[news] Tarantino Film Fest 6 in Austin! (July 28)

Actually paparazzi get sued all the time. Paparazzi do most of their footage and pictures on public property which is the legal loophole they exploit. On private property they have to have a press pass/consent… or anything they shoot pictures of or video, they can’t use. Once your inside the Alamo Drafthouse you are on their property… not public… you are at an Austin Film Society event. If your taking video footage of their event on their property without their consent, not legal… especially if you turn around and post it online. There most definitely will be legal issues if anyone at all posts a video online. I’m not joking around about that at all. Let alone if anyone does this, there will be extremely heavy security next time around. As for taking pictures I went out of my way to find out what AFS and Drafthouse was comfortable where this was concerned… and they are fine with it as long as people don’t go overboard.

allright then

cool review once again

QT6 is now over. I have no clue, nor does anybody else where he suddenly vanished to tonight. Hopefully he’s safe and everyone check him out and cheer for him on the Emmy’s tonight. I just finished posting up some pics of Tarantino and Rodriguez from tonight acting out the “run for your life boy” speech in Silent Night, Deadly Night on my site. I should have my complete reports done early this week. In the meantime everyone be sure and check out Micah’s excellent coverage.

Films that played tonight on encore night were:

  • Tony Arzenta (1973) aka No Way Out

Inbetween the audience got a complete one act from “Silent Night, Deadly Night” with Tarantino playing Billy and Rodriguez playing Grandpa (or maybe this was before Fight For Your Life… its all a blur almost at this point)
  • Tarzoon (1975)
  • Fight For Your Life (1977)
  • Johnny Firecloud (1975)

The final day of QT6 coverage is posted:

There’s pictures and other goodies, but the case of the mysterious vanishing host. Thanks for coming along for the ride guys… I’ll be posting my first entries in the QT Approved Movies series next week.

Wow, that was a great final report. Well written with lots of great info and I liked the list of favorite things from the fest. That last quote from QT says it all, he just loves film and he doesnt discriminate. We should all learn from him.

QT is a really cool guy. Its great he does these fests for film lovers. You guys sure mustve had alot of fun.

Ive seen Fight For Your Life and that one is a blast. I havent seen the others yet (except for Silent Night, Deadly Night and Psycho II) and I need to track them down. Gotta see Tarzoon!

Thanks again for the reports Micah and Blake! We appreciate it!

“However, unless you are really bitten by the bug I would heartily recommend against it. There are a number of reasons - noisy projectors, storage, changing reels every 20 minutes, breakages etc but the biggest problem is the instability of the film stock. The stock degrades over time and starts smelling of vinegar unless kept in absolutely the correct conditions, and once the process starts it can’t be overturned, merely slowed down. Secondly, you mention you want to collect colour. Regrettably, the colour stock has another problem - it turns to red over a period of time, so you end up seeing red and white movies! As a consequence, b/w movies tend to trade for more than colour.”

And a friendly suggestion from the same person

By the way, just to confuse you a little - you could always think big and go for 35mm!!! Pretty much since the beginning of cinema, 35mm has been the professional format (yes I know about 70mm etc) so you could collect prints that have been projected in theatres! Of course, everything about 35mm is more expensive, and 35mm projectors are massive! However, it is probably a good time to buy one as more and more cinemas will be going digital.

Oooh! Just imagine! Did you know they used to rent out 16mm films? And in one case Martin Scorsese and George Romero would always rent the same copy of ‘The Tales of Hoffman’. If one could not get it then chances are that the other was renting it.

Thats funny… all during the festival I kept thinking: ‘I need to start collecting prints!’ I used to have about 300-400 16mm educational films, but ended up selling them all to help put myself through college.

I definitely echo what Micah said… the fest definitely makes you want to start collecting 16mm and 35mm trailers… if for nothing else, just to donate to the Drafthouse. The Big Reel is the best publication for buying film prints and trailers. I don’t see it sold in many stores, but it is an absolute essential guide. Tarantino subscribes to it and offered the tip that even if you don’t see a seller w/ the title your looking for… if they have similar genre or director listings, be sure to contact them to see if they have it. I was hoping this year Tarantino would screen a print of “Milano Calibro 9” from Di Leo… but after talking to Harry G. (one of the leading collectors of Italian film prints in the world)… turns out that nobody seems to know of anyone that has a film print of it. When Tarantino said he got his film print from Rick Baker for “Fistful of Talons”… I was pretty shocked.

Tarantino showed up at the Emmy’s last night… looking pretty tired. Two of the Emmy reports I saw… mentioned him quote unquote strangely downing coffee during the first part of the ceremony… little did they know he had been up all night at QT6 and had to haul ass out to LA from Austin.

So we should note that for the cast/crew screenings on making “Kill Bill” that “Dark Age” was screened… and in prep work w/ cinematographer Robert Richardson he screened “Fistful of Talons.” He had Bruce Willis watch alot of Aldo Ray films for his character of Butch in “Pulp Fiction.” Tarantino saw Butch as a very Aldo Ray-like character. “Four Desperate Men” was one of the films he had Bruce Willis watch.

Hard to say if there will be a QT7 in 2006, but chances of it seem pretty good… though 2007 seems more likely. Nonetheless the next film to screen w/ Tarantino there should be Austin’s regional premiere for “Grind House.” I also wouldn’t be surprised to see him at the “Wolf Creek” screening at Fantastic Fest.

I think if I’d had the money I wouldn’t just collect film prints, I would find the best ones and release them on fucking DVD so that everyone can watch them, not just a little elite group of people who have the chance to go to the film fests…

Any British fans remember when the Redemption Video label came out with titles like ‘Sadisterotica’, ‘Venus In Furs’, ‘Haxan’, ‘Virgin Among The Living Dead’, ‘Witchfinder General’, ‘Valerie And Her Week Of Wonders’, ‘Vampyros Lesbos’, ‘Female Vampire A.K.A. The Bare Breasted Countess’ and their stylish specially shot monochromatic covers? There was a sister label called Jezebel but now it looks like they’ve created more labels.

And don’t forget

"THE FILM PRAYER"

I am celluloid, not steel; O God of the machine, have mercy. I front dangers whenever I travel the whirring wheels of the mechanism. Over the sprocket wheels, held tight by the idlers. I am forced by the motor’s might. If a careless hand misthreads me, I have no alternative but to go to my death. If the pull on the take-up reel is too violent, I am torn to shreds. If dirt collects in the aperture, my film of beauty is streaked and marred, and I must face my beholders - a thing ashamed and bespoiled. I travel many miles in tin cans. I am tossed on heavy trucks, sideways and upside down. See that I don’t become bruised and wounded beyond the power to heal. I am a delicate ribbon of film - misuse me and I disappoint thousands; cherish me, and I delight and instruct the world.

Is there any chance that you would upload some clips? Or at least a sound file of the “Silent Night, Deadly Night”-play, featuring Tino and Robby?

Uhm, that message was for The DeathDealer, btw. Guess it came a little out of context.

AICN sucks in their covearge for the qt fest.

It’s been so long, and they haven’t done days 7,8,9.

Dumbdistracton did a great job.

What happened with cinemastrikesback?

They haven’t done day 6,7,8,9.

Cinema Strikes Back was right behind AICN in QT6 traffic. Neither of our sites were able to get everything all up. AICN I know has reports for every night, though I have no idea if they’ll go back now and post them up. I am wrapping everything thing up this week. It wold have been easy to just throw something up but I believe in quality over rushing something. I also want to thank everyone that checked out my QT6 coverage as I’ve received hundreds of emails thanking me on it. It was really cool to be able to write about the fest for those that didn’t attend as well as alert everyone about Seb’s badass Tarantino site here.

Also be sure and check out Austin Film Society’s just posted Video Flashback (Quicktime). Gives you a great taste of what the fest was like including the key part of the Silent Night, Deadly Night speech. Tarantino dropped the mic’s pretty damn hard… and everyone started grading his mic drops on a scale of 1-10. So when you see that part of the clip, that is what thats about.

There is a strong chance QT7 could be in February of 2006 in Austin. Just an FYI. Tarantino and Rodriguez are beginning the shoot for Grindhouse later that month there. People are trying to talk him into having it right before that.

cool video. I really hope there’s another QT fest.

Say blake, any chance I can somehow “license” all your reports for this site? kinda… you know… archive that information for coming generations

very cool vid, it MUST come to europe, it MUST

i love the mic throwing
