I think that (and this is my opinion mind you) many people who love Star Wars love it because it reminds them of their childhood when they first watched it as a kid. Many people are like “I’ve watched it 12 times in the theater when I was a kid!” or “I love the film for nostalgic reasons!”. Because let’s face it…as much as Star Wars may be a good film, it’s still a kid movie at the end of the day. And like all kid movies it’s filled with shallow characters, cheesy dialogue and cliche situations. Much like today’s kids are going to praise films like Finding Nemo or The Incredibles as they grow up. Unlike many people, I’ve seen the original Star Wars for the first time way after my childhood, and I got to say it did nothing for me. No Star Wars movie ever has.
Stanrick, I still prefer watching any DePalma movies over Lucas any day. I can tell you with a straight face I prefer Scarface over Star Wars. Or Blow Out over THX. Or Carrie over American Graffiti. I just think he’s an overall better director who (unlike Lucas) likes to expand his horizons instead of coming out with stuff like “Scarface Episode III: The Revenge of the Columbians” year after year. His movies engage me more as a viewer than what Lucas has ever done, and that’s thanks purely to his DIRECTING. American Graffiti is not enough for me in order to find a place in my heart for Lucas. I mean let’s face it, even though it’s a good film it’s no Pulp Fiction. Does that mean everybody has to be like me? Hell no.
