The Most Visually Stunning Films You've Seen?

oh shit - how could we all forget:

Singin´ in the Rain

Citizen Dog. A Thaiwanese film. I didn’t like it much(although I seemed to be the only one at the festival where I saw it) but it wás visually stunning…

yet another SPOILER for IFY - The “singing in the Rain” scene in Clockwork was very stunning. I liked the little red ball that he would bounce and then ultimately stuffed in the old lady’s mouth prior to raping her. HOW’S THAT FOR A SPOILER!

Heaven’s Gates dance scenes alone makes it a great visual movie.

Vertigo was another good one.

I was the first to mention it in this thread.

I think…

One of the first movies that I ever saw that made me appreciate it as an art was The Color of Money. It is one of Martin Scorsese’s lesser-appreciated films, yet its cinematography is absolutely superb. The lighting, the use of colors in an otherwise colorless atmosphere, the attention to detail - all of it absolutely stunning. From the beginning of the film with the subtle nuances like the amber glass of whiskey to the pool shots that were lighted with such genius. You don’t have to be an expert to know that Scorsese’s work is very well thought out and almost “gracefull”. The Color of Money was the first movie that made me fully appreciate film as more than just a quick entertainment fix.

Clockwork orange, in particular the milk bar scenes.

Lawrence of Arabia…

Heat/Collateral - anything by Mann!

Blow-out

Revolver (sucks overall though!)

Raging Bull

400 blows

Once Upon A Time in the West

Butch Cassidy & The Sundance Kid

Kill Bill

Schindlers List

Citizen Kane

Boogie Nights

These are based on the overall use of angles, camera movement and framing. not really just the beauty of the image cause then all the Chris Doyle/Wong Kar Wei collaborations would be up there!

sin city.

Steamboy - there was a little bit of a clash between the characters and the background but other then that it looked as good as you’d expect considering it took so long to make… (A total of eight years was spent for the making of the film.)

on the graphic side of things there’s stuff like the final fantasy 7 film…

Heat/Collateral - anything by Mann!

In Mann movies, he has this artificial “glow” around someone. It seems very fake when he uses it, the character doesn’t seem to be in that scene. It seems like he was digitally placed in or something. Also, it makes the character look older than they are as the hair often turns a greyish colour. I don’t know if it’s to create a specific feeling or it’s a commentary on the character, but it doesn’t look good at all. This is most prominant when he shows De Niro’s character in Heat and Cruise’s character in Collateral.

Fanny & Alexander is one of the most beautiful films I’ve ever seen, the colors, camera placement and cool fuckin’ close ups is all perfect. I love how he moves the camera in F&A. the movie is soo fucking creepy yet funny. this one of the greatest films ever. Bergman is a master.

Yeah, that’s why it is great, because he’s actually there.

I can’t remember how Heat looks like but Collateral indeed looks jaw dropping. The script is somewhat crap but but the techical excellence makes the film overall very good.

300 I found pretty ugly. Not very surprising, though. Snyder’s previous film, Dawn of the Dead remake, looked even worse.

Some visual perfection from Lily Chou-Chou

I LOVE that last one, amazing!

It’s actually the lack of artificial light that gives it that look. Yeah, there are some scenes where he has a blue or green light to signify something (I.E. The scene in Heat where De Niro stands and looks out of the window into the ocean) but I’m not sure if thats what you were referring to or not, if so, I could see how someone wouldn’t like it.

I’m just happy Mann can get color into a scene and make it look nice without using tints like Soderbergh did in Traffic.

Anyway, has anyone mentioned ‘Days of Heaven’

To this day I still enjoy old Miami Vice re-runs…Michael Mann has a way about his work that is very unique - and here we are twenty years later and the episodes that I used to watch as a kid are still very entertaining and other than the wardrobes…they are still fairly cutting edge. These shows like CSI are bullshit compared to Miami Vice…and I whole-heartedly believe that Michael Mann is responsible for television advancing to the next level. As far as his movies go, I haven’t ever really enjoyed one of them. I guess Heat was OK, but Id have to say that the stellar cast was responsible for that. Just my opinion.
