVIES- … dZViewItem”>http://cgi.ebay.com/50-CHILLING-MOVIES-TERROR-WEIRD-STRANGE-DVD-R-RATED-NEW_W0QQitemZ260163636660QQihZ016QQcategoryZ617QQssPageNameZWDVWQQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem</LINK_TEXT>

Anyway it’s about a guy with an anti-female rage. I mean he rapes them murders them in grusome fashion, with a knife. And this intention reminded me of Stuntman Mike, who is basically the same - only he does it with a car. It’s a brutal film, I mean very explicit. Here’s more info on it, not that I’m connecting it to DP, but Stuntman reminds me of “The Naked Massacre” character. Here’s more on the movie:

Naked Massacre aka Born For Hell(1976)

The film is only available in the dvd pack above.

my theory:

i think he wasn’t even a stuntman at all… he was obsessed with being a stuntman and his girlfriend left him because of this obsession… when he was doing his first stunt he failed, that’s where he gets his scar from… he started whining and acting like a silly biatch (like he did when he got shot at the end of death proof) so the director didn’t chose him for the role as a stuntman because mike was always afraid of getting hurt… then he had a car acciden’t and he found out that the only way he’s not afraid of doin stunts is when he’s killin women by the way, that makes him jerking off (he was sexualy frustrated after failing as a stuntman and as a lover)…
