Tarantino Cult- or Commercial Director?

[quote=“Big Mans Wife”]
Pardon me? I hope you’re not talking to me, “Fatale”… coz if you were, that would mean YOU are the piece of shit who doesn’t have anything better to do than get exaggeratedly outraged and show how vulgar you are. I never expected anyone to justify anything…

Oh, and maybe you were talking to Ify… well, that doesn’t make you any better. Your post was disrespectful and out of place. I got some news for you: saying the word “Fuck” a lot without a reason doesn’t make you cool like Quentin, you know?

But you know what? You’re not worth my time… so I won’t say any more.

Here’s a message to the admins: I wish this was an idiot-free place

Hm… sorry, Fatale… I wanna apologize, I’ve been acting like the kind of idiots I want to keep the site free of… but I still think you shouldn’t have insulted anyone.

Ok, it’s fine, but didnt you just do the same when you thought I was offending you?

yeah, that’s exactly why I apologize…

No more arguing? That was so fun…

how about getting back on topic, eh guys? claudia already has foam in her mouth she wants to get uglly on you guys. so chill out okay … the topic is called “tarantino cult or commercial director”? so whats your opinion on that, nothing else

‘Casablanca’ has been described as a cult movie mainly because a number of people enthuse about that film and watch it over and over. As for Tarantino, well the only way to find out is by reading the interviews. He did make ‘Kill Bill’ for the fans. Yes, he does say that he makes films for himself and that everyone is invited along for the ride, but he had his eye on the Dogs/Fiction fans as opposed to the Jackie Brown fans. And before you all reply I know you can be a fan of all three films.

Commercialism, is it good or bad? Sometimes. When Quentin Tarantino appeared at a question and answer session at the National Film Theatre one young man asked him if he was in charge of the film industry would he get rid of all the really crap films? Tarantino replied in the negative saying that it is these films that kept the industry going. He then argued that Britain had a film industry when it produced the Carry Ons and the Hammers. He also defended Hollywood commercialism at the Cannes Film Festival in a debate with Tilda Swinton. Incidentally some of his favourite ‘cult’ movies were made with a commercial intent. Think of spaghetti westerns, blaxploitation, kung fu films. Correct me if I am wrong but those were made to make money.

I noticed on the rules page of the movie review forum the request for ‘no commercial shit’. Now I know reading a review saying ‘The Matrix is a cool film its so fucking cool in fact it is the king fucking cool fucking kong. Any fatherfuckers that say The Magnificent Ambersons is a better film can go fuck themselves as they are uncool niecefuckers.’ can be a little off-putting but one must not forget that, before they became directors, critics like Jean Luc Godard, Claude Chabrol and Francis Truffaut wrote about commercial Hollywood movies. Alfred Hitchcock’s output was as commercial as Don Simpson and Jerry Bruckheimer’s. They also enthused about Howard Hawks who was the Ron Howard of his day. They gave a name to pot boiler American crime dramas, Film Noir. I would like to see ‘No Commercial Shit’ removed from that list of rules.

Back to Tarantino. On a BBC Radio 4 interview he was asked about how the fans might feel if he became truly mainstream (this was broadcast the day before the British release of ‘Pulp Fiction’). The presenter used the ‘your band’ analogy. You have a favourite group that nobody knows about and you obsess about that group. Then suddenly, they have a hit and you don’t like them anymore. Tarantino said that he loved it when a favourite director of his would have a hit. He then gave the example of Jane Campion " who directed ‘Sweetie’ and ‘An Angel At My Table’. ‘The Piano’ was a big hit all over the world!"

Seems to be a mixture, although it very much has the flavor of cult. Maybe 70-30. 70 cult, 30 commercial.

with Casablanca, whats most likely the case is, that people have prejudices.

before i watched that movie, i thought its some kind of mainstream epic women-crying-movie like gone with the wind, but when i watched it, i loved it because it was some kind of '30s James Bond movie. Really cool characters, good dialoge and a good story. I think Casablanca is not a good example here.

I think what needs to happen is Tarantino splitting with Miramax. Miramax is no longer a company known for indie movies or art house classics or whatever you call em. They got greedy and that image is dotting down on Tarantino, too

I’d say Tarantino is a cult director that draws a commercial audience. Not bad for his pocketbook.

Couldn’t have said it better myself! Quentin’s movies have a rare quality, the fact that he can attract audiences that would not usually go and see a film like that, or of that genre is a talent in itself.

WE live in a commercial world! Its normally, today, for a director to be more commercial because the success of the movie depend on that. QT don’t want attention from the media more then any other director. So, its my opinion.

I don’t think the issue is whether he is a cult director or not, I think it is more of whether he is an art film director or a commercial film director. For example, Scarface is considered a cult film but its definitely not an art film, its just a cool, well-made, gangster film. I personally would say that Quentin doesnt make art films, with the exception of Pulp Fiction. I think he is just a talented film maker that makes fun and interesting films.

Quentin’s first impulse in my view is to entertain, not to make you think a lot about what he is trying to say about human nature. In a response to a criticism that he doesnt make movies about life, Quentin said he doesnt care if people think his movies arent based in life, all he wants to do is tell an interesting story. By the way, there is nothing wrong with that.
