The High Definition Thread

Oh yeah, exactly. That’s what I meant. The only real reason I bought it is that I didn’t have a DVD copy and it cost the same as a copy on DVD. I figured beforehand that it wouldn’t be a too noticable improvement. But I didn’t particularly care. I want Casino Royale though. I want something to show me the difference.

I have fucking HD everything. lol.

The Casino Royale is so fucking cool…that’s the only way to watch it.

honestly…I just got it on netflix last week and I was totally blown away. It is the very best James Bond movie - PERIOD.

well most movie theaters I know don’t get close to what it might be watching something on high definition equipment (big screen, FullHD, surround sound)… most theaters i know still have horrible quality non-HD projection, mostly bad sound, smelly chairs… etc…

exactly

I have a nice 32" HDTV and a Blueray…my OWN couch and clean smelling air. Can’t beat that. The added bonus is that I can watch in my underwear.

So the cinemas in Germany don’t have surround sound? WOW. In that case, it probably might be better for you to stay at home.

I don’t think any high definition format is better than going to watch a film at a cinema, certainly not here in the UK, where our screen are large and the great surround sound form an essential movie-going experience you simply cannot get in your home. The city I went to University in even had a digital cinema -apart from the IMAX it is still unsurpassed!

For example, I still try to re-create the experience I had watching Casino Royale, Revenge of the Sith and Kill Bill in my sitting room, where I have a HDTV and 5.1 surround sound, but I have yet to reach that experience. What’s more, surrond sound is not the be all and end all of having a great film experience (even though it may hurt me to say it). One of my cinema highlights was watching The Godfather in Dolby Digital stereo over a year ago. It re-kindled my HUGE love for the film! Way better than watching it on a 37" HDTV upscaled to near HD-quality on a HD player.

The bad smells and poor seating etc. are external factors, and which aren’t a given in every cinema. We have some really nice VUE cinemas here with very comfy seating, generous leg room and air-conditioned atmosphere.

Films were meant to be seen on the big screen in surround sound.

i didnt say german cinemas don’t have surround sound, i was just stating that i agree with the fact that for owners of really good equipment, going to the movie theater might actually be kind of a disappointing experience. i’d have to spend almost 50 or so bucks just to commute to and from a movie theater that (occasionally) screens in digital (but is otherwise an amazing theater by the way). unless you live in a big city with a multiplexx or program cinema that has made the upgrade, most theaters i’ve been to mostly sucked, but of course not all.

i agree that the experience is more than surround sound and screen resolution, but it is a factor. if i pay 8 bucks for a ticket to a movie that was shot a few months ago, it better not look scratched and blurry, that’s just not what you paid for. despite the pop corn ,and the friends and the girl on your side…
