Quentin Tarantino and Robert Rodriguez have always paid homage to their favorite film genres in their movies. Now they’ve actually recreated their own experiences watching low-budget horror and action films as double features in cheap movie houses.
Rodriguez’s Planet Terror and Tarantino’s Death Proof, shown together as part of the Grindhouse experience, are complete with trailers for fake movies they created before each feature. They’ve even digitally scratched up the films so that they look like cheap ’70s prints. Incidentally, Planet Terror is about a stripper with a machine gun for a leg taking out zombies, while Death Proof has lovely ladies turning the tables on a murderous road stalker.
The Wave: Robert, how would you feel if Death Proof gets the Oscar nomination, but Planet Terror is snubbed?
Robert Rodriguez: Oh, that would be great. I produced both movies so that would be fine. It’s not really a competition. I was trying to make the best movie I could for Quentin’s theater. When I’d go see movies at his theater, he would show double features with trailers in between. I just thought, “We’ve got to recreate this experience for people, and we need to make the ultimate double feature for your own theater.â€
