Smokin Aces

I just saw this last night and it wuznt exactly wut I wuz expecting. I wuz expecting a dumb action movie with a thin plot and lots of body part flying around. But I wuz really happy with tha end product and wut I saw. It wuz a good film a thick plot. Jeremy Piven, Common, Ray Liotta, Ryan Reynolds, Alicia Keys all did I really good job. I really got a 70’s exploitation film feel @ sum parts. Anyone else?

I think the scene with Common and Piven was my favorite.

[SPOLIER, sort of]

AFter the Tremors kill Dupree, Pistol Pete and the other guy, can’t remember his name, was pretty funny, the ‘I forgive you’ part.

oh yea that wuz hilarious. That whole thing reminded me of a old western, like if the son accidently shoots the dad and they exchange those final words.

I’m pretty sure Morricone music was playing during that scene.

I really dont know how anyone can think this film had a thick plot. How were we supposed to care about Ryan reynolds and Ray Liotta they got like 10 minutes of screen time (and almost all of it was exposition). The dialogue was so self concious that it had absolutely no crediblity for me. It was like watching a school play version of every bad gangster cliche you’ve ever seen!

just a question does it have horror violence in it? because here in australia it got an R18+ rating for having horror violence

(SPOILERS)

Well wuts horror violence exactly over there? There’s a part where a guy sits on a chainsaw while its still in motion. You see FBI agents thrown across ths room by a 40 caliber sniper. A man had sharp sticks that come out of his sleeves and stabs ppl with them. A hooker falls back accidently on a glass table and shatters it. Security guards walk around with flames on there backs. A man is found in the river missing fingers from a gunshot(s).

What exactly is horror violence?

i would think that answered my question! thanks alot i couldnt believe it when i saw the rating because the trailer made it look quite tame

I never saw that review on Imdb so its just a coincidence and the fact that someone-else made the same observation makes me feel like i am right

u may feel right but there is no right or wrong cuz this is juss all opinion

I do think that Ryan and Ray didn’t get enough time and I’ll aslo agree with the fact that he was trying to do so much but didn’t fully get it done.

Still entertaining. 8)

I really wish their had been more Piven. I think he was my favorite character… followed by Darwin Tremor and Deigo. Since I have seen it I’ve actually come to like it more… I hope that holds up when I see it again.

A cool feature spose to be on the HDdvd (which Iwon’t have by the time it comes out sadly) is a 3d replica of the hotel, and in any scene in the movie you can stop it and see where all teh other chars are in the hotel at that time.

This was by far the worst movie I have seen in a very long time.

watching me taking a shit is more entertaining then Smokin Aces.

i liked it, when i finally saw it. i thought it tried to something different with the overdone crime genre and i succeded, the only this i didnt like was the ending, it didnt really need it for the type of movie that it was

Why does flashy editing make a movie bad? Because it’s irritating and meaningless. You rarely achieve anything with it. And when you don’t, the only explanation for it is that you’re trying hide the films weaknesses. That sums up the first 70 minutes of Smokin Aces. One hour worth of character introductions (which is funny considering they’re all extreme caricatures). That’s all there is. Some might find that a bit boring so hey, lets apply some editing techniques. Or maybe Carnahan was trying to achieve something else (the essence Vegas came to my mind a few times) but without much success. The lack of originality* in execution and poorly written dialogue doesn’t help. But it’s still not all bad. The actors are obviously enjoying themselves which is a lot of fun to watch and the characters are mostly good even if a little one dimentional. And what follows is 40 minutes of A-grade stuff, or at least almost. Good old no holds barred movie violence that I didn’t think would get past MPAA. Jeremy Piven’s acting is quite excellent and the ending is ridiculous enough to be satisfying. Good stuff.

3/5

  • not stealing from Tarantino, Ritchie or Scott… I’ve seen this kind of execution and visual style so many times that it’s ridiculous to claim it originates from a single, or a even from a handful of movies/directors.

theres no way it was tarantino style, where did people get that idea? if anything its more ritchie than anything…

The finnish theatrical poster is nice too. I couldn’t find any pics of it so I grabbed one poster from the theater (they give them away for free) and took a picture. Sorry the pic is a bit dark, it looks much better in real life.
