This is NOT Mad Max Fury Road

#1

this is a rough draft of an intro to a post-apocalyptic movie script I wrote once. This is version 2 of that draft.

INT. LIVING ROOM - DAY

We see the lower half of a MAN walking past a running

television and then sitting down on a sofa with his back

turned to us. There is a news program running on TV.

ANCHORWOMAN

We’re interrupting our regular

program for an urgent report on

Africa. What was assumed to be a

series of earthquakes this morning,

turned out to be a series of atomic

explosions. According to an NSA

spokesman, a total number of 5

consecutive detonations have taken

place in the Republic of Zaire.

A map is being shown with bomb sites marked with x-es

ANCHORWOMAN

Two explosions happened at 4.30

a.m. This morning GMT in Zaire,

followed by 3 others some miles

further east. Experts from the NSA,

CIA, the Pentagon an dthe IAEO

dismissed early speculation of

earthquakes. It is now official

that these 5 nuclear explosions

have possibly devastated an eare

the size of Texas, turning

everything between the Sahel belt

and the Republic of Botswana into

nuclear wasteland. The radioactive

clouds are said to be spreading

radially, thus increasing the

amount of land being made lifeless

for the next 100 years or so, an

expert from the International

Atomic Energy Organisation said.

We’re now turning back to our

regular program. We’re keeping you

up to date on this terrible

incident in 30 minutes with video

coverage. Tracy Nichols, CNN.

The MAN switches the TV off. We now see he’s holding a bottle

of vodka in his right hand.

MAN (IN RUSSIAN)

And the other 2 bombs?

FADE TO BLACK.

EXT. SHANGHAI - MORNING

We fly over Shanghai’s ultra-modern city skyline while we

hear a WOMAN speaking in a voice-over that sounds like radio.

WOMAN (V.O.)

… Africa. Exactly 20 years since

the terrible nuclear incidents in

Zaire, experts say the results may

not show just yet. Back in summer

2006, 7 nuclear bombs, each 15

times the power of the infamous

bomb used in Hiroshima in the

second World War, exploded in the

Kongo Basin. Today, the entire

Middle and South Africa, including

surrounding seas, are contaminated,

the more inland areas devastated,

burned and deserted. Yet, signs of

new life seem to arrive from what

historians now call Wasteland

Africa. But this life seems not to

be what one would expect…

INT. OFFICE - DAY

A bright offic ein a tall highrise building in Shanghai. We

see a young WOMAN sitting opposite a MAN, behind a desk. The

WOMAN is typing on her laptop computer. Behind her, we see a

futuristically looking helicopter flying by.

WOMAN

My husband just came back, after 20

years of suffering in the Wasteland

of Africa, I assume you knew?

MAN

Yes I’ve heard that story. How is

he?

WOMAN

He is in hospital of course. He’s

terribly contaminated and very

sick. Yet while they are treating

him, he is speaking his experience

into a microphone to record them

for a diary e-book.

Seems like he saw everything,

escaped and then spent 20 years

getting out of there. He told me,

there’s a war being waged there,

one we don’t know of, one we can’t

see, for a reason we can only guess

FADE TO BLACK.

EXT. AFRICAN DESERT - NUCLEAR TWILIGHT

…our Camera speeds over the vast spaces of african desert.

No trees, no green, no life can be seen. Only scorched earth

and sand and black stones.

a black, worn out army boot.

Sounds cool and all, but couldn’t you do better than Keanu Reeves, even if it is your first film?

lets say Reeves is the placeholder here ;_)

#4

wow I couldn’t remember I actually wrote this…

#5

It’s pretty good. Feels like I’m watching a movie. Yeah, I know pretty obvious, but not all scripts can do that. Is this going to be some action film? It sure looks like it with the boot and all.

However, it feels a bit cheesy. Good written, but pretty standard action/catastrophe movie intro.

#6

I like the pace and the writing. good one Seb.
