I love MiniDV. I’ve worked with 16mm, 35mm and 8mm. But I’ve always loved digital. Japanese directors understand how to use digital. But Western filmmakers are a little slow. Trying to make digital look like film is a complete waste in my opinion. You will always be able to tell the difference.
And why even bother? The digital aesthetic can be so beautiful. And so real. Take Inland Empire for example. Only on digital could you blow out the windows like Lynch did in that film. And to me, that looks amazing.
Not saying I don’t love film. I just have a soft spot for the digital aesthetic.
